I bought a book on the birds of the island and apparently we have band tail pigeons, which are just the prettiest: Band-tailed pigeon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'd like to attract them so I've been looking for acorns with little success. I wonder if all the eagels on the estuary would mean they would want to avoid it anyway.

Aw, cute! Could an eagle even make off with a pigeon that well? They're pretty large. I mean, sure, they could if they were particularly hard up, but I would think they'd rather go for some easier (read: smaller) prey.

Then again, all I ever get in my backyard are hawks and kestrels. I've only seen eagles from far away. I could have their size completely wrong.

The bald eagles are beefy. They aren't hard up around here and the still take things like small dogs sometimes. So yeah, it's potentially an issue.

*i yell at them when they are making a disturbance in the yard, which makes it seem like the crazy is setting in at an early age.

Oh, no, I chased off a hawk once. It was pretty scary, honestly! Those things are fierce, and their eyes communicate only bloodlust.

Just thought I'd mention that I saw my bedding in a house that had its own spread in Sunset magazine

I couldn't find any pictures, but it was like, a queen or king bed, and they had a heavyish, quilted navy blue cover on top of the whole mattress, then two pillows, flat, with space between them on the bed. They were maybe at the foot of the bed, or the bed was in the middle of a room, because there was no headboard.

Did find this, though:

Thought it was neat. From here: Victorian Style Now - Unconventional Wallpaper Ideas - Sunset

Here's something I came across and wanted to share. There's some audio down at the bottom:

You guys may be familiar with the site googlepoetics, but if not, it's great. I mention it because this recent one may be my favourite of all the ones I've seen:

I just tried to see if I could make one of those... why does everything always end up being a lyrics search? Ruins it.

So, I finally got over being a boring shitty person who doesn't listen to podcasts. I found the podcast app on my phone (iTunes hates me. I can't download it on my computer. I don't know why.), and I've been playing podcasts on my drives when NPR isn't playing something I'm interested in or I just feel like it. Now I can finally listen to my favorite show, This American Life, in its entirety! Instead of it starting five minutes before I actually get in my car, and extending a good 30 minutes past when I get out of it.

So I listened to all of Serial, and am currently subscribed to Night Vale, Grownups Read Things They Wrote As Kids (highly recommend for a laugh), Invisibilia, The Moth, and This American Life. I also just downloaded but haven't yet listened to Strangers, Call Your Girlfriend, and Where There's Smoke.

At last, Biggs. I can take your podcast recommendations. And I will actually listen to them this time.

The real mummies were the friends we made along the way. (◕ ‿ ◕)

Uhh, idk, if you mean the mummies I was talking about a little while ago, those were at the St. Louis Art Museum.

Speaking of museums! Last month the guy and I took a two-days-one-night trip to Kansas City. In addition to getting to see my cousins, my best bud, and the guy's alma mater, we spent a good four hours in the Nelson Atkins museum! And... there were mummies. They had an entire sarcophagus (the former occupant of which was missing, however) disassembled across a few displays so you could see all of it. They also had a sarcophagus-less mummy whose identity was unknown, just... lying out (well, under glass). The ones at the SLAM were all still (mostly) in their sarcophagi so this was a pretty new experience for me. Just... there's a dead body right there. A hella old dead body. Used to be alive. Just like me. Now it's all gaunt and wrapped up and lying under glass thousands of miles from home.

In better news, they had some truly astounding exhibits. Regional loyalty prevents me from declaring the Nelson-Atkins as superior to the SLAM, but, well, like... they had some better stuff. Including architecture! They had reassembled a lot of very old architecture in the building, and not just old sitting rooms (but there were a lot of those, too. I always love the French ones). There was the cloister of a medieval Augustinian monastery, bits of a few Buddhist temples stuck together to form a room (including a huge mural as the backdrop to an equally huge Buddha), and a very painstakingly cleaned up Janus (?) shrine.

Most of the pictures I took haven't made their way online yet (but I'll glad share shots of anything I've mentioned for the curious), but I did post a couple themed collages to my instagram.

I do enjoy going to museums. I've been to a bunch of the ones in Washington DC and the MoMA in NYC.

The mummies were in victorian novels and philosophical essays.

Aw yiss, Museum talk. I applied with TAM. Haven't heard anything back yet.
Okay but! Interesting news. Parliament is going to discuss sending back the Elgin marbles to Greece. They've been in the UK for eons now, but Greece has been wanting them back for a while. It's gonna be hella contentious. But at least it's not flat out depressing news like that coming out of Iraq.

Oh wow! That does seem only right, though. They're a huge part of Greek history, they belong in Greece. Art like paintings can belong to people and can go wherever, but architecture belongs to a city.

I was thinking of the arguments you might hear against it, and I came up with two: a) that London sees more visitors, and therefore it would reach more people this way, and b) the fact that Greece is in shambles right now. The economy tanked a few years ago, and Greece had to go to the European Union for a bailout (repeatedly? I can't exactly remember) the EU finally okayed it, but insisted Greece institute austerity measures. Greece agreed but about 1 and a half years later you started to here a lot of grumbling about it being "too hard" Now Greece is trying to get out of it. Which is ridic in my opinion because the country hasn't shown any improved capabilities. The political landscape has gotten pretty scary as well. You see the rise of groups like Golden Dawn, which is pretty fascist and racist. Not that that will be an argument against sending them, but it's part of the larger Greece picture atm.

Yeah, I considered that, but didn't see it as an actual threat to the work. Plus, the country being in poor shape is all the more reason for them to want to bring it back home. Overall better art to show would make them look better, maybe increase tourism...
