We've been binge-watching "Pushing Daisies." Such a clever show... so, of course, doomed.

Aye, that's basically the way with american telly. Look at Arrested Development. It put up a valiant effort, but to no avail
Thank goodness for Hulu. Coming to the rescue and providing me my Sunny fix. Are you a fan of that show?

Why is it whenever American TV actually comes up with something good, it gets axed? Do Americans like stupid stuff that much?

I've never seen it. For the most part, television is just background noise while I work on other stuff.
Americans take comfort in clichés. If its new and full of intrigue, it scares people. They don't know where its going and people are afraid of what they don't know.
Consequently, the reason why reality TV shows are so popular is because they appeal to our senses of voyeurism and schadenfreude.

Hulu - It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Mac and Charlie: White Trash - Watch the full episode now.
Do you have a hulu account? You need one to view, with the profanity and what not.
It's madcap, and i like that variety of thing. I'd actually say in it's dynamic, it's like arrested development. But certainly more perverse. And as such, it's not for everyone.
Aaand that's why I've largely given up on american television.
I cannot stomach reality shows. They turn me off to such a degree.

Trust me: Sunny is on my list. I'm still forcing my way through Farscape. xD
I couldn't watch reality TV even when it wasn't saturating the market. >>

I enjoyed Farscape, but I never got a good viewing regime down for it.

I just think that reality TV is the dumbest thing ever invented. And that fear of change would probably be why Americans are prone to being morons. If I see something new and like it, THEN I'M WATCHIN' IT DAMMIT!

Well, the boom of reality TV came about because of the writer's strike in... 2008? I might be wrong... I just remember I was living in the dorms. Reality TV is cheap and the networks needed content to fill all the shows that were down.
And you're not far from the truth saying that reality TV makes people dumber. Granted, its not the only reason, but according to this article by Cracked, you might find some of the studies mentioned very interesting: 6 Studies That Prove Reality TV Is Causing the Apocalypse | Cracked.com

Talk about completely uncreative. And now the stupid filler crap the networks came up with is the only thing that anyone wants to watch. That's another reason for me to NOT write for any networks.

Surely the massive wave of it came earlier than that?

I'm sure it did, but the writer's strike is about when e became... more acceptable. Prior, it was kind of like game shows and it appealed to our love of competition. The winner of Survivor was awarded a lot of money. But if I remember correctly, 2008 was when Tila Tequila became big and the networks saw a cash cow.
A very malnourished cow.
Anyway, I could be wrong about that. It could have been earlier. I don't watch enough TV, honestly, to have an accurate opinion.

Same here. The only stuff I watch on TV are the news, a few crime dramas, and AFV.

I watch my British comedy dvds. Youtube (again, mostly British comedy, like panel shows, along with of course the random selection of short youtube videos that I suppose everyone watches.) PBS. A random smattering of television. And hulu, if they have what I want.

The pool boy is just eye-candy. You don't need him to clean the pool. You just want him to clean the pool.
