I've been good. Busy, but good. Finished my first year of college, currently taking summer classes and working full time, planning my birthday party for the end of the month. Lots of stuff going on!

I work for the Restaurant/Gift Shop/Bistro LLC in my city's regional airport as a senior general sales associate. The owner's wife basically calls me the boss of the gift shop though, since that has been my permanent station since the second week I was there. I keep track of all of the stock and count inventory and inform my bosses when inventory is running low. I also count and inspect of the gift shop inventory as it comes in, set up displays and keep the place organized in general. On top of that I also help out in the Restaurant when the gift shop is slow and/or they get slammed and need the extra hands. I am about the be retrained at the bistro to take a shift up there once a week just to get me out of the gift shop every now and then because, quite frankly, it gets very boring in there. That and we need someone cross trained because we currently are short on staff and people keep going on vacation and calling in lately.

School is going great. I am in my junior and senior level courses now, so no more boring core!! I have a year to a year and a half left to go, depending on if I take next summer off as well. I took this one off because I really needed the vacation from something, and I kind of needed my job and well, you can't just ignore family issues.

What are you majoring in? And what do you think of college thus far?

Well, like you said, the core classes are definitely boring. I'm a double major in English Literature and Film/Media Studies. It's my goal to be an editor at a publishing house by the time I'm 30. So I figure that gives me around 5 years after I graduate to reach my goal. I'm planning on trying out for an internship while I'm doing my study abroad in England during my junior year if I can, and finding whatever I can here at home to gain some experience so I don't come out of college green with a shiny new degree and no prior knowledge of the business.

And that's cool about being so cross-trained at your job. I'm still working at the gas station. Or rather, I got my job back at the gas station since I've moved home and will be living with my parents and commuting to school instead of having to live on campus. I think I'm going to miss being on campus more often, but I don't really have much choice in the matter. I need to work full time to afford my England trip.

I was hoping that was the case ^.^

Pap, agreed. I don't care where you are or what job you have, you should be trained on how to do everything regardless of your position.

I've basically learned you don't turn down an opportunity when it's offered to you. Even if it's not something you do, it looks good later that you've done it.

Example- At my old job I never turned down learning other things. I knew how to do more then 90% of the managers....and certainly more then the store manager. All the managers knew I knew how to do it all.....and expected me to do it all.

Typical day.

Manager 1: I need you to do A, B and C
Manager 2: No no no....ignore that this is more important. Do D, E, and F.
Manager 1: Why aren't you doing what I told you to do.
Manager 3(Who also happens to be my direct manager): Why are you working in other departments? Go do G, H, I, and J before the end of the day.
Managers 1 and 2: This really needs to get done today.
Manager 4(Store Manager): Furnature looks like shit. Go find someone else.....pull all the furnature off the shelves and reorganize.

A typical day at Wal-mart was like a zoo. Nothing ever got done because I knew how to do almost everything.

Ah well, that's just poor management. XD
