an NPC might already live there! Be careful, and try to give them something, they'll give you something back. That's what the Wiki says, anyway...

I'm actually writing a novel on Minecraft, and you can find it in the Fanfic section of the forums :D
I love minecraft, but I mostly play online now instead on just in singleplayer. When I do play singleplayer though, I use the mod YogBox which you can find more info on here: YogBox - A carefully-chosen compilation of good mods
Its awesome, adding lots and lots of sweet mods and even NPC Villages in singleplayer :D
I suggest downloading it, but thats just me :)
I'm glad more people are getting into Minecraft though, as I bought it when it first came into Alpha :) If you want to join me in multiplayer though, I play on a server by AG:MC and you have to be whitelisted by applying on their forums at AGMC
After you get whitelisted though, the server is mc.agmc.in
Enjoy!

Really? I saw no NPCs as of yet... but I may adventure out farther and try to find an NPC once I get settled.
Ooh ooh... but... pigs drown themselves now  I found bacon under the water randomly while making my boat on a creative server. I found this epic cove I'm turning into a pirate hideout :squee:
@ Flare - good to know  but what kind of mods do thy use there? :O that part is important
I'm tempted to apply... cause my old server stopped working like 2 months ago :(

Does anyone know a good Seed that starts you off on an island far from land?

hawaii seed looks nice... but there aren't many resources other than wood on it. Would likely have to make a mine.
=) looks nice and flat though
Ooh... found a mini cave with coal =)
Grr.... and last spot I check it has a small connection to a continent :(

Why do you want to start on an island, Cat?
On a random note, has anyone spawned on anything other than sand, or snow-covered sand?

Islands are a lot more simple... though I find building on top of a huge mountain is pretty simple too. Just make the mine spiral down to bedrock and light the top to avoid mobs XD

The first new world I created in the 1.8 pre-release spawned me atop a hill, on grass, surrounded by trees.

Well, that sounds more interesting than on sand near water. I've always spawned on that for some reason...

I had issues after exploring a while also, fps shot way down and movement was chuggy, then blocks stopped displaying. Annnd then java crashed. ;D I noticed that a memory leak was among the things Jeb is fixing for tomorrow (or tonight? time zone confusion).

Poet, the huge crack is a ravine, it's a new natural feature. And the rails are an abandoned mineshaft, also new. It's the only place your going to find the cave spiders. There should be lots of ore there, if you get rid of the spider spawner. I've been looking up the new additions on the wiki.

An updated version of the pre-release 1.8 .jar file is posted on the official forums today. Runs a lot smoother for me, so far. <3

Lags a bit more for me if I travel too far but smoother yeah if you stay put.
As for the shafts... they're too common... I went on creative... dug down... and I could not find a single cave WITHOUT a mine shaft... =/ that irks me a bit
cave spiders are SCARY... they can get through a 1 by 1 spot... @ [email protected]

I'm really not crazy about the chasms. There are far too many of them. I feel like I'm going to fall down in one every five seconds. I didn't like giant holes in the ground to begin with. :gonk:
The cave spiders are terrifying. The first chasm/abandoned mineshaft I went into had a double spider spawning dungeon!

haha... I agree... but then I have a faster reaction time than most so I don't die...
A way of telling it's a chasm would be nice for those who don't react fast enough... like a border 1-2 stone wide around it
Cave spiders would be less scary if they followed the 2 width the other spiders do. That or make them smaller.
I'm really liking the depth of the caves though... because before most caves were like 3-5 high... I've been finding more expansive rooms
