So as I was flossing my teeth tonight, I noticed what looks like cavities in between my two front teeth. It's been probably over three years since i've seen a dentist, and i still had like four cavities to be filled. i didn't go back because it was costing too much for my dad.

I told hubby what I found and he seems worried, but is more worried about spending money. He says my teeth are more important and I suggested going to a dentist to see what they say and how much it would cost. He got upset with me. I'm just afraid if i wait any longer i'm going to end up losing all my teeth.

What should I do? We don't have insurance and the state won't cover me because "we make too much" which is a total lie. I'm pretty freaked out and scared right now.

EDIT- Getting my teeth filled today, hopefully I do ok, and they are nice about it. Thanks for everyone's help!

You should see a dentist for that, even if it costs a chunk of money. Maybe you can start a savings account and go about it little by little, so if its expensive, the hit won't be that bad. Personally, I think you shouldn't stress too much about it, but definitely see a doctor. =3

They should be able to make a payment plan for me right? I'm still scared and upset about it. I don't want to be like my grandma and have false teeth already. I'm only 24! She was about this young when she got her teeth pulled...

The state says I "make too much" to be covered too and I work a minimum wage job. Pretty much if ya don't have a kid they say no. Anyway, I would try to see a dentist. Most doctors won't see anyone without insurance so hopefully you can find someone that will.

I have two boys. they still won't cover me. something seriously needs to be done with our health care system, just not what Obama wants to do.

Maybe i can talk to my parents tomorrow and see what they think. i'm just really worried about it now, so much i'm gonna make myself sick probably.

Really? That's kind of surprising. My opinion is that no one should go without health care because it's kind of needed, especially with chronic illness. Plus preventive care cost less than fixing a problem later down the road.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as it's taken care of soon it shouldn't be a problem. I have a weird fear of loosing my teeth too so I know what you mean by that.

i know.

that's the thing though. it probably won't get taken care of soon. i feel like we have the money but he's so bent on saving it and gets upset every time i mention the word "doctor". we have like over 4,000 dollars in a joint checking account...

Teeth are worth the investment I believe, you only get one set of adult teeth.

If you don't have the money now, the most you can do in the meantime is constantly keep them clean to slow the cavities' widening. I hope you get the money to have them fixed.

I have a tooth that has rotted in half due to cavities and the awkward alignment of my teeth. I need to see an oral surgeon to have the tooth extracted, but they won't accept my insurance, so I am currently saving up for that. Thankfully it hasn't started to hurt yet (the damage has so far miraculously missed the nerve), but I am sure it will.

Whatever plan you take with all the suggestions already posted, it's probably cheaper in the long run to get it now even if you have to scrimp in other areas for now.

Pa-chinko is right. Trust me, ya don't want to pay for root canals. That put my family into debt for a year, and my mom only had one.

Yikes.

Well i got an appointment made the earliest they could see me is the 25th. but i'm only going for a cleaning and do xrays so they can see how many need filled. sounds like it's gonna be a long drawn out thing. ugh. i don't mind but just don't want to listen to hubby complain.

I am still getting work done on my teeth 4 years later after some major teeth problems. that said, there have been gaps of about a year between each cluster of appointments. :/ And there's always more work to be done but no time.

Get care asap, cavities breed more cavities (or so I've been told).

thank you monstahh  i'll try to get it all taken care of!

my father in law brought up a low income place that does has dentists there. should i trust it? or just keep my appointment here in town? if i went to the low income place he'd have to take me and the boys to a city an hour away and find something to do with the boys while i'm at the dentist. what if they want to do a consult first, i don't wanna make several trips up there. would be easier to get it done at home i think.

Get it done closer and find a good dentist. Oral care is not really something you want to skimp on. I went to the cheapo dentist a couple towns away for a while.
Until their root canal "specialist" left a large amount of cotton and a broken screw in a root canal he did while talking on the phone. My tooth rotted away from the inside and I needed surgery and a piece of my jaw removed.

I also had to get EVERY SINGLE CAVITY FILLING (x15) they did replaced because they kept falling out (even though I followed the slip of paper the gave me about "care" EXACTLY!!!) I also later found out from the guy who did my braces, that a lot of the "fillings" I got...were not done over cavities at all, but healthy tooth to make a buck. :)

So look up reviews for the doctors, at least!

oh my goodness! i'm so sorry that happened to you! :(

i've decided to just get it done here in town, will be easier for everyone all around and i'm sure by them wanting to do xrays first, they will take good care of me. i sure hope so.
