I've seen a dread hawk before. The girl basically had the sides of her head shaved and kept her dreads tied back. It was badass, I loved it.

Get some thread and wrap your own.

I don't think I can. Me=going to boarding school soon which= I don't want them to tell me I have to cut them because they are over the top or distractive/unnatural. But I will be getting one of these:

Peyote stitches to add personality to your by knottysleeves

she will customize them for me for whatever design I want and shape them for my dread size.

I like the flowery sleeves and the one with the moon and sun on it. I want to costume make mine though. If you like the biohazard one, you will like this one (a costumer asked for this one):

I prefer the bio-hazard ones. Thought I'd want mine to be red.

Those are pretty awesome. Maybe I could get dreads for while I'm at uni... That'd be cool. Although my hair is only shoulder length now, and I go to uni in about six months. Maybe that's unrealistic... Ahh, this thread makes me want them so much more than I did before.

@carezee and @vix

Actually dread shrinkage isn't as much as you think it is. On the threads the guys/girls put up their dread shrinkage pics.

Dreadlock Truth - View topic - Show your Shrinkage!

Here is a side by side pic, from one member:

But sometimes it depends on the persons hair, on this page @vix a guy with hair that comes a little past mid-back, it shrunk up to his shoulders (so nearly half)

http://dreadlocktruth.com/dtforum/3/3817?start=30

his is the fourth post down.

lol back to @carzeebear

The faster you get them the better. I got mine way before college (I only have technically a year left of high school) I'm a junior now. When your dreads are longer and more mature you can just pin them up and I really don't retwist mine until like 2-3 months. The baby dreads kinda have to be retwisted a little bit more often (1-2 months depending on growth and hair). For me though, I just want really low maintenance and something where I don't have to pay somebody else to maintain, so getting them for college will save you some $$$.

Sorry for jumping in and interrupting, but--I personally LOVE dreads and seeing all the pictures you've shown--gosh, I love them even more. But, since my folks think I'm too young to make my own decisions, they won't let me have 'em... To be completely honest, I can't really do anything with my hair… all I can do is braid it up. So, I make them as tiny as possible so I can fit one hundred on my head.

That second picture there is beautiful! I love her curly dreads. Yeah, I figured getting mine done for uni would be good, price wise.

I was considering dreads one day while my son was about two, a guy with short dreads walked past in the supermarket carpark and my son said "Look Mummy, that man's got sausages on his head". That was the end of the day dream. I think Carzeebear would be gorgeous with dreads cos she is always gorgeous to me. ;) I like really long thin dreads with beads on some of them. Not too Pirates of the Caribbean tho! :D

I knew you'd post here!

I love dreads. Did some when I was in high school on myself. My mom freaked out and I spent most of the day taking them out after I finished them. Yes, they can be taken out, it just takes forever to get the mats out. If taken care of dreads can be awesome. People that don't take care of them are those who give the false impression that dreads are "dirty" or "unsanitary".

I might travel all the way to Canada just to visit the knotty boy dread salon.

All Natural Dreadlocks Hair Products | Knotty Boy

There seriously needs to be more dread salons in places. The only thing I would be careful about is using wax (DONT DO IT!). Don't use anything that will cause huge build up issues. My sis has to cut some length off her dreads because of build up.

I'm thinking I might have my friend crochet mine if I have some money to pay her before she moves to Virginia. I wouldn't want her to put in all that time and effort for nothing.

You can start your dreads on your own. Plenty have done it. (sure it takes a bit longer, but its cheaper lol). Maybe your boyfriend could even help you, its not that hard. Are you going to use the neglect method and just wait on your hair to do it naturally? Or are you going to just make sections for your hair and dread that way?

I dreaded by just simply sectioning my hair and twisting two strands and not doing anything to it. This method works for me because i've got super curly hair. If your hair is straighter, the twists may fall out.

Neglect Method looks like this after awhile (its a bit messier, but I personally think it looks cool): This is my favorite pic to use because the little boy is so cute and his facial expression is priceless.

My hair is similar to this girls hair: Twisting it is a tad easier for me and I just wait for my roots to grow in before retightening them.

This one is just awesome ^__^

I think you missed it but I said I wanted to crochet mine. I like nice tight dreads and want to rounded tips. I'm against neglecting hair because it just looks gross. Why would I want to wait months for natural dreads when I can have my entire head done in maybe twelve hours and have them look infinitely better?

I want a few piercings. My nose, second holes, another cartilage piercing, and my nipples. Possibly tongue, lip, and eyebrow in the future.

As a child I once met a man who had dreadlocks and asked how he got his hair to be that way, he said he just didn't comb his hair for six years.....and I believed him at the time.

I personally am not too keen on dreadlocks, I have somewhat typical straight, to somewhat wavy hair so I don't think they'd suit me.

I used a combination of twist and back combing. Twisting fell out too easy so I had to backcomb it to get it to lock. Sadly, my dreads didn't get the chance to mature before I had to take them out. =/ I'm considering growing my hair out a bit more then doing it again. It took me forever to dread it though. I also thought about doing braid locks. I think those look neat too.

For the most part the ones I've seen look god awful in all stages of having them three exceptions being two women who had either wool or natural hair extentions dreaded into their hair, which they must have had done professionally and there's a guy who had really long dreads.

Credit to anyone who has dreads which haven't acoured naturally and takes great care of them to keep them looking pristine with using dread combs and flannel washing them.
