Well... my mother is kind of dense. I knew my dad knew because he kept hinting at me that I should move to places that were specifically gay-friendly and telling me things about his gay friends kind of as a way of saying "Its okay. You can [i]tell[i] me." My mom is usually a little harder to convince because she has a heavy background in the church and there's a lot of influence there. But since she started moving out of that social group, she's started sounding a little more open to new ideas.
But anyhow, me and my brother were never really all that close and he's going through an awkward phase of his life. He's stopped seeing me as a fleshy target for ridicule and started seeing me as competition as "the favorite." Because when you compare our lives, I kind of come out ahead: graduated in the top quarter in high school, went into a field of study that I knew wouldn't make me money, constantly busying myself with projects, shitty job but a money-making hobby on the side, a significant other, becoming stable after a run-in with my anxiety issues, a group of friends, no serious addictions. And then he's like this: barely scraped by in high school, went into a field that he thought would make him money and didn't, spends all his time playing video games, unable to keep a job because new teacher are always the first to be fired, can't keep a girlfriend, breakdown after breakdown, hasn't talked to any of his high school or college friends since they graduated, both alcoholic and caffiene addiction... I'm starting to look like the Golden Child.
And, not to be a downer, but my life kind of sucks. If he thinks I'm so charmed, then I'm wondering if he's really looking at the whole picture. But anyhow, a lot of his issues with me right now are me being the golden child, and then our parents accepting my sexuality as a given rather than "thou shalt not" was probably the straw that broke the camel's back. So it has less to do with me being gay and about a TON more to do with me being kind of an over-achiever... while at the same time being this horrible thing that society considers an abomination (backwater Indiana town, coming out at work and not immediately being lynched was somewhat of a miracle.)
But he'll eventually come around. Really, he just needs some confidence in himself, and a support group of his own.

I hate it when people twist the bible to allow themselves to hate people. It's the opposite of what it's supposed to be. I'm sorry you have to worry about that. Trust me when I say the God I know could never hate you for the way he(for lack of a better pronoun) made you.
...religion aside. :) I'm happy your family reacted well, and your brother will probably come around soon. I'm sorry your life isn't being so great at the moment. What's wrong?

Unfortunately, people will be people and that is what people will do. -shrug- I've learned to live with people like that.
There are a few things in my life that are making it hard to enjoy. For one, I'm an openly gay person in a backwater town that doesn't recognize a lot of people's rights. (A girl at the local high school was raped on their campus, and it took them three hours to get the rape kit because they didn't believe her.) I'm kind of afraid of being lynched sometimes because, while the people I'm in constant contact with are okay with my sexuality, there is no gay community outside of what's on the college campus and I graduated a year ago. I would stick around campus, but I would rather look forward than dwell on the past... and most of my friends have moved on.
Secondly, I am a rather intelligent woman. I have a wellspring of creative energy and the gusto to DO all the projects I get started on. And that's a GREAT thing. But I work at Walmart. There aren't any art jobs out there for someone who is just out of college, and certainly not in Indiana. I'm a big fish in a small pond, and its soul-killing. People at work (no matter WHERE I work, honestly,) are always saying "man, you're talented! What are you doing working HERE?" And my response is always "earning just enough money to get by, but not enough to get out." And they seem perplexed by that answer, which I think is a pretty plain and simple way of stating it. Its come to the point where people have been listening to the jerk at work who claims that I don't actually draw the things in my sketchbook and that I'm doing it for attention. Soul-killing.
Three: I live with severe potheads. I mean, I don't mind that they smoke. That's their business. But we just recently acquired two new roommates in our tiny apartment because they got evicted and needed a place to stay. I was okay with it at first, but it seems like all of their income has been going towards buying more pot and more booze. I haven't seen any efforts to find a place to live or a legitimate job.
So maybe my life isn't horrible, but I'm not living the charmed life that my brother thinks I am. He even refused to see my apartment building because he was afraid that it would be better than his first apartment.

You could run away to Colorado. :) We have loads of artists, and it's mostly gay friendly. I kinda like it, but the state government is going all nuts on me.

Well, coming out of the closet was my gift to my mom. xDD
That, and a book on Christian Buddhism. I got my brother a copy of The Bro Code, and my dad got a CD by the group "Brave Combo." He's gotten really into polka in the past few months.
Dad got me a bike helmet and a bike lock, as a promise for a new bike next holiday. He also burned all of our old family videos to DVD because...well... he's a dad. xD
Oh, and a REALLY warm hoodie to replace the one that he got me three years ago and is full of holes.
Mom got me standard: hat and gloves. She also got me some bracelets made by women in Uganda. (Which I think is AWESOME, because I'm all over that philanthropist stuff. xD)
My brother got me a Brita water pitcher and replacement filters.
It was a good haul. =]

Indeed. I didn't get a ton, but what I got was awesome. My girlfriend spent entirely too much on me. She bought me a bamboo tablet for my computer, as well as an electric griddle, and a game for the wii. And other than that, my mom bought me an awesome set of six pairs of chopsticks, and the little things you rest them on. And I got a bunch of gift cards. :) I enjoyed it a great deal. :)

It's pretty simple technology. Not much there to break really. Might screw up the placement of a few chips if you did it enough, but other than that, there's not much. :) I love the thing, even though I kinda suck with it. lol. I'm getting a bit better now though. :) After practicing with it for almost two weeks. :)

I've found that I'm much better with it in Photoshop now that I've turned on the shape dynamics in the brush menu, but that's also partly my personal art style.

I think it comes with Painter... >>
I might be preaching to the choir here, but Shape Dynamics is what gives your lines a strokelike appearance: being thin where there is little pressure on the tablet and thick where the most pressure is applied. It makes it look more painterly in my opinion. I would totally suggest seeing if you can use a setting like that in the program you have. I think it gives things a more emotive feel <3

I have a tablet I haven't used in ages.. I prefer just doing photos in Photoshop (or the darkroom) and painting with actual paint on paper. Feels a lot better. Maybe I should try doing computer stuff again though, I think the main reason why I stopped doing it was because Photoshop always works horribly slowly for me, so I lost patience with it.
By the way Hyena, I took a look at your comic, it's really good so far! Can't wait to finish reading it, after which it'll be added to the long list of webcomics I check regularly. :)

Hyena: Painter does the same thing. Seriously. It also literally mimics the appearance of pencil when I use it. It's awesome.
ljoss: I know a lot of people who prefer the traditional way. I do for painting. I like to feel the paint on the brush, as I make my strokes.
I'm glad to see there are other artists on here, who like both ways of doing things. A lot of the people on here only like electronic, and don't do the normal, paintbrush and or pencil approach to art, and I think they're missing out. :)

To be fair I only recently started painting again, when I realised how much fun it is doing watercolours and ink (though I just use pens, not proper ink.. they're pretty nice pens though, so I don't mind).

I use acrylic. You can watercolor with it, or just paint. It dries quickly so you don't have to take six months to paint one meadow. lol. It's an awesome hobby and it relieves so much stress it's not even funny. :) I learned a little while back, and now I'm waiting till I get the chance to do some real classes in College. It requires another class, so I can't do it yet.

I just use Sharpies for my comicbooks. They're inexpensive, and if you have a large selection of colors you can blend them REALLY well. But when it comes to my big stuff, I usually use watercolor. I like how much you can texture with it and... STUFF! =DD
I really like using wet-in-wet. Very zen. o_o
ljosberinn: I saw your comment on the site. I promise it gets more interesting. And COLORFUL! =DD

Sad day. ._.
I've decided that I'm going to hop on the bandwagon and do a few paintings of the Disney Princesses. People BUY those. xD
I mean, not to be a sell-out. Most of my time is spent working on The Bend, so trying to do too much creative stuff at a time I think would fry my brain. xD

Hyena, I read a little more today, and there's a bit of colour now, very nice. :D
I also love the texture of watercolours, and how unpredictable they are.. they sort of create the art themselves, if you know what I mean. It is very relaxing.
Sarofset, that is sad indeed. I've got way too many canvases actually, as I said before I haven't painted for a while and I'd rather use watercolours in my sketchbook than on a canvas..
