Haha. It's nice to see somebody happy to go back to school. :) You're returning from your internship? Or a break?

Yeah. A beret is a lot of increasing and decreasing. I can't wait to try one though. I've been wanting a beret forever, but I never have the money to buy one when I see one.

Sorry I disappeared. I just noticed that that dev guy has been creeping on three of my mene friends. *le sigh* *shakes head* It's only a matter of time before that one gets banned.

But enough of him.

@Sarof: I mean, I don't celebrate Christmas so it's all really a moot point - but yeah what I was referring to was kind of a friendship gift exchange, it really doesn't relate in anyway to the Christian holiday.

That's kinda sad. We have the best holidays. lol. :) Especially when they're celebrated properly. ...no one ever guesses I'm Christian, I wonder if that's a bad thing...

At least you -say- you're Christian, Saro. I know so many Christians who will say they're athiests or agnostic because they're afraid of the judgement.

I don't care what others think of me, if they don't bother getting to know me, then they're just ignorant, and I don't want to play with them anyways. In the words of Dr. Seuss
Quote:
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.”
I enjoy Dr. Seuss. :)

Really? I think there is a lot more judgment on a person who affiliates and non-religious than on someone who identifies as Christian or some other organized religion. I've never seen someone who has faith claim that they don't because of public appearances. Maybe that's just my experience though, I'm interested?

Even though I am an agnostic (I was raised as one and have been one all my life it's not a recent 'college' thing, I find all those dipshit post-college orientation atheists annoying too) ANYWAY - I rarely mention it even if asked, in RL obviously, because it has a big stigma attached to it. It's generally easier to just ... keep to yourself.

I don't know what it is about certain places in Colorado...it's like...one town will be full-on Christian, and the next will be wholely agnostic...and then there's Boulder...where if you're not Hindu, or Buddhist, you're lame. I know a lot of people who will claim to be anything but Christian because it's just not cool. And there's something about my college that has caused a lot of kids to give into that "post-college orientation atheist" thing, as you so put it.

The thing about the people I've met is, when you ask them their religion and they claim Hinduism, Buddhism, Atheism, Agnosticism...you can tell they're hiding that they don't really believe it. I'm not sure why so many people think they have to hide what they are.

----------

There are a lot people around here who will look at you like you're crazier for being Christian than being an atheist. *shrugs* It's just the times, man.

I don't really think it's fair to say what people believe or don't in a general sense, but I do agree that more "alternative," at least relative to America, types of faith have become "cool" recently. I don't think the system of beliefs that you form your life around should be adopted as a fad. I find it shallow and indicative of a meaningless existence.

Also I resent that everyone assumes I'm a vapid hipster because of the stereotype of what an agnostic or atheist is now-a-days.

I have to say that I don't think it's easier to be an agnostic/atheist rather than Christian - a strong prejudice exists against those groups. I've experienced it myself. I do think that it's way "cooler" to be ag/ath which is the crazy part.

I personally believe that there will be a return to organized religion one day in the next several years. All of the kids in college now who are trying to claim they are part of the...how to put it? More laid back religions, or indeed say they have no religions will realize that being cool is less important than the beliefs they truly have. It's like the classic clique issue in high school. They'll get over it.

My family is Christian, but we've never been church goers, and I am still honestly choosing what I'm willing to believe. I know I will never be atheist, but there are definitely days I lean towards agnosticism. I have issues convincing myself that the Bible, and any other religious text wasn't just something contrived by a man who was bored out of his wits. And there are things in the Bible that...I have issues with.

Admittedly, the things that I tend to have the most problems with are things that most people have rejected and don't study. But how can you claim that you're a Christian when you pick and choose things to believe?

I mean - I hope there isn't a return to organized religion. I hope people start defining their faiths in their own way, outside of existing frameworks. I think it makes the spiritual experience more genuine.

mmm. I agree. I mean, I'm an agnostic and have been my entire life, so I couldn't really see it another way.

Black: Well the whole point of agnosticism is basically wanting proof one way or the other right? I was agnostic for a few years, and then God was proven to me, so Now I'm very Christian.

Ely: OMG!! You live in Colorado too! :D And yeah, it is like that here. Kinda weird dichotomy we have going both religiously and politically.

Sarof: Nope, that's not the point of agnosticism. For me the point is that any God, anywhere is unknown and unknowable. It's not that I'm uncertain or seeking proof, it is that I believe there is none, so I'd rather not concern myself with the whole thing and just try to be a good person.

@Saro: Haha. Indeedie. :) I've been plaguing Colorado since the day I was born and I'll always come back no matter how far I go.

And, yeah. I've always looked at agnosticism as believing that there is a god, or a more...universal force/higher being, but not necessarily putting a name to it or claiming that you know what it is. So basically...it's believing that there is something "spiritual" but not claiming a particular religion. My point of view on it, anyway.

I've always lived my life with the attitude: "be kind, be loving, be the best you that you have the ability to be, and never lose the ability to honestly look yourself in the eye." I have a better attitude towards life than a lot of the highly religious people I know. It's all about being able to love who you are and accept others fully for what they are.

@Ely - I'm going back from my internship. It's like, the first semester of your sophomore year is an internship, then you go back for about 7 more months of schooling, then graduate with your associates. My lifestyle here is just killing me (I do nothing but work and it's no good) and I can't wait to back on campus where there's ALWAYS something to do.

I'm thinking I'm going to be staying out of the religion conversation...that very rarely ends well.

D'awh!!!! Elizabeth Taylor died!

I think that religion is one of those things people feeling too strongly about for conversation to be of any use (unless you hold the same beliefs, and then conversation can be fulfilling as with any other topic).

I saw that on my Google home page. I'm not going to lie; a lot of the time when I see stories about celebrities dying it just makes me resentful that people care so much, because people die every second, and no one cares about them much at all. What difference does it make if they were really pretty or a great singer? The exception of course is when the celebrity also happened to be a philanthropist or something of that nature.

I know, right? I just thought Elizabeth Taylor was gorgeous. *shrugs* I know, had I been around at the time of Audrey Hepburn's death, I probably would have been seriously upset. She's one of my heroes. But yeah...most of the time it's like, for example, when Heath Ledger died...do you know how many people have died today from the exact same thing?! Was all I could think. And THEY'RE not getting any attention.

Also, politics and religions...opinions I tend to keep to myself.

I think I believe in Elysium's view of agnosticism, mostly. I believe there probably is something, but it may not be like any of what the religions say. Although if I was shown definite proof that a higher power was definitely like one of the established religions I'd believe it.

Elizabeth Taylor did stuff for AIDS charities I believe. I tend to feel sad that they died, but often it's not any more upset than I would feel for any other stranger, unless I had seen a LOT of their work and I really appreciated them.

I just think it speaks to the American sentiment that celebrities aren't strangers, which is kind of frightening, in my opinion. Like, you can know all of these things about them, and feel like you know them because they're so public a figure, but that kind of information about them simply leads you to wrongly assume that you have a relationship with them. That kind of thinking just leads to danger for celebrities.

In my opinion, Christianity is not meant to be a Religion as people see them. It's a way of life. Christians are meant to love everyone, and never judge anyone. Sadly enough too many people who call themselves Christian only seem to do so in order to make themselves feel superior to others. Which is the opposite of how they're supposed to think. It really hurts whenever I'm told by someone that all Christians are judgmental and mean, or that we think we are better than everyone. I also really don't like it when people say that only their view of God could possibly be true. I've been told by so many people that I'm going to hell, or that I don't know God because I don't see things exactly their way.

Hence my love for this poem.

In my opinion, everyone is meant to love everyone and never judge anyone. I think it's kind of disheartening that we need religions to justify that kind of acceptance, or give us a reason to do so, or tell us that it's right.

Edit: That is a very appropriate poem. :)

I swear my mum would marry Heath Ledger if she could. >.> That's one of the few things that we bicker about constantly. She's ALWAYS on the computer researching people she doesn't know and really shouldn't give a crap about. But when I...a real person...come to her with a problem, wanting advice, attention, and love, she ignores me for her fake world 80% of the time. And only pays attention to me when it's in to her advantage to do so. I have a reason I dislike most celebrities, can't remember their names, and don't know anything about them.

One of my issues with some religions is that people think they can go out and friggin' MURDER someone, and all they have to do is repent to be back on God's good side. Um...excuse me?

sea: I do not love, because I'm told to. I do it because it is right. I'm Christian because the Christian God also says so. I'm Christian because I agree with the belief system. As I said before, I was once Agnostic. I picked Christianity, because I studied the Bible, and agree with it. Other religions... not so much.

I believe in the ideas that Christianity has, that we should treat one another as we believe others should be treated, I just don't agree with the "religion" part of it. But a lot of people I think ignore the core of religions, and do the superficial things, like going to church.
