You can do characters for vowels separately and the n character, but pretty much everything else is paired vowel/consonant style.

Because kanji makes things easier to read in Japanese.
And some things sound the same, but have different kanji. So when you type stuff, it gives you a list of what kanji you could be looking for.

when you're typing like normal, and you're in JP mode, it automatically changes to the kanji for a word if you press space.

There are no spaces in Japanese; so when you hit space you're probably changing it. XD
And there are no th, sc, sh, etc... Most consonants are separated by a vowel.
There's cases where some aren't, but... xD
