Oh, not that, dear. I mean.. which book, tutorial et cetera.
There is no art without the knowledge of anatomy, there are books on how to apply anatomy to drawing.
Good art ALWAYS takes forever and a day.
Well, they certainly are not kitchen utensils, while I would call them cartoonism, not art, they still belong in the group, even as simple things.
But splattering paint or drawing geometric shapes has been called art in the past century, so manga style is a step up from that.

Actually, not a whole lot of books at first. Kinda practiced from real life, and whatever I though from my imagination.
Later on, even though I looked at a lot of how-to-draw type books, I didn't quite study them. Only in the past 5 years (I think) did I start actually looking at anatomy. Even then, it was from certain tricks I learned about body proportions. Not necessarily books. Actually one of those tricks was from a kids TV show. XD
I've been finding a lot of good tutorials on DA, haven't used them much actually.
It's really just me looking at pictures of people and animals and seeing how stuff fits/works together.
I can see how that works.
Honesty, I never saw a point in the whole "Modern Art" thing. It's just weird.

Apologies for stumbling in in the middle of the conversation.
I just have to say that for the half year studying the history of art, I never quite get what they call modern art, either. De stijl boggles my mind. Pop art too, but that's slightly better.

@Iro: Yay! A fellow person who doesn't understand Modern art. :D
Course, now that I think about it, maybe it's more of a designing thing. *shrugs*
Kinda like "this room needs a painting, but that realistic flower vase is too busy. Oh look a drawing of lines. Perfect." XD
Just a theory.

Modern art is just an excuse to waste paint, then somehow people fall for it and call it "meaningful" or "deep", even "symbolic"
My ass!
There is no right or wrong way to learn art, as long as you learn it.

I don't know. Perhaps some of them do have a meaning to them, like calculated lines and the particular shade of colour... But still not my thing.
You could be guided on how to learn, though.
Before taking classes, I didn't know where to start, I have to say it has done me a lot of good. :)
And never under-estimate realism! Even if you claim to draw only a certain style of art, anatomy and life drawing are still things an artist have to know and understand. \o/

Realism is my favourite type of art. I only look at it on DeviantArt. Well, mostly, there is cute anime and other style art.
Anime style art is good to start off with. Sure, people like it a lot more than anything else, but why succumb to trends and be a glory whore, when you can be substantial and real in your craft?

@Iro: I'll never underestimate realism. It can also help a cartoony style seem more believable if used in a "right" way.
And that is why I have many different styles. Usually changes depending on what medium I'm using. :/
@Lavender: Well it is a tried and true method of drawing.

It's a matter of personal tastes sometimes.
I like realism, I like comic book art, I like manga (though on the styles it is debatable), I like 3D art (for games and animation).
Anime style art (more specifically, Naruto and the likes) is actually a terrible way to start off. Before I took the classes, I was stuck drawing in manga style because I didn't understand realism and was afraid to try them out. It took a while for me to break out of the style I had conditioned myself to, and I am still working on breaking off quirks I'm not happy with.
On the other hand, I can actually switch styles if I wish right now, I just don't draw as much realism as I do manga style, as I feel more at ease drawing the latter.
Not to say all anime style are bad, series like Slam Dunk have art in a mix of semi-realism and manga styled expressions. It was one of the books I loved reading while growing up. xD

It's funny cause I draw people in a manga style for the most part, but I draw animals in a realistic style. Even the imaginary kind of animals. I think it's cause I used to draw animals more often, so I'm more comfortable with more details on them. So to speak.
Anyways, I would love to keep chatting, but getting sleepy here, so it's off to bed for me. :)

You have to start somewhere, and people start with anime these days, them move on... Or not.
Realism is the way to go, but a good artist will not ever be limited to one style, one theme, one media, one tool or utensil.
A good artist is like the world; always changing, always evolving and coming up with new things, while not letting go of the old.
I know a lot about art in theory. I am a very new artist. Just a few paintings and a few digital doodles. I only claim to be good at theory, anyway. I do have a good eye, which I should use a lot more than I do. In practice, of course.
I saw some pretty damned amazing things in anime, and though "How the fuck did they manage to do that? This is animation, a page is not supposed to take more than 5 minutes."

Now that you mention it, I don't draw many animals. I think the only animals I could say I have an idea how to draw without reference are birds and dragons (which technically don't count).
Good night, white!
Hopefully more who move on than not. ;)
And that is very true. Part of art is also adaption, moving with the times. Something several teachers in the classes pound very hard into their students. Getting stuck in one way while giving you a recognisable 'style', stunts growth in a manner of speaking.
Good eye and good observation skills are very important. That was mainly what I was lacking, and fortunately, it could be trained.
Some anime are excellent, there is not arguing that. But when there is good, there are also the bad. I've seen my hair share of bad anime with the good, and sometimes what is popular can be terrible, but then again, that might be a matter of opinion.

Me too. I love yapping about art, but today I just feel fried... I cut roses and hunted clams, then slept for 10 hours.
It was so nice to not be attacked with "Anime art is the best, fuck your realism, blah, blah, blah" for a change.

Oh, wow. That sounds like an eventful day. Did you get many clams? :D
That can get slightly annoying, I admit. I try to avoid those kind of conversations. It can get very tiring trying to explain to them your point of view.

3, but one was the biggest oyster I had ever seen. Biggest. Oyster. Eveeeeeeeerrrrrr!
Rrrrrrr! Funny... I pronounce that as "Evah".
I just tell them to fuck off. I need not explain my point to those who deserve it not.

Anime/manga art will never impress me. It's too stylized and simple. If something's not detailed and you can't feel the movement or life in it, then I don't care. I much prefer modern comic artists.
