Simple. Menewsha.
I was a member of gaia since GoGaia. Since before all the glits and trolls. Before the infection of greed and all..It was a great site back then. I remember, they only had one game and it started around 04 which was the fishing game. Now, well..I haven't been on that site in months. I never saw anyone fish, all the scriptors and scammers were controlling the community. You couldn't even use most of the old features like going into your house. 1. Because new users were probably cybering in there. 2. The coding was HORRID. It'd jam up your computer and javascript would go insane. And almost every single event was involving buying something or asking you for your information to get gaiacash. No to mention, I got hacked around 5 times! The lag was also unbearable in Towns, mostly run by noobs with coding material. The forums were usually inappropriate material or uncontrollable spam.
As for Mene. I've never been trolled, hacked, scammed and banned for no apparent reason.
My favorite part of mene is probably the Staff. They crack me up. I love all the wittyness. I love how the NPC actually converse once in a while. And they do so much for the community, I can't help but be grateful. I like the overall atmosphere it has. I'm going to be around mene for a long while it seems. And I'm probably never going back to gaia..my computer likes to be virus free.
OHH, I forgot one thing! Mene is great at layering. As for gaia...I like my avatar to not have neon green gunk around the edges and what not. So, there's my take on this whole mene vs gaiaonline.

Menewsha all the way! I've never felt comfortable with Gaia, like no one really cared that I was on the site, except those that I role played with. Here, people care about what I have to say. Whether it's right or wrong, people listen and respond and don't decide that I'm an idiot before getting to know you.

I have never had any of those problems, probably because I pretty much keep to the games and aquarium forums. There, it is all about making my avy. I like the look of the avy -- it reminds me of a stationary set I used to collect as a little girl called Beautiful Sunday. So soft and gentle.
Mene has a more mature look to it -- but I am in the forums a lot more...

@ AlexandraKitty- Yeah, I was never one for the aquarium. I would just like getting the knight fishes but I'd only decorate it.
I probably ran into those problems a lot because of the average daily use of the site. Mostly everyday was a "oh no, i'm scared to log in because I probably got hacked." My main account was worth a lot of gold from hoarding and such. Now, that gold seems useless because it's not a fun site to be on anymore in my opinion.

Menewsha. Gaia is too crazy for me, the only reason I go on there is to play the jigsaw game. I love jigsaws.
Plus, I've actually made friends on Mene.
But, I do have to give Gaia some credit. I would probably never know about avatar sites if I hadn't found Gaia.
So yeah, I'm thankful for that ^^

I have a gaia account, and I'm generally active on there, but it's mostly because I like drawing and doing requests and such for the pretty items. It helps improve my art skills. I used to roleplay a lot on that site, but people these days don't have a clue what they're doing anymore, and roleplays always die fast or are filled with pointless one line posts about nothing. There's good discussions here and there, but generally it's a can of spam, with people cybering and flaming each other left and right; that of course is against the gaia TOS, however, there's hardly any moderation at all anymore.
|
Zomg is alright, but I've always enjoyed wandering around towns; I can no longer do that because of how laggy it is, and my house? It might as well just be an abandoned building, the codes and javascript is so messed up that I can't even put any of my items in my house. This problem with coding is rampant around half the site, and it makes me wonder what the staff does in their spare time besides trying to steal my money.
Which brings us to this:
Quote:
I think the most irritating thing of all is how much geared towards money gaiaonline has become, I understand needing money to run a site, and paying for the monthly collectibles was one thing, but the cash shop with limited items that's constantly tempting you to 'buy now' before they go is ridiculous. Then there's the chance items where they want you to waste real money on the 'chance' you'll get a good item. They also intentionally make it so that ordinary items cannot compare to these 'premium items', and thus, people who can't afford to buy them become noobs because their avatars are not decked out.
Gaia online was much better in the olden days, before it became crazy money geared and before the majority became jerks.
|
That said, I like the avatars on that site as much as the ones on here, they might be a bit more cartoony and blurry, but there's a lot more fun items too. There's also things, such as searching for items on the marketplace or customizing your profile, that's much more convenient and fun on gaia than it is on this site.
However, this site is younger than gaia, and unlike gaia, the staff here listens to its users and works to please them; while right now there's a lot that's inconvenient, menewsha has a lot of potential to improve and surpass where gaia has failed simply because the people who run it listen and work harder than those on the other site. Gaia no longer listens to its users, and it shows- the site is essentially chaos with a url; contrastingly, menewsha is far more organized and in touch with its members. This could arguably be because the community is smaller, but I think it's moreso because the community is a good one. While there are good people on gaia, they're few and far between, here, people are willing to talk and be kind, and hacks are rare.
So in the end my rating is that gaia is more convenient feature wise, but this site has a far better community, and has the potential to become just as good if not better than gaia feature wise someday.

I love both sites equally! They are both my favorite sites and there are diferent reasons why I like them both.
Gaia - Has some really nice features, such as virtual hollywood and towns...... it's very fun to hang out there. c: Also, I have a really nice avatar there with quite a lot of gold, and I have lots of awesometastical friends.
Menewsha- This site is a great place to take a break away from Gaia. Here, it seems like everybody is very close and it's easy to get to know other people. c:
Plus I like the Games and the avatars here.

Menewsha, hands down!!
Gaia's front page, for starters, is a perfect example of how busy the entire site is. My eyes have no idea where to look first or even where to go if I'm looking for something specific. All the advertisements, while understandably a great source of revenue, are way too distracting. Ads on the sides, top or bottom is better than putting them smack dab in the middle of all the site links and information.
Menewsha is simple, and friendly and their avatars are so much better! Gaia avatars have no neck, and that has ALWAYS bothered me... and I've been a member on Gaia since before the first CI came out. (I just don't go on anymore. Ever.)
I feel so at home at Menewsha, whereas ALL I feel over on Gaia is OVERWHELMED. There are so many items now, and normally you'd think that would be a good thing, but with so many different kinds of items I have no idea where to begin looking for the ones I may want.
I'll never go back to Gaia. Menewsha is my online home! (Besides the roleplaying forum Suits of Decadence....which is TRULY my online home. :p)

Maybe it's just me, but while Mene seems like a really interesting and tight knit community, I prefer Gaia over Mene. It is still a rather fun place if you ignore the ' bad ' things such as trolls and such. It seems you guys found yourself in the forums with most trolls and little discussion. The forum in which I made my ' home ' looks down on trolls, reports them, and provides interesting discussions. I'm rather indifferent to the whole " Gaia : -insert items here that requires cash- :D " While I usually never have money to buy them, I can still earn most items using their currency of gold with the Marketplace, and I'm always up for new items, I'm a total sucker for them because I really enjoy variety. And I quite enjoy the ' faster ' moving forums. But that's just me.

Menewsha's moderators are much more likely to reply, and some of them have poor attitudes, but, at least they reply with a higher frequency, and I can appreciate that.
|
I'm just going to address this really fast; as a former moderator on Gaia, I can tell you it is extreme difficult to address all the users who PM you. :[ Because of the moderator tiers, there is sometimes information that you do or do not have access to. Not only that, but Gaia moderators have weekly quotas of reports that you must complete in order to keep your position. Granted, I'd answer the PMs I got, but it's difficult to tell someone that I wasn't the right moderator to talk to, or that they needed to send an e-mail or report. u.u
Don't get me wrong, there are many mods on Gaia who are... well, not so friendly and don't answer PMs. I noticed that many mods only talked to other mods. At least the older ones. I can understand that, but... here, you can strike up a conversation with even the admins. It's very welcoming. It's a lot less elitist.
You're right about the bad customer service on Gaia's part; One thing that made me step down from my position was the fact that the admins would, say, make huuuuuge changes to Gaia on a Friday (admins and developers are off for the weekends) and leave the moderators, who had nothing to do with the changes, to take care of the damage. Like when they banned the tobacco pixels (only to reinstate it). They wouldn't even warn the moderators ahead of time before they made the changes. >_<
Aaaand I can safely say I prefer to be on Mene than Gaia, simply because I enjoy the atmosphere here. I hardly even go on Gaia anymore.

Gaia is nice, the people there are horrid though. I like the items and the virtual worlds, the lag isn't that much of a problem from my point of view. I really like to go into towns and catch some bugs and then sell them in market place but it makes me sick when I enter Towns and see the topic there. It's usually something obscene or or hard to figure out what it's written.
Here people are nicer and I'm actually not afraid to get in the forums.
As for the gold, I find it here much more easy to obtain. Sure you don't get 2000g from bootygrabbing or such but the prices aren't some number so big I'm not even sure how to read it. I was on Gaia back when a pricey item would have been 20000 and you had to save up. Now a 20000 item is easily obtainable. I hope Mene will not go in the same direction Gaia did.

Wow...just...wow. Both have their ups and downs, really, and I hate the trolls and twits there, tho there's trolls and twits in real life, too...and it's not a cool thing to be filling up a lime pit with bodies just because you can.
Basically, this is a place where people are a bit more relaxed and mature, at least from what I've read so far...this thread has turned into a hitfest for both, and well, Ouch.
In case your wondering, same username if you wanna research/stalk me there, and before someone goes nit-picking, yeah, I'm a guy, I prefer a female avi, and if this is a crime, my account won't work when I login tomorrow. No big, will show me that even what seems cool is actually a buncha fillintheblanks.
I like Gaia, been there for a long time, had an avi there as far back as '03, lost the account info. I just got in here, last attempt several months ago failed, and so far I like what I see, and when I return, hopefully it will remain so.
The world is a sandbox. Learn to play nice or get out and go home. So lets play nice.
I prefer nice.

Menewsha. The members here are so much nicer, and there isn't as many trolls roaming about greeding gold. LOL. Much easier to keep decent conversations going. And for me it's the same as the person above me. I was banned because of hackers/trolls whatever you wanna call them. I quit and never wanna go back.
The staff here are much more understanding/friendly.
Over there it just seems like all they really care about is getting their money, not paying attention to members. :P

gaia.
the site is more active and i like that posting isn't the only way to earn gold. i don't really get into discussions. i'm glad they think of lurkers.
i also love earning gold just for surfing the site. then before i know it, i have 10k, then 20k.

Neither.
Gaia has more items I like. It has more games I like. It is also easier to get gold to buy these items I want. Forums go faster so I have more things to talk about instead of here.
They also have a lot more douchebags. Some items are way too expensive in the marketplace. There are more spam posts in these forums....and Gaia has gotten very money hungry. And zOMG's glitches they will never fix.
Menewsha.....has one game I'm okay at, but has a low limit of gold I can earn off of it. There are less douchebags here. Items are cheaper here. Menewsha isn't money hungry (yet).
Gold is a lot harder to get. It is based on post size instead of how much you posted today. Also, you can't get as much gold per post as you can Gaia. I have no items I want to buy really (Though if someone has some item ideas for my character to look like a Mage from Dragon Age....PM me your ideas).
And there are probably many things I've forgotten on both sites-good and bad.

They have their ups and down. Gaia I can freely curse and no mod would give a crap. While on Mene I have to watch what I say and that ruins my fun. D; Mene I can equip multiple of my items and Gaia I cannot. Though I do admit Gaia has that hungry-money thing going on. It's hard to even make up to a billion Gaia gold. I can't do it, I only have probably 200k and that's as far as I can go. Mene gold takes a while but it's quite nice because nobody judges you on your item or how much gold you have. ^^
