HOW CAN YOU NOT HAVE ANIME IN YOUR HOUSE!?!

Sorry, I've been around anime for so long that I can't imagine my live without it. Same thing with sci-fi and fantasy.

We're not Japanese and we don't live in Japan? :'D

Also, anime is quite lame.

The animation is bad and the writing is worse.

Compared to American or worse European cartoons, which are all written for four year-olds? No. Anime has some of the best animation techniques, and has the best writing of any kind of animation. There's actual plot lines, with nuance and twists. Have you only ever watched like DBZ and the stuff from the 80's? because that's the only possible way you could think that. Just saying.

I'm not very interested in the animation, I just thought I'd mention that I didn't like it.

I like anything that's written well, and I'm not comparing anime with writing in other cartoons.
I'm comparing it with TV writing in general.

I doubt anime could ever match the standards set by my favourite programs.

Have you actually watched any of the good anime out there? like not the crap that was on toonami? The Gundam series alone matches almost any writing in American programs. And I'd know. I'm a tv/movie addict. lol.

Got that right. So does Fullmetal Alchemist and Evangelion. If you ask me, Gundam, FMA, Evangelion, Ah! My Goddess, and other animes similar to them even surpass a lot of American writing.

AND ANIME IS NOT DUMB!!!!!!!!!!!! :illgetu:

Pearl, my dad is the same in being completely unable to understand why we like the things we like. Granted he doesn't watch TV much but how is me and my brother liking Doctor Who or us all liking video games that different from him liking football? We certainly can't understand that interest at all.
(Also, your signature image, which I love, matched that post so well..)

I don't like anime much either, and I have watched quite a few episodes and clips and things from various series. It's really all a matter of preference and no use calling anyone else's opinion dumb or wrong, guys.

I watched the odd episode with a friend when we were 14, but I never encountered it on TV. As far as I can remember her favourite series was called Gravitation.

But no matter, I'm not going to go seeking out anime. It's not on TV, and I won't be watching it online.

Spirited Away was an interesting movie but felt oddly charmless.
Totoro was creepy.

My favourite TV shows are Deadwood, Arrested Development, Malcolm in the Middle, Wallander (Swedish with subtitles), followed by scores of sitcoms which I like to veg out to. Mostly British ones (Blackadder, Black Books, Green Wing, The IT Crowd, Red Dwarf, 12 Storeys High etc etc), but also something like Frasier.

@ Ljos - speaking of video games, I got Fable III for Christmas and it's very good. I'm really not a gamer but I know my way round a controller ;D

I do have to admit, American TV isn't all bad. Castle, NCIS, NCIS: LA, Big Bang Theory (even funnier for me since I understand all the refrences!), Fringe, etc. are all pretty good.

But...Totoro creepy? I always thought it was cute! As for Spirited Away--it's presently my favorite Studio Ghibli film, followed very closely by Kiki's Delivery Service.

Alright, so you watch only comedies for the most part it seems. the writing there tends to be repetitive, and less than intelligent. I love them, but they almost never make you think. The ones that do are magic though. Big Bang Theory being my personal favorite.

But for the most part I like Sci-Fi, Some drama, and a lot of anime, because the themes tend to make you think, and show real intense emotions. Comedies are fine a lot of the time, but Watching things that challenge you helps you grow. And you have to find the anime that's meant for grown ups, it's got the better writing obviously.

..And Fable lost chapters is the best of the series. just saying you should try it. :)

I like Miyazaki's films, but I'm just not that interested in animations in general. I love the ones I watched as a kid, but moreso because I loved them as a kid than because they're amazingly well made.

I've never tried Fables, never had much time for video games really, so I haven't tried that many. I'm currently addicted to Zeus: Master of Olympus, a strategy game for PC set in ancient Greece.. I love strategy games where you have mythology mixed into it.

I watched one episode of The Big Bang Theory and it wasn't funny, and it seemed pretty dumb.

Since when is all comedy 'less than intelligent'? Try watching 12 Storeys High, or Arrested Development.
And you appeared to brush over my mention of Wallander and Deadwood altogether.

Broody doesn't necessarily mean more intelligent.

Help me 'grow'? That sounds like a school prospectus.

Regarding animation, I enjoy The Simpsons (who doesn't?) and the earlier seasons can be very clever.
Animation works best in movies. Anything by Pixar is usually incredibly moving and very wonderful.

The 'growing' you speak of, if it exists (if it even has any meaning), belongs to films most of the time. How much growth can you expel into viewers over 23 minutes?

The last good film I watched was The Lives of Others, it's fantastic. It was very slow, very subtle, and very moving.

@ sarof: Anime and sci-fi can also be funny while they're playing with your brain. Ah! My Goddess is an anime that's particularly good at that.

@ ljos: Miyazaki makes beautiful movies in general! I still love the ones I watched when I was a kid.

It's not about the 23 minutes, it's about the whole season. Watching it all at once. saying that television shows are less than movies because the episodes are shorter, is like saying books with short chapters are less than a short story, because it's longer than the one chapter in the book.

And arrested development is on fx, and therefore not worth watching. Their writers are drooling monkeys who have no clue. The humor is pathetic, and requires no thought. Deadwood is okay, but I haven't seen much of it. Don't get HBO.

Saying that anime is dumb, since you haven't actually seen any is kinda ignorant. Just saying. You don't have to like it, but dismissing it without actually knowing it is really fail.

Now since this is all entirely subjective, let it go.

Anyway. I like D&D anyone else?

@ Pearl: Who doesn't like the Simpsons. Hm, I don't know maybe...ME AND MY FAMILY?!? Not to mention most of my friends also think that it is mind-numbingly stupid. And I agree with sarof; don't bash something you know nothing about. Just one episode of an anime may not be thought-provoking, but when you see the entire season, then your brain gets working. As for the FX and HBO shows, I don't know about them so I'm not going to review them. There's only one HBO show that I've seen and that's True Blood, and while I've only seen an episode or two of it I like it.

@ sarof: Never played it, sadly.

And to everyone, I need to get off. Mom wants to go home, while I don't. Later (I hope)!

HBO usually does a good job. I liked it while I got the channel a couple years ago.

...Speaking of Dr. Who. Does anybody think that the post office commercial with the evil clown doll, is reminiscent of the episode blink? I think they were watching it when they wrote the commercial.

Lmao, refusing to watch Arrested Development because it's aired on Fox?
Fox didn't write the damn thing, they just gave it a slot. How do you think TV works?
Never mind the critical acclaim, eh?

That's just balls though. Every channel has good programs and shit programs.

Either way. I saw an episode or two. It's dumb jokes, which just repeat themselves over and over. I don't like that.

The British shows are pretty good usually. Red Dwarf was really good.

I love Red Dwarf, but I would say AD was a cleverer show.

Although RD has the upper-hand with stories, its episodes are very nicely sculpted.

See that's what I care about when it comes to shows. The plot line, the story. anything else is unimportant to me.

I don't think TV is about stories, it's better suited to film.

But it depends on the series. Some are carried by the stories and are lacking in some areas, others are just gold anyway.

----------

Sometimes the idea of the rounded ending, the happy resolution is repetitive.

AD ends at a different point every episode.

So you're saying that ALL television should be reality tv? because otherwise it's telling a story, and that's its purpose. Even the news is telling a story.

Not sure how you jumped to that.

If it's about the arc of the series, then having very segmented, circular stories seems detrimental to that arc.

Not really. That's how literature worked for decades. Ever heard of the pulp fiction magazines of the late 1800's and early 1900's? Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote his great books, in a monthly chapter format. Tarzan is still a literary treasure, and frankly the movies have paled in comparison. The segmented nature of a television series is only detrimental if someone is stupid enough to forget what happened last time. If it were a real problem, then a series of books wouldn't work either.

And I didn't jump to anything. you said "I don't think tv is about stories."

I have read Tarzan, and frankly it's a load of homo-erotic hogwash.

It caused much merriment in the class, partly because of the unbelievable black and white minstrel show style racism.
