I can't be the only one who obsessively plays games until I have the achievements. Right?

So do you aim for achievements? And what's your favourite achievement so far?

My favourite is from mass effect two. "Shoot twenty enemies dead while they are knocked back by a punch." I got it eventually, by getting my shotgun out, punching husks, and then shooting their heads off. It was a lot of fun, possibly the most fun achievement I've ever had.

I find achievements to be completely pointless, honestly.

They garner me absolutely nothing other than a little icon appearing in some menus for my XBOX live account. Big whoop de do. Now, if I could use them to buy avatar clothes, that would be awesome. Or if I could use them to buy episodes of TV shows or downloadable content. But no. They just sit there and do absolutely nothing. Hence, pointless.

There are some other slightly meaner things I could say about the nature of the achievement gimmick, but I think I'll save it. :XD I don't really mean to offend anybody, and I know if I rant on it, I probably will step on someone's toes.

Achievements are an important part of video games for me. I'll easily lose track of time trying to get an achievement, and before I notice, I'm 80 hours into the game. I love them.

@starlock I don't use xbox live, so I find that it's achievements, rather than high scores or whatever that drive me in games.

I don't think I understand why one would need what is a gimmick to me to want to play a game, I guess. I play a game because I like the game. That, and the very idea of "accomplishments" in video games is something I find a little.... well... yeeeaaaah. I'm just going to say it. Don't eat me. >_<

I see these "accomplishments" as a measure of something of the following: 1) the degree to which they are suffering from addiction to video games, 2) the degree to which they actually have a life outside of video games, 3) the degree to which they exhibit obsessive behavior, and 4) the degree to which they seek a false sense of accomplishment as a substitute for more meaningful accomplishments in life. When I see really high gamerscores on XBOX live, I see them as badges of shame. It screams to me "I'm a video game addict and I have virtually no life." :XD

Then there's the manipulative aspect of achievements that bothers me. It's a way of controlling your behavior; a very simple reward scheme that works incredibly well to condition people. It's a way of enticing you to become one of those video game addicts with virtually no life, or at the very least playing the game even if it's not that great or you really ought to be doing other things with your time. 'Tis particularly sinister for young people, who have poor impulse control in general. It worries me.

I really wish I could disable them. These sorts of conditioned responses are powerful, and I know that I've been manipulated by them as much as anyone else. My gamerscore isn't that high, but I still find it shameful. >_<

That's an interesting way of looking at it. I don't play many video games, only one or two really. So I would certainly not say that I spend all my time on my xbox. but I find achievements fun to unlock, as something to do when you're trying to get that fourth alternate ending, or whatever.

I'm pretty middle ground when it comes to achievements.
I don't really try for them but when I get them I do think "Oh! Cool!"

The achievements in Batman Arkham Asylum especially
because I tend to suck at games like that so... I guess
getting achievements makes me think I suck less.

I will say they seem overly generous with achievements in Civilization: Revolution
it's like "you've completed step one" have an achievement
or "you formed an army" have an achievement.

There's no effort required in doing these things.

The freaking tutorial is still on the screen and you've given me three or four achievements!

Personally, I find achievements a way to brag to your friends that you were able to do something in a game that they couldnt. And for me, 90% of the achievements that I get, I get just by playing through the game once. Some of them, it might take me a few tries, but heck, its a way to challenge my friends to a competition.

Like with Black Ops when it first came out, the 4 of us decided to play through it on Veteran, not changing the difficulty, and seeing who could get through it the fastest, with the fewest deaths. Showing who got certain achievements by a certain time, that was a way to figure out who truly did it. Was a fun time.

I can also see your point, Starlock. About how they are pointless. Just, to me its a good way of challenging my friends to competitions, or to be better at a game than each other.

I thought this thread was going to be about the Achievement Unlocked game, has anyone played it? ;_; It's brilliant...
For me it depends, really. I don't really try to get the achievements unless it's something that doesn't require much effort, then I would probably try to get them just for the shiny. The only games in which I unlocked all achievements were Achievement Unlocked and Achievement Unlocked 2 though, for obvious reasons.

Yeah, I'm glad people aren't too upset by what I said.
I guess I am also not a competitive person. I don't feel I have anything to "prove" to people and nothing to "win" that is of value, and thus tend to give people quizzical looks when they want to get involved in proverbial penis-size contests.

I do that too! I love getting the achievements, so much! <3 I don't really know what my favourite one would be, but nothing can compete with the amazing feeling I got after I unlocked the 'Story Complete' one from GTA IV. xD

I never really said what my favorite achievement was, but I guess it would have to be a tie between: Quiet on the Set(kill George Romaro in Call of the Dead zombie map on Black Ops) and The Collector(buy every weapon off the walls in a single zombies game - also on Black Ops). Those were the most fun, and annoying, ones Ive had to do.
