in october and early november, the wind was like that here. it's lessened some. at least it doesn't downright howl and make the lids on the dumpster across the street flap like paper.
flood watch sounds unpleasant.

Meh, we doubt it will actually flood though... It isn't high enough and it is not raining hard enough to warrant it coming up. But we'll see.

It's flooded once before, it's really not as big a deal - as it isn't a fast moving part that will come into the yard - it's of the river's eddys so it is slow and all of that. WE do get a lot of drift wood if the water does come in. *shrug* :P

Not really - it's only in the back yard and just part of the front yard, we can still get in and out of the drive way. Honestly, it's not quite as bad as some think, at least here. *shrug*

Most of the roads here are up away from the river - at least the big major ones at least. We know not to have any major roads down right by the water - that'd not be smart - we live right on the banks of the So. Fork of the American river in Northern California - it's not a tiny little thing, it's a fairly decent sized river.

I don't really consider it flooding if the water doesn't get in the way of something. in a house, over roads, covering fields.

It was all round out house, flooded everything but out house cause we were on a little hill. We needed a boat to get in and out. Our horses were not happy.

well, that can be an upside. depends on how old you are. when you're older, you realize you will just have to make the time up in a less opportune time.

I was in high school and I think that we didn't have to make it up, they just took some of our teacher work days. So, it was no loss. I mean I'd rather have the time all together and spread out like once a month anyway.

you didn't have to make it up?! whenever school has missed more than a day or two, it's always made up. like when hurricane Ike came though. we shortened a holiday break and had to stay a few extra days into summer or something. I don't actually remember.

No we didn't make it up. Like I said, the teacher work days were just taken in replacement of it. Teacher work days are there incase of a make-up day needed. I think. But yea. It wasn't bad. But it was North Carolina and they aren't so great when it comes to education, usually. Not for public schools anyway. Extra days in the summer!? >.> no. That stinks they took all those days from you.

we missed two or so weeks because of that hurricane though because it took them so long to get power in the school.

Holy cow :O I don't think it took so long. I remember there was this one school I was at where they had to close it down for like 6 weeks for some reason, so we had to go to a different school and use their basement. That was the 5th grade, when I found out that my vision wasn't perfect. But I forget why they had closed it...
2 weeks.. pfft.. sounds like it was their fault though >.> I say no make ups if it's the fault of the school

it wasn't the school's fault. we had to take time off school to get ready for the hurricane, then during it and then most of the city was powerless and it took a while to get everything back up. my school was one of the last to get power back and they didn't want to start school when a lot of homes didn't have power either.
I think it would be fun to have school in the basement of another school.

Wow, where was that? Seemes like it took a really long time. That wasn't in Texas was it? It kinda seems like Texas can't absorb much rain or water when it comes that way, so I can see why it would have flooded so much :/
It was interesting. Sometimes loud, cause it was like a single room classroom, except there were a lot of classes down there. We all had our own little part of the basement separated by chalkboards and stuff. It was a lot cleaner than you might have imagined. And large.

I see that you are all talking about extreme weather...and the unfortunate consequences of it.
Using another school's basement for classes does sounds interesting.
