The U.S. has NPR and PBS. If you combine the two you get a semi-decent competitor for BBC. Both of which are voluntarily supported by donations. I wouldn't mind paying a little bit of a fee to get a nice network like BBC, though.

BBC is not completely publicly funded. They have commercials. And you can get the BBC on cable. lol. Does that count?

On our cable? I've seen a network here in the U.S. that shows BBC news hour but none of the other stuff that they show, which is what I want. It's on our German channel. :XD The show itself is broadcast in English, though.

Kita just has basic cable, so she doesn't get the BBC.

I don't get much above basic cable, but it isn't quite basic. Not like we get any good channels besides the ones on regular cable.

Um, the BBC has no advertising at all....

I'm talking about the British Broadcasting Company in Britain. BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4.
Not its American spin-off >.>

There's product placement in a lot of their shows. I've seen it. And I count the annoying begging for money as commercials.

I agree. Sometimes the money begging can be more annoying than showing us a friggin' toilet paper commercial every now and then. I know that PBS spends half its day begging for money with "buy this book to support us" crap inbetween parts of their shows.

Also they interrupt stuff I really like to bother me. They should just do the quick little adds after shows you get on religious channels and publicly funded radio stations. It's more streamlined I think. More elegant.

Yeah, and put a plug in every once in awhile with "you can donate to us at ....." or something. I remember watching a Celtic Women concert on PBS a few years ago and getting really pissed at it because the show was only an hour long but it took three hours to get through because they advertised "buy the C.D. and ---- amount of money will be donated to us" soooooo many times.

Yeah. I love Celtic Woman, and Celtic Thunder, but I watch them on youtube because PBS begs for money after each song, and they offer like nine packages of crap you can buy, and they have to explain every last item and why it's such a great deal. XD

Holy Mary mother of God. Yes. I hateeeeeee that. >.....>

I like Celtic Women quite a bit, but I haven't heard enough of Celtic Thunder to know whether or not I like them. I do have one of their CDs that I've just never gotten the chance to listen to because I ripped it from the library and never clicked play. So that'll have to go on my list. I need to spend some time alone with my music library and get to know it a little. ;) I have so much stuff that I don't know what it is because I just got it from the library and didn't look at it twice.

lol. I had a friend who used to do that a lot. He had so many songs on his computer that it took up over half the memory.

*cough* Well. You've met another person who does that. Hehe.

It's a really great way to get a lot of music..but sometimes you don't know what you've got, lol. I don't pay for music unless I respect the artist, and even then...if they're friggin' over the top rich, I won't support them. I'll give my money to a lesser known band who's gained my respect.

Indeed.

I have a lot of music from that. I prefer not to have to pay people who already have millions of dollars for a cd with three songs I actually like.

This is America, right?

The BBC has never ever done this in their broadcasts.

Perhaps its different in America?

Like I said, all I have is basic cable, so I can't weigh in on this discussion.

Ahhh. I just got to go out shopping for my birthday next week. Got a bunch of beautiful summer clothing. :D I haven't been shopping in a LONG time.

Well...I'd imagine that the shows they show on the English BBC are the same as the American BBC...because we just get reruns of shows that were originally shown in Britain...so if there are product placements within the actual shows I'm sure they weren't somehow added for the American version.

I haven't even been shopping at a thrift store for ages, let alone any "real store" @[email protected]
No mon, no fun haha.
I love thrift stores though.

I love to shop. Even if I don't buy anything I get a kick out of trying on all the clothing and stuff. Yeah. I'm a girly girl. I know. I'm proud of myself. :D

I only like some thrift stores. We've got a couple of specialty/high end thrift stores where I live that I like. And by that I mean they only accept the highest quality of gently used clothing or they only sell certain types of clothing (Junior, etc.). I don't like places like Arc and Goodwill...most of the stuff in there isn't my style and I'm not fond of the atmosphere.

I got a Guess dress from one of the thrift stores I mentioned above for $15 a couple of months ago and I know for a fact that thing was at least $85 to start out with. Mega win.

No, I love shopping too. But I love to shop anywhere, including thrift stores. We have three here: Goodwill, DAV Store, and Salvation Army. I shop at Goodwill mostly, because their clothes are only slightly worn or not at all, and there's nothing icky there. The DAV store is much of the same, but the clothes may be a bit more worn, however, a percentage of their profits go to help disabled American veterans- my dad is one of those, so I buy things there. Mostly just shirts though. Salvation Army, you won't see me in there. There is some yucky clothes there. Its cheap, so that the really poor people can afford to buy clothes, but honestly it makes me sad that that's what unfortunately poor people have to wear. When I donate my old clothes though, they go to the Salvation Army. I'm poor myself, but my clothes are better than a lot of the clothes there. :(

The high end thrift stores are too expensive and/or they don't sell clothing in my size.

I don't go to thrift stores often mainly because I feel like I can buy new clothes for cheaper than I could get slightly worn stuff. Hell. You get a coupon and you hit one of those mega end-of-season sales where everything is 75% off and you'd be an idiot to spend your money on used stuff instead. I'm a bargain shopper instead of a second-hand person for the most part.

I've gotten new $80 shoes for five bucks and $20 cardigans for $1. Just takes some patience.

I don't like spending a lot of money. My eyes go wide when I see something costs over $20. Especially if it's just a t-shirt.

I tend to shop wherever is cheap. I really don't care, and as far as I'm concerned name brand = bull crap.

Brand name mostly doesn't matter with me. All I give a crap about is if it's going to hold up. I know what designer brands I like, but I only do because I like to copy it in cheaper stuff when I see that they come out with something prettyfull.
