I used to be a fan of Nightwish, they have epic battle music that I always felt was great for movies. BUT something went crazy with the lead singer Tarja and she has been replaced by a woman named Annette.
To be frank (which I'm not, my name is Lilium), I don't like Annette's voice very much compared to the haunting voice of Tarja. They sound more like a pop band to me now, though the music itself is still decent.
What are your feeling on the subject?

I prefer Annette's voice. Tarja got to be overbearing after more than two of three songs. I can stand Annette for a lot longer and that's saying something since I tend to dislike the vast majority of female vocals though occasionally the music itself gets annoying because it can be very similar. Sure, I like a little touch of epic metal here and there but mainly when there's some variety to it.

I can't listen to their music in general for too long either, I typically prefer music that has no words. Or things like Dark Sanctuary and a little bit of Asrams stuff (mainly Elizabeth and Monstro).

I'm very picky with instrumental works. I usually have to be in the mood for them or working on something like a long paper.

You mean Marco? The long-haired blond? I like Tuomas, personally.

I think that both Tarja and Annette have nice voices. And for the songs they did with Tarja, those were well done. Same thing with Annette. As for being able to listen to them for a long time...well, when I get a new CD of theirs(which I think I have them all right now) I tend to listen to it 2-3 times, before switching to other music. But right now, I have Nightwish in a play list with about another 1000 songs from groups ranging from Poison to Metallica, and from Eluveitie to Rhapsody of Fire.
I will admit, that I love the version of Phantom of the Operah they did. Its always something good to listen to no matter what is going on...at least, thats the way it is in my mind. >.>
Edit: Ok, I just checked, and there is way too much music in this playlist. I could listen for over 140hours, and never hear the same song twice in a row(or if I do, its VERY rare). 1772 songs with a little from most rock/metal genres/sub-genres.

Pweep: Aw snap XD big typo mistake! But yeah I meant Marco. Tuomas is really good too, I wish the boys sang more then either of the women.
Avatre: Oh I loved their version of that song too. XD I listened to it very much. Another one I loved was Wishmaster.

I like them both and each are good and specific things.
I got to see them live in 2008 and loved every moment of it.
Fun fact: Tarja and I have the same birthday

Annette's voice just irks me for some reason. I refuse to touch any of their newer music. Tarja, though, she took advantage of her operatic voice and that was what made Nightwish special to me.

I like both, actually. Nightwish is one of my favorite bands, and I like all of their songs, regardless of whether Tarja or Annette sings them.
I can't really imagine Tarja singing the songs from Dark Passion Play, though. It may just be that I've gotten so used to hearing Annette sing them, but somehow I can't imagine how they would sound with Tarja's voice.
Honestly, though, which singer the band has doesn't really matter so much to me. What I love so much about Nightwish isn't so much the singer's voice as the beautiful lyrics Tuomas writes, regardless of who sings them. Maybe this is strange to some people, but the lyrics are what I care about most in my music, and Nightwish has some of the most deep and meaningful songs of any band I know of, and so long as Tuomas continues to write such incredible and poetic songs, it's not really going to make a huge difference to me who sings them.

It's not that Annette's voice is bad, she just hasn't found her "voice", so to speak.
She can sing, sure, but she hasn't had the opportunity to really use her voice in a way befitting to her.
Like you said Aura, Tarja took advantage of her voice and used it well, Annette just needs to do the same, with what she's capable of.
