I have super curly hair and bleh brushing is just not great (I break combs lol). My hair dreads naturally anyway very quickly. They aren't heavy at all and they are clean. I wash my hair everyday. Dreadlocks that look terrible are usually in the earlier stages and the person most likely has straight hair and is trying to make them knot up. My hair is far from straight, so for you to just say "oh its so easy to just comb your hair everyday and brush it, etc. etc." really isn't possible or desirable for me. But I love my dreads <3 Most other people do to. A lot of people will stop me to compliment or ask about them.
Not tat nasty....but it looks kinda nasty. (Not like I was talking about, but I still wouldn't wanna touch it) And most are small dreds you're showing....most dreds I've seen are the big ones and those look horrible (the big ones)
And you could have a perm? (Just saying if you get tired of the dreds lol)
My hair is screwy. It's wavy and likes to do whatever it wants so I just brush it and go on with my life.
BTW I'm not saying you shouldn't have dreds, but depending on where you want to work....it will be hard to get a job (like around here....you might not be able to find one period)
I have small dreads. I've seen large ones, medium, etc. etc. I like all of them and think they are cool. If I ever get tired of my dreads (which probably wont happen), It's possible to just undo them but it will take atleast two days.
I'm not into chemicals (au-natural) lol.
Well, I'm not really into office jobs in cubicles. I like more liberal stuff, so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a good job without having to cut my dreads in the future.
this must be what you mean by large dreads
Most people with dread have small to medium sized ones. Some people have the larger ones, but most that i've seen have been small to medium.
That person better not get near me....I will have scizors and those dreds will be getting shorter.......especially that tree root one.
At that point........that person is just being lazy. Cut your hair in that case and it will be low maitenance.
But what if you can't get int what you want? What if you have to settle for working at a Wal-Mart or Circuit City/Best Buy or something? They aren't going to let you keep them. Same goes for any factory more than likely. Because if it comes down between homeless/starving or cutting your hair/changing the style......I'm hoping you will pick that second one.
I'm the pessimist/realist okay? Things are rarely if ever going to go the way someone wants it to. So don't take anything personally. It's just the What if scenario.
That's not being lazy. He may like the way it looks. Dreads for some people is a style and they like it that way. I wouldn't cut his hair, I would play in it xD
Oh, I'm an optimist. I don't believe in defeating myself before I have the chance. I have a saying that I stole from someone else that has dreads. "Don't go where your dreads can't go." I want a job in the arts (a lot of artists have dreads), so I don't think it would be an issue. I would never work for walmart or circuit city. If I had to do that type of job I'd work at like an organic food store/health store and they allow dreads.
So if it was between wal-mart and cutting your dreds or starving....you'd pick starving?
Or sucking off the government? >w<
Your appearance doesn't determine what group you fit into. I have piercings. I would gladly take them out for a job. The job would pay for the piercings and more. Maybe enough to get out of this hell hole.
It's hard to be an optimist when your own mother puts you down and won't help you when you're stranded because she has a date with a guy she doesn't know...and it would take her about 15 minutes to come get you and take you home. And then she gets pissed when she finds out you left the car there because it wouldn't crank. (There is more to this story)
And there's other things.
And I still say his are being lazy. He could have them shorter and he won't get a job anywhere around food. No hairnet could possibly hold that. (I'm in a somewhat bad mood due to thinking of my mother leaving me stranded and that my air died....but I still don't like dreds. Short dreds like shoulder length? Okay. Beyond that....they usually look horrible and big short ones probably look bad too)
Let's keep this conversation on dreadlocks, shall we guys? I feel like this is getting a bit heated and combative, so try to stay upbeat. Everyone is allowed to like or dislike whatever they want. You don't have to choose or convince one another otherwise.
I personally like the look of dreadlocks but have no interest in them personally. I'm a teacher and come from a conservative family, so a drastic change in my appearance like that would cause some wave.
I've got curly hair, though, so I can really see the appeal of letting it dread. It would be so much easier!
Are there people who don't take care of them properly? Yes, but there are people who fuck up plenty of things in life. I don't see why it gives you or anyone else a right to look down on them for it. Someone's hairstyle isn't stopping you from living life the way you want to. Get over it.
Also, don't forget that dreadlocks can also be a part of a person's belief system.
That being said, I plan on getting dreads some day. Unfortunately, not anytime soon because I have too much on my plate that I need to deal with right now that's a higher priority but I'll get them eventually along with a number of other things I've been dying for.
I love dreadlocks, but there are times when occasionally I see dreadlocks that look just awful to me. :/ Like the dreadlocks in the picture on post #5.
But for the most part, I love the look. :) I also love cyber dreads. xD//
As Knerd said, I have to agree. I love the way they look, but I would never have dreadlocks myself... they just wouldn't look good on me. :)

I agree with vix, its just hair.....I mean with my dreads I feel a bit more connected to them and they even help spiritually I guess, but even before I had dreads I personally admired them on others. I don't like for my hair to lump me into a group/clique because personally I don't care. My hair is a part of me and my personality but I don't let it just define me. Its just a little part of the whole person.
so, i'd recommend getting educated about dreads first before judging and calling someone lazy because they wont comb their hair or they let the locks merge (that's why that boys locks are so big. locks try to merge with one another when they are more mature.)
On a more upbeat note, jason castro's dreads are one of my favorites :3
okay i have to admit that i i personally like how dreadlocks look on other people and i do admire them when they look really nice i wouldn't mind seeing how i would look with them but with wavy hair.....or curly hair with some straight patches....it is wierd like that anyways it would be difficult for it to dread but there are some people i know who have dreadlocks and worn them like that for a very long time and they just look horrible i just think that some people look good with them and others just need to try a different hairdo because they don't look good on them but you know it is thier hair and they do what they want with it cause my opinion doesn't matter as long as the person likes how they look
I'm considering getting dreads at the end of the year, just because I can, but at the same time, I don't really want to be lumped into a stereotype. A lot of people see dreads and assume "stoner" or like was said before... "lazy." I don't think that's the image I want to show the world really, so I may just stick to my curls.
I have a friend with blonde hair and an amazing tan, and she gave herself medium-sized dreads for the summer. To be honest, they look GORGEOUS on her - the beach babe style works with her wonderfully. Her hair was lightly wavy but well-textured before. I couldn't pull off the style, but she certainly can.

Don't let that stop you from getting dreads. You can't live your life trying to please others.
You can go here, they have a pretty great support system:
But really, when I got dreads I didn't receive any negative views on them (except for some jealous school mates lol). But I mean you just have to do you! I would give them a try first before you just knock them. If you don't like them, you don't have to cut your hair. They have a product that you can use to undo them (usually takes a day or two), so no risks involved.
Of course, your beginning months of dreads may not look so great until they fully mature, but since your hair is curly then your dreads will probably look better than those others with straight hair.
Really don't worry about stereotypes. I don't think most people think that about people (unless they are from the older generation. The younger generation doesn't really care because honestly its just hair....)

Personally, I dislike dreadlocks. They're disgusting. :/ But really... I like yours. Mostly because the dreads are very small and look like braids instead. In general, though, having dreadlocks is the last thing I would ever do to my hair.
I friend on mine had dreads for a few years.
They looked great and suited her quite well, but the thing with dreads is that they start to stink after a while.
So a couple months ago, she cut them off lol.

Um....eewwww, dreads will only start to stink if she didn't wash them properly (and I just don't mean shampoo). Dreads (especially mature ones) are like sponges and suck up water. So if you don't make sure that they are COMPLETELY dry after washing, then mold can start to form because of the dampness within the dreads......this doesn't happen to those who know how to care for them. But going around with damp/wet dreads is a no-no.
I don't see the appeal of the huge dreads, but the thin ones, I think are soo cool.
My sisters boyfriend used to have small-medium sized dreads and they looked great on him. He had them for 2-3 years, before he decided to cut them off, when he wanted to start job hunting. He was already employed but wanted something better, and didn't want to be judged by his choice of hairstyle. But now that he has a job he loves, he's going to grown them back ^.^

That's so awesome Codette! Yeah, most people have the small-medium sized dreads and look great in them. I have rarely seen those with really huge dreads. A lot of places nowadays will allow for dreads in the workplace.
except he was originally looking for a job in construction.
Instead he got a job in mechanics. <before
This was a few months back that he cut it, so now it's a bit shaggy, but not long enough to start proper dreads.
Dreads are so cool! I like having my hair short and soft too much to get them myself, but I love seeing them on other people. They don't look gross if you take good care of them, which from what I hear isn't all that hard to do. They just look so... I dunno, carefree! I love them.
