I know it's pretty much old news but this is perhaps my top or one of my top favorite movies and thought it'd be nice to see others who likes the movie as well! ^^
I haven't seen this in a while but it's one of the few movies that I would pay to go see a few more times and buy the DVD when it came out. I can't say that about too many movies now-a-days.
do they have it in english? i've only ever seen the spanish version and it made me laugh like hell when she tried to fight the guy who ate children as she went to get something out of a key hole or something, with the chalk on the wall? and the ending really made me go 'what?!' because i never trusted the fawn in the first place.

It's in Spanish as it is a Mexican film, it just happens to have become a rather popular film with the English speaking audiences. I doubt it would ever come out in English unless Hollywood made an awful remake, which is something they love to do...Unfortunately. :gonk:
Also, I haven't seen it since it first came out here but wasn't the fawn a good guy? Just because in ended how it ended doesn't mean he wasn't looking out for her best interests. Especially since he helped her mother when, really, he didn't have to.
no i mean in the beginning (we watched it in spanish class) all of us thought he was deceiving her and trying to send her to hell or something and we were surprised at the end that he was a good guy.
the end actually was very predictable. we knew what he was doing, but i didn't think about the little brother at that time... just that she had spilled her 'innocent' (debatable!) blood in the place so it was all good.
I love this movie. It's not often that one sees good, mature fairly tales these days.
Maybe it's just my questioning nature, but I'm not so sure about the ending of the movie.
SPOILERX
I have to wonder if she simply died and was dreaming that she had become the princess of this kingdom. I know that makes the ending really sad, but when I consider that the queen looks exactly like her mother, I have to question it. Especially since Pan said she couldn't go without killing her brother.
But I can see the ending both ways, as happy or sad.
well he said she had to spill innocent blood, and when she dripped blood into the basin from her *WOUND* it was her innocent blood. the last test was whether or not she would kill an innocent for personal gain :3
sorry for all my spoilerness everyone, i don't know how to do the spoiler bar :(
Oh I can definitely see it with the ending being happy. But I just like to question things and look at them from other perspectives. I enjoy movies that don't have a concrete ending.
It's just [ hide ] [ /hide ] without the spaces. :)
yeah i know what you're saying. i could see it being both ways: real, or a death inspired hallucination
though that sounds terrible XD with the fawn i'm more inclined to believe it. throughout the movie though i always questioned why she would want to be the daughter of SATAN lol. i couldn't fathom wanting to be the daughter of the king of the underworld.
he wasn't all that mean to her. he was just a douche to everyone around the base. and the rebels mostly. he just ignored her and molested her mother because she was carrying his child.
I thought the movie was okay but I probably wouldn't watch it again. I'm a big chicken so I honestly found a lot of it to be too creepy for me, especially that white-bodied humanoid with the eyes!
I was pretty impressed with this movie. I first saw it with one of my friends and since then have watched it whenever I could find it. I don't see a lot of movies anymore that carry that same level of originality. It was kind of one of those movies that actually got me to shut up and just sit through it; which doesn't happen often. XD I'll probably end up buying it later on.
I remember seeing that movie in the theater when I was in high school, and hating it so much that I was texting with my guy friend who was about to come to the theater and 'kidnap' me just so that I wouldn't have to be like, "Sorry guys, this movie is shit." And rudely leave, but not really leave, because I rode with them haha so sit outside the whole rest of the movie. I'm not trying to offend you or anything, everyone likes different stuff, I just thought it was absolutely awful.
Such a beautiful and sad film! I don't usually like subtitled movies, but this is definitely an exception! I'm super excited that we're watching it in my Spanish class this term!
I love this movie. Guillermo is a really great director, and he's done Hellboy 2, which was another great movie; he'll also be directing the Hobbit, which will be coming out some time next year.
And as for how creepy it was... I honestly found all the 'creepiness' interesting. Maybe it's cuz I grew up with 2 older brothers who didn't bother to censor any gore/violence/scary whatever when I was a kid, but anyway. The monster with the eyes was actually my favourite, haha. He was really cool, and I'm a hardcore lover of Guillermo's monster designs; he always blows me away with them.

And like Sho-Shonojo said, I think she may have simply been imagining everything that happened; not just at the end. Nobody ever saw the Fawn, or any other creature she saw. It could be explained that they were simply hiding their true forms so only Ophelia would see them, but regardless it seemed like a huge dream to me. The Captain... god I hated him lol When Mercedes cut his face open, me and half the people in the theater cheered.
Anyway, I found this movie really impressive, and I'm glad that it garnered as much attention as it did. Sorry for ranting, haha. Just my two cents on the subject.
Gahh...beautiful movie ;___; I actually cried at the end. I was dubious at first since I didn't know it was subtitled when my friend brought it over, but I'm really glad I listened to her recommendation to watch it.
I adore this movie, period. The fact that they did so much with effects through makeup and props and the like without the assistance of CG - that alone makes this a truly amazing piece of cinema. And I have to say, Guillermo del Toro definitely knows how to make a villain you love to hate. xD The morbidity was elegantly done as well, because it didn't take away from the movie whatsoever. In my opinion, it made it seem more realistic, thereby blurring the line between fantasy and reality all that much more.
