It seems that whenever I want to double post (to set something up) it just puts it into an edit on the first post. Is this fixable, or am I doomed?

I believe that double posting is againt the rules

that is why it puts it in your last post so that you might add something you forgot but not be double posting.

Double posting isn't allowed, which is why the system auto-merges your posts :)

read the FAQ jelly linked you. reserving posts is done for aesthetic reasons/making sections when setting up a thread. you can't double post in normal circumstances, but for that purpose, you can. it's a check box you have to check in the "Go Advanced" reply view at the bottom.
