Lol, I just realized that.

I really guess the question is the defense being felled or the self-inflicted damage. The PP isn't a big deal. That can easily be increased with items...but the damage...Bird pokemon are naturally less hardy, their defense is already pretty piss poor.
I'm thinking I should go with Brave Bird.
Staraptor would really feel a continued loss of defense.

oh yeah! My dilemma was making my pokemon too basic. Close combat is a fighting type move, but brave bird is a flying type...
I need to relook at the game's elite four.

oh yeah... that may be a good idea... but i always found a bird time to be useful for fly at the very least. xD

Yeah, i love bird types. Even though their defense is a little lacking, they're quick and they pack a punch.

Alright, the team I was putting together is making more sense to me now. The first one has bug types, some pure some combo. But fire is essential. The next person is ground/water types. I choose a grass starter, so that base = covered.

You can always level up a dragon, or an electrical.

oh, and for ground I've been using Geodude, with brick break(name?) or rock smash...

uh some fighting move that can be taught with a Tm

I've been reading through bulbapedia, and the pokeverse is filled with plenty of crappy/absentee parents.
How do Flint & Lola (Brock's parents) decide to pop out 8 kids, all very close together in age, and then run off and leave them with one of their other children?
Not to mention Ash's dad. Knocks up his mom, but it's okay 'cause he has his own journey. Why have kids only to abandon them? I don't get it? It's called a condom and some birth control....
