I was really young, I wasn't even three years old, almost, but not. I was two years and around ten months old when I first started playing video games. I still played outside a lot, but it gave me something to do when I was sick and not allowed outside (can't say raining because I loved the rain... Puddle jumping is fun.).
I'm not sure what was the first game I played, mom said she's pretty sure it was a Mario game, and I won't argue with that, I remember playing Mario before I played Mortal Kombat.
I still play Mario, even though from years and years of not playing it I can't really remember any of the secrets and... well... I suck at it.
For me, it depends on the maturity of the child if they should be playing video games or not, that and if they still want to play outside.

So tell me...
How old were you, and what game was it?
Do you still play that game now?
If so, have you gotten better or worse?
If not, why not?
Do you think that kids should be playing this game at the age you were?

I was four the first time I played a video game and it was asteroids on my parent's atari. I actually did just recently play asteroids, but on the computer, and I'm pretty sure I'm worse at it now, but part of that is because I have a netbook and so most of the time I can't see the full playing screen at one time and having to scroll up and down when in a game is not very helpful when you are trying to get a high score.
I think that its okay for four-year olds to play video games, but I would suggest that they are more along the lines of an educational game. I remember around the same time I also played reader rabbit and number munchers, both educational games, on my computer (a dos!) and with so many more options out there today for educational games, there isn't an excuse for parents to buy their kids age inappropriate video games.

I've never used an Atari, but I want to try... and netbooks are mean like that. My friend has one, but she doesn't play games on it, she uses it for school work and writing.
If we'd had a computer at the time I probably would have been playing educational games (didn't have a computer in the house until I was around... 9-ish?), but Mario did have parts where you had to read... A lot of the games I play now do. So they did help me learn to read, well... Not MK, but that was just a button masher for me, and it was funny. Mom didn't get the system for me, it was bought for the household, and I was the youngest, she didn't want to tell me "no" when everyone else was allowed to, she just made sure that I didn't spend all my time in front of it. I loved being outside more than anything.

Also, thank you for the reply. =3

Well, that and we drew.

But anyways... the first games I remember playing are Zelda, Donkey Kong, Mario, etc.
Then Mortal Combat and Tekken as I got a tiny bit older.
I remember playing Zelda! Still do too.
xD

It's good that you got to draw with your dad too.
Mom and I played video games and either played hide-and-seek or went puddle jumping.
Among a number of other things I can't remember right now. =3

The first time I remember playing a video game I think I was four or five, of course knowing my dad I could have been before that and I just don't remember. It was F-zero I think, maybe some other racing game, could have been Mario Kart, I don't know. Whatever it was, it was on the Super Nintendo. Early on I also remember a lot of Street Fighter but I am pretty sure that was after I learned the controls by racing.

I still do play both mario kart and the occasional F-zero game but they are newer versions for Game Cube, Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Ds

I assume I have gotten better, well I hope I have anyway XD I think I remember winning a few times but at that age and considering my dad is pretty good, he probably let me. If it was F-zero I probably haven't gotten better though XD The last couple times I played I fell off the track pretty fast. If it was mario kart I am pretty sure I am better because I beat him in that quite a bit on the Ds.

I think that the parents should decide if their kids can handle playing video games at that age and if they play the games but also do normal other little kid stuff it should be fine. Even at that age I knew too much inside on the video games and television was bad and only did it a little bit. If people let their kids know that too and set limits on how long and what type of games they can play, I see no problem there.

I've never been very good at racing games.
I did like Mario Kart for the N64.
But I'm not good at them. xD

Oh man. The first game I've personally ever played was Adventure Island on NES. I don't remember how old I was - something like five? It was at my grandma's house with my cousin. I don't play that game now because 1) it wasn't my game, 2) I don't have an NES anymore, and 3) I have no idea if Adventure Island is still around for uh, buying. It did made me love platformers though, and I have to say I'm pretty good at platforming, although I don't own a Wii so I actually don't own any good current ones (oh Donkey Kong Country Returns how I wish I have that game!).

I don't really have an opinion on kids playing games though. I mean everything in moderation, right? If they want to play we should let them, but, definitely not let say, a six year old play six hours of games a day. They need to see some sun some time.

I must have been about three or four. My father gave me his old Game Boy along with Super Mario Land. Needless to say it was a slippery slope from there on in. I still play Super Mario Land occasionally - mostly for nostalgia's sake. I can't really say I'm that brilliant at it anymore but I still enjoy it.

As for kids playing it, I see no harm in it. It's not a particularly violent game nor is it complicated. :XD

Hmm, I do believe I was around 4 or 5 when my mother's friend brought over a sega genesis and a few games that he no longer had time to play. I swear, Echo the Dolphin made more sense to me as a child than it does now.

How old were you, and what game was it? I was 4, and it was the original Legend of Zelda and Castlevania
Do you still play that game now? I would but our NES is picky about playing games
If so, have you gotten better or worse? Most likely..... Wose.
If not, why not?
Do you think that kids should be playing this game at the age you were? My son does just fine play Perfect Dark for the xbox 360. So I don't really see that much of a problem.

I was five or six...I was watching my brother play pokemon red and when he left I started over his game and ended up loving it. I also loved jigglypuff to death when I was a kid, everytime I started over that game I always had one in my party. XD

I was a wee little lass of about four when I first picked up a Nintendo controller, and it was Duck Hunt. Oh little dog, how you taunted me. I actually got started on video games because of a handicap I was born with with my hands, my pediatrician actually suggested to my mother buying me a Nintendo system because the button meshing would help me to learn to coordinated my hand movements and control them.

I still play duck hunt and alot of different games that come down the chute, and own all the systems. XD But even now, as when I was a kid, I loved going outside and playing sports at the same time. I would and still do go through like a video game binge and then might not play anything for a few weeks or months.

My first game was either Pokemon gold (hell yeah I still play that) and Zelda: Oracle of Ages (which I am still trying to beat) xD, Growing up I wasn't allowed to have gaming systems that connected to the t.v. so I had to settle with gameboys xD
I'm 17 now and at the moment I have a gameboy colour, a gameboy advanced, a gameboy advanced sp, a nintendo dsi (which is crap and almost starting to malfunction, the ds lites are better). I also have a sega genesis (which is older than me and in perfect working condition), a play station one and an old school x-box ^.^ the play station and x-box I got recently in the last 6 months xD. I like the older game systems better than the new ones, they tend to malfunction alot less.

I think I was 9 or 10 when I really got into them, my parents wouldn't let me have my own game boy until then...But I think the first games I ever played I probably played when I was 8, at a friends house once in a while.

I was probably, no definitly 3 when I started playing Video games. I played Ocarina of Time, though I could only beat the first temple until I was 7 or 8 where I beat the entire game without a guide, including the water temple XDD I've gotten slightly worse since then, the water temple is definitly harder for me. I remember my brother had JUST about beat the game, like he just needed to defeat Ganon, and my three year old self deleted his account (I couldn't read much, all I saw was a D and I was like "oooh my name starts with D XDD)

I don't remember how old I was the first time I played video games. Pretty young I think. I know I was younger than ten. Maybe around six or seven? It's hard to say. But I didn't own any video games back then. My grandparents had an old Atari system at their vacation house and I would play games on that with my dad when we were there for vacation. Things like Ms. Pacman and Dig Dug. And later on they had an NES system at their house and I would play Mario and Duck Hunt and some other random games they had. XD But I didn't have any of these things myself at my house and I think I missed out on a lot of stuff since I didn't have any of my own. Then again, it's probably better that I didn't, because as a kid I actually went outside and played, so it was probably more healthy. >_> Anyway, I got my first video game systems and games when I was thirteen. Yeah, that old. XD I got the original Playstation and the Gameboy Color that Christmas and since then I've slowly gotten more and more into video games. Of course then my boyfriend came along and got me even more into video games. :P

XDD since Sora was born...........pretty sure he had a gameboy in his mother's womb HA HA
well not really, but around that time. thanks to Sora's older brother, he was the type to get the latest games and stuff when they came out and usually sora would get the old ones while he got the new ones ^3^
gosh, Sora misses the good ole days when new consoles came out like every 3 or 4 years instead of every freakin 6 months >.<

I was probably five or six when I first started playing video games. I remember my dad surprising my sister and I with a trip to the store to pick up an original Nintendo way back in the day (which is funny now, considering he absolutely hates video games).

Anyway, we had ended up getting the bundle that had three games on one cartridge (Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and World Class Track Meet), so my first game was one of those (and I honestly don't remember which one it was). I do remember the hours I spent playing Duck Hunt with my sister, though; my dad would get after us because we'd put the gun right next to the TV to shoot the ducks. :)

Unfortunately, I don't play any of those games anymore. As I got older, I got tired of console games and moved toward PC games instead. I'm sure if I picked up those old games again I'd be terrible at them, so maybe it's for the best. :P

As for kids playing those games, that's perfectly fine. Those games seemed to be designed for families, so there's definitely no harm. :)

I don't even remember the first time I played a video game. They were always part of my daily life, I suppose. My first games were the original Donkey Kong, Mario and Zelda. Zelda was my favourite after Faxanadu. I'll never forget that game- it was so amazing. The soundtrack for that game is probably one of my favourite video game soundtracks of all time. I mourn when we sold it.

It's probably easier to just list when I got my first system, as it's very likely I was playing video games before then, but I was too young to remember.

I got an NES for christmas in like, 1989 or so, and I've been playing video games ever since. But it wasn't really until either the Game Boy or the Super NES that I came to know and love the greatest of all video-game genres: the RPG.

To this date, Chrono Trigger remains one of my favorite games of all time. I've beaten it, both in cartridge and emulator form, at least two dozen times. Likewise, the Final Fantasy series, notably 6(American 3,) 7, 9, and 10. I didn't much care for 8, and while 4(or is it 5? The American FF2) was fun, it didn't have the oomph that 6 had. I also played a LOT of zelda games, most of the super marios that were released prior to the n64 (I don't much care for the gamecube, wii games, but I can be cajoled into playing mario party or wario ware sometimes.) I also played a lot of the old Apogee side-scrolling shooters like the original duke nukems (the ones BEFORE he became a lecherous, cigar smoking badass) and other random games with similar formats but completely incomprehensible and forgettable sci-fi names.

My first system was an N64, but I was gaming before that. The first game I remember was a Sesame Street game which ran on DOS. I also played the original Myst over my mother's shoulder and (occasionally, when Mom was out of the house), got to watch Dad play Doom on the DOS. xD
