Seen, no. Heard, felt, and smelled? Yes.

Smelled?

Hm... I've never smelled one.

If you follow my line of thinking, a spirit harnesses all aspects of a thing without the need of the physical body. So the scent of a thing would be one aspect of it that can be evoked.

This is true. I've just never smelled one myself.

There's two at least in my house in South Bend. One of them smells earthy. The other is kind of floral. Usually get that smell right around the time I start hearing singing. Its pretty eerie.

I've had a few encounters before in my parents' house. Mostly just the feeling of being followed or watched, the occasional tune coming from the woods. Though, when I got older I would wake up with handprints across my back and bruises all over. Generally, I'm a bit glad that I don't live there anymore.

Its not generally something that I keep an eye out for. When it comes to the supernatural, I stick with things that I can confirm with other people. Tarot cards, herbal remedies, the congress of ravens gathering ominously outside my cabin...

Its very hard for me to entertain ideas of visions and the like when I suffer from a nervous disorder. It becomes a battle of what's real and what is in my head.

Yeah, faye like to screw with you.

And depending on which ones they are, you can confirm it with others.

The path that I am taking hasn't lead me to any faye as far as I have noticed, and I find it best not to seek out things unless I am guided to them. For example, my path guides me to tarot because my friend Jason is a skilled reader, totems because that was a belief held by many in my social group, and herbalism because one of my neighbors was a botanist. If I stumble upon faye, then I stumble upon faye. But they are not something that I intend to seek out. At the root of things, my beliefs boil down to a lot of Channist tradition.

Perhaps you should apologize and start your friendship anew.

I'd go with the latter.

@Hyena: What are your totems. :) I don't mean to pry, it's just something I'm interested in.

Totems can change throughout one's life, but its been rather constant that two of my guiding totems at least are the crow and the spider, representing spirituality and storytelling respectively. Estelle has tagged me as a mongoose, Joel tells me I'm a hedgehog. In either case, my main spirit animal appears to be some sort of rodent or weasel: based on my tendency to burrow, my movements, focus on family matters, and loyalty to one's own kind.

My totemic system is different from most, but my totems are Lion, Wolf, and Brown Bear. One of my friends called me a cobra because I'm a completely different person when I'm angry.

Interesting. I generally just follow the themes in my life. I suppose one of my totems could also be a tree, now that I think of it.

The way I understand it, you can have an infinite number of totems throughout your life. This is based upon the human ability to change oneself, and that throughout your life you will have different guides. It was explained to me by Jason that a guide can be identified through things that frequently appear in your life in spite of attempts to move on. Feather imagery (particularly black feathers), webs, leaves, and sun imagery show up in my work often without my realizing it. So it stands to reason that those can be counted as signs of a guide. The rodent component is more an observation of others when I ask them what they think, and I generally agree.

Apart from the one friend who thought my totem was an elf. I'm not even going to go there...

Well, first you have to pray to the Norse God Odin...
