I have a vlog that I update sporadically on Youtube.
I use Corel Video Studio Pro X4 editing software. It works amazingly well; I have no complaints. However, if you don't want to spend any money, Windows Live Movie Maker isn't as awful as everyone makes it out to be. I got by with it for a long time. It isn't fantastic, and it lacks a lot of ideal features, but it's good enough to use, especially starting out. :]
As far as cameras...I'm not sure. I have a Kodak Zi8 which I've always used for most of my filming. However, the LCD screen on it broke last week. I have a new camera, a Sanyo Xacti, but I haven't used it much yet. I like both cameras a lot, however!
If you want a pocket camera, I strongly recommend the Kodak Zi8. It can film in 5 different resolutions (including three HD settings), it's comfortable to hold and use, and software that comes with it (which you install onto your computer by connecting the camera to it) is easy and fluid to use.
