There's music like that in every generation. The reason why we remember bands such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and such today is because truly good music will stand the test of time. Every decade has had it's share of awful 'popular' music while the great stuff is few and far between. The Rolling Stones, CCR, and Steppenwolf, for example, were definitely not topping the music charts in the 60's. You know who was? The Archies. I bet you've never heard of them before; and that's just paramount to my point.

Other great bands that barely ever scored top hits in the billboard were pre-black-album Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Pantera, Diamond Head, The Cure, Iron Maiden, Rush, etc etc. We remember them as 'the greats' because the music was actually good. But back when those bands weren't considered 'godlike' and other stuff was making the top 10 [like A-ha], you had to really dig to find them. That's how it is now, as well. There's plenty of good music being made this generation, it just takes a lot of searching outside the Billboard Top 100.

If I must give examples; Coheed & Cambria [Pop-Prog], Anarchy Club [Hard Rock], X Japan [Power-Speed-Metal], Lake of Tears [Gothic Rock/Metal], Brand New [Alt Rock], Nujabes [Jazz/Hip-Hop Fusion], Alestorm [Pirate Metal], Beck [Alternative], Between The Buried And Me [Prog], Drudkh [Black Metal], E.S. Posthumous [Orchestral], Have A Nice Life [Black Shoegaze], Idaho [Slowcore], etc etc

I could ramble on but I think I've made my point enough.

Hmm.... do us a favor: Don't judge by the radio only when making these threads. Pop on the radio has, is, and always will be like that. It's just sung in a different way.

One thing I like about today's music is that you can find just about anything from any time this day and age, you just need to dig deep enough and know the right blogs/places. Before, you only had what you just happened to hear on TV, radio, a friend's CDs etc. While radio's always been truthfully degrading in a lot of ways (in some places it stays the same), outside of such has flourished. While it may not seem like it, we do have a lot of interesting items out there.

A good example of actual good things going on this year? Look up The Devin Townsend Project's double release, just came out.

Well, I do agree with you to some extent concerning most of the music that actually gets played on the radio, but in my opinion, there are actually a lot of great bands out there these days. Unfortunately, they're the ones that the majority of people have never heard of.

What kind of bothers me, though, is how much what actually gets played on the radio has changed just in the last decade or so. When I was younger, a lot of the popular songs these days would NEVER have been played on most of the stations that I hear them on now. I remember a few years ago when "California Girls" by Katy Perry first came out, and my friends and I were all somewhat shocked when they didn't beep out "sex" in the lyrics. Now you hear that kind of thing all the time - I actually heard Rihanna's "S and M" played on the radio on a station that, if I'm not mistaken, used to advertise as being a family station a few years ago. And it's not the songs themselves so much that bother me; it's the fact that so many elementary and middle school students are such big fans of those artists, and at least where I live, I've noticed that kind of media influences them A LOT. It's sad to me how much kids have changed, just in the time that's passed since I was that age.

But anyway, to be totally honest, I think part of the reason why only the more mindless music gets played on the radio is that the vast majority of people listening don't WANT the lyrics to actually make them think.

Many radio stations have gone far down hill and only carter to the masses. As such, they're hardly willing to give decent artists exposure unless a huge label is backing them. I really only listen to stations that play classic rock now because I can't stand most of what is out there.

However, like other users have said, there's plenty of good music out there to discover. Back when I was at school (here at home I have a shitty internet connection), I used to check this blog every day that was dedicated to review rock/metal/thrash and so on. I found a number of groups on there that I've grown to like quite a bit, one of them is playing right now - SKINMASK

While the internet has definitely produced a lot of shit, it also has the power to help you find some pretty incredible things. That's how I was exposed to a few of the bands that I've recently added to my library. And don't forget sites like last.fm or Pandora, it can be pretty nifty since those kinds of services suggest bands/artists similar to what you already listen to. Without them, I wouldn't have fallen in love with Winger or Danger Danger.

So really, it just takes some digging on your part. I really don't mind when people haven't heard of some of the groups I listen to. I think it's fun to spread things via word of mouth. My friends and I spend hours going through each other's music libraries looking for new shit to trade. Who needs Pokemon cards when you have music? ;)
