Morning Thoth!
@ Cart & Reine: It was the same thing in high school. It seems that you're not a true woman unless you either have a boyfriend of if you're looking for one. I thought that was what the period was for!

By the standards of most people in Indiana... I'm not a woman. =DD
Mostly because I'm the one in the relationship that generally 'brings home the bacon' and I'm a little too honest to be a girl. Something dumb like that. xD

@Taiyo: There's no such thing as a woman that's not a real woman. If that girl questions you on that, she probably has some skeletons in her closet that she's trying to conceal. 0_0

Wow, you must be really smart Reine, because library science is hard and takes a long time to get a degree in. Good luck and I hope your health improves. ^^ Are you fluent in French?
Hey Tsuki... I think women should be independent and shouldn't feel pressured to get a bf or date.
In fact, I think women should wait to marry... And become more empowered through education. How else will we get a female president??
Its all about Anatomy, Hyena... no matter whose "bringing home the bacon" so to speak, if you don't have a penis, you're still not a male... though, I understand some women are tom boys or think like men... like there's some men that think like women.
Holy cow, that's crazy black cart! XD I'm soo stupid at languages... and you already know 3! I hear Latin is really hard...
I'm studying German but I'm definitely no where near being fluent.

Thoth: Its more that, when the guys at work are walking about what they hate about women, and I'm in the room, someone points out that I might get offended; someone else says "she doesn't count."
Also this:
Shawnté: Who stacked this? Its effin' heavy!
Me: I did. I didn't have any trouble moving it.
Shawnté: I can't move this! I'm a girl.
Me: Oh, I'm sorry, lady. Allow me to move it with the power of my giant pulsating man-part!
On the fortunate side, it allows me to deliver some WONDERFUL one-liners... which I will eventually write into my webcomic... >>

I don't even think it's anatomy that makes a woman, a man, or any other gender. I think it's what's in their spirit and what characteristics they have (masculine vs. feminine).
And I thought I'd be President based on my cuteness...I guess I was wrong?
Yeah I'm pretty smart lol but library science is actually a pretty easy degree. It's a lot of organization though and I'mm terrible at keeping stuff in order (God you should see my room). I want to work in a public or school library improving literacy for people with disabilities. Many librarians get masters degrees (the MLS) but I'm not fit to get one right now. I'm probably going to need spinal and brain surgery to correct EDS related problems and the results really vary from person to person.
And yeah...I'm STILL watching Harry Potter :D

You don't need boobs to be a woman. Or a period. My friend's stepmom lost her boobs to cancer (lost one to cancer, the other for symmetry) and then as a reaction to chemo had an early menopause. And she's more woman than anyone I've ever met. xD
People seem to be under the impression that physiological sex is a binary state. But there are people who are neither or both (rare, but it happens), and its REALLY INTERESTING. o_o

Well, you have to admit that in terms of reproduction our sexual state is static. I agree with Hyena, however, that the mental state of gender is far more dynamic, the result of environmental and genetic forces. The results of which are as unique as a finger print. No one's perception of their gender and resultant gender roles are the same as their follows.

Oh my gods... like... when I'm at home, I'm all ribbons in my hair and girly-girl to ridiculous amounts. But when I get to work, the environment makes me get all mannish. Like... there's something about Malwart that puts me into man-mode. xD
Part of it is survival, though. ITs a job where I have to lift half my weight on a regular basis. If I didn't man-up a bit, I wouldn't still be working there.
... not that I look forward to going there every day. I kind of need the money, though, if I'm going to afford the engagement ring I wanna give Lizzy... <3

Well, do you get offended when they are insulting women, hyena? I would, in fact gender has nothing to do with whether you are offending or not... Not to mention, I don't care about the opinions of a few dumb men, compared to the sound arguments of doctors and scientists.
I do agree that menstrual cycle and boobs does not make a woman... For one, men can have boobs and can even have milk come out of them! secondly, many women don't go through menstruation because of birth control pills, surgery and menopause... A woman is only as feminine as her personality is. And yes, there is people that are both genders! and that is a typical genetic default... and sadly, those people have to undergo hormone treatments and must choose a gender! How hard would that be for a genderless person to decide? what would u choose? I couldn't decide!
Maybe, from a poets or philosophers point of view, Reine... I am very analytical and technical though, so I consider it to be genetic and therefore, the x and y chromosomes make a HUGE difference. Also, how men and women use their brains are completely different and this is based on hormones and chemistry. Chemistry does not lie. Women and men are physically and psychologically different... Even if a woman has a masculine "spirit," that doesn't mean she is a man, that only means that she is brave and dominant and has traits of a man... Many women are strong and brave like men. And many men are beautiful and motherly, like a woman. It all depends. The only way for a woman to become a man, is to get surgery and hormone treatments.... So even if she considers herself transgender, she is still not a man until she follows the physical and chemical procedures of becoming a man...
And no, I would not vote for a person based only on their cuteness. XD lol//
Ugh, I'm not a big fan of organization... so I don't think I'd ever get that degree. Unfortunately, many librarians had to take early retirement or get laid off because of the budget cuts, so a library isn't exactly a good career choice right now....
I'm not a big fan of Harry potter...
I agree that its dynamic, black cart...

Haha, I read it a few days ago and thought it was relevant to the general conversation.
I also thought that it displayed my views of Thoth's argument better than I could. In case any of you didn't read the article, however, it basically states that the characteristics that are commonly attributed to male/female roles, such as brave, or dominant as Thoth cited are actually shared characteristics of all people. Limiting them to one gender is a function of narrowing what a person may become.

I refer to masculine v feminine traits because its easier for people to understand the shift in personality. The REAL reason is because I tend to evoke the personalities of my characters for certain situations. When I'm at work, I need to be stronger and more serious: traits that belong to Leonard, who just happens to be male. o_o
And if I told people that I had all these people in my head affecting the way I act, that's a good way to land yourself in a padded room.

See I've been told that sex and gender are different. Nowadays not as many intersex people (people born with male and female genes and anatomy) are forced to have one sex over the other.
Actually librarians are still needed...it's just not the stereotypical woman who hides her head in a book. Librarians manage the organization of Google's search results, of the databases we use for research and of many different kinds of computer networks. I work with a lot of digital things especially the Internet. In fact, I hardly ever touch a book (not really in my interest area either).
Good Lord I'm girly as can be except I don't really do my hair or anything and I don't usually wear makeup. But I do love pink and women's clothing and DRESSES!

Sex and gender ARE different. That's what the article was trying to say, I think. But it was also trying to make the point that what we think of as manly traits in public (strong and responsible) are different from what men think are manly traits in private (promiscuity, short temper). So, more or less questioning what a gender trait is and why people think of them as such.
I have a friend who refers to himself as "bi-gender," relating to gender traits of both male and female. And while I understand what he means by it, I don't think I understand what he thinks are male v female traits. As far as I can tell, his idea of masculine traits are "conceited, bossy, responsible," and his female traits are "insecure, bitchy." And if you ask me... those are generally traits of... being... I dunno... carbon-based.

Then I guess that makes me gender-confused, if both genders have a set of traits. I'm a girl, yet I'm a sarcastic, grumpy, strong, stubborn, bitchy, competitive, and short-tempered. Simply put, I "act" more like a man than a woman. Like I care. :P

I disagree Reine... if you are genderless (IE gender) than you MUST have hormone treatments... if given testosterone you will become male, if given estrogen they would become female. It all depends on chemistry... Also, its IMPOSSIBLE for a person to remain IE after going through puberty, because the hormones are so unbalanced that it causes damage to the vital organs and can in fact, kill someone with IE.
Exactly, black cart. ^^
True, Hyena, both males and females can be bitchy. XD haha.
You sound very much like a woman to me, Tsuki. Most women are stubborn.

@ Thoth: It's just the way that I talk. Most girls act like saying the crap I do is unforgivable if you're a girl, but perfectly fine if you're a dude. Such as actually calling a guy's family jewels the penis and balls. Or calling the period by it's actual name.
