"I'm a big girl, you know," Elaine teased Steve as she got closer to him. "Can still tie my own shoes and everything."

"What?" Steve blinked, not sure what she was referring to. Of course he knew she could tie her own shoes. Then it occured to him, and he blushed faintly. "Oh. It's just habit." He opened the car door for her too, having borrowed one of Tony's. Since he figured she might not take a ride on a motorcycle so well.

"I know," Elaine replied. She smiled. "It's sweet." She swept her cane around habitually until she found the car, and she slid into the passenger seat.

Steve just nodded and got in the driver's seat.

"Do you need anything before we go or are you ready?"

"I'm fine," Elaine said as she strapped in. "Whenever you're ready to go."

Steve nodded and started driving. He was half-way hoping the gods would just show up so they could get everything over with, but he also didn't like to put Elaine in the way of danger.

"Hopefully you'll be able to go home soon."

"Until then, I don't mind spending time out," Elaine said as she settled into her seat. Absently, she trailed her fingers along the seams in the leather.

"Would you like some coffee?" Steve asked as he pulled over into the nearest parking lot to the park. "There's a little place along here that sells good coffee."

"That sounds good," Elaine said. She grinned. "Although I do take my coffee a little more complicated than you take yours," she teased.

Steve actually chuckled quietly. "I'm sure I can remember it," he said with a little smile, getting out and opening her door for her again so they could find a spot to sit and wait.

Elaine got out of the car and waited until she could hear his footsteps before following. She almost walked into the chair before she found it, and sat down carefully.

Steve looked at her for a moment before he nodded. "What would you like to drink?" He figured he may as well go get their coffee so she could have a few moments to settle in.

Elaine grinned a bit.

"Listen close," she teased. "Caramel latte, whole milk, no whipped cream."

"Alright. I'll be back." Steve watched her for another moment before he left to go get their drinks.

It took him a few minutes to get back, and then he sat next to her. "Here, hold out your hand. I got your drink."

Elaine complied and held out her hand, waiting for the cup to be put into her hand. She closed her fingers around it gently when she felt it, and brushed a finger around the rim to find the opening in the lid.

"Thanks," she said, settling into her chair.

"No problem." Steve settled in next to her after a moment with his own normal black coffee. "You comfortable?"

"I'm fine," Elaine said. She smiled a bit. "The only think wrong with me is that I can't see. I'm fine otherwise." She stretched a little. "I used to be able to see."

"Did you?" Steve blinked. "What happened?" He settled in next to her, figuring they'd be there for a while. And he didn't mind listening to her talk.

"I was about twelve or so," Elaine said, relaxing slightly when he sat next to her. "There was a fire. It was the middle of the night, and I was following my parents and brother to get out of the house. The fire must have hit the gas line for the house, because it went up, and the light was just so bright... The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital. Well, sort of. By that point, I couldn't see any more. They told me I hit my head, and a combination of that, the explosion, and the smoke were what did it. I haven't been able to see since."

"Well enough," Elaine said. "I remember what some things look like. The sky, the grass..." She grinned a bit. "That old-fashioned stars-and-stripes uniform."

"My grandfather," Elaine replied with a little grin. "He was raised on all of the old TV shows, and he let my dad watch them, and then my brother and I. I still remember most of them. It was all in black and white, but still."

"Ah." Steve smiled a little. "I remember when they were making those reels. There was one cameraman in particular I liked. He had a good sense of humor and didn't think I was just the uniform." He shrugged.

"It's all kind of fuzzy," Elaine admitted. "I remember general things, but the fine details are gone. It's just been too long since I was able to watch the reels."
