i put together a cheap sub $300 budget pc that i plan to use as a gateway/captive portal server. biggest thing was i needed something with 2 lan ports or 2 nics...

best gaming laptops are between asus, msi, and sager(not very well known yet)

otherwise, if all you plan to do is light stuff like web browse, watch movies or listen to music any cheap ol thing under $500 will do....

Oh, well then you just need a basic laptop *nods* I have an older hp g60 that I use for internet browsing. It's pretty decent. The best thing for internet browsing is to upgrade a laptop that has sata 2 or sata 3 to an SSD, since it makes processing everthing SUPER fast *nods*

Depending on where you live, there are some good places to actually buy laptops from. On the east coast in the usa there are Microcenter stores that carry new laptops at great deals. That's where we go shopping for costumers.

Goodie~
Like this, I am playing Sims 3.
Anyway, so although my spec is up to standard... IT STILL LAGS!
I check the Sims 3 websites and wikis and things. Other than files, they also mention hardware upgrades.
So, if I want to upgrade my nVidea to more memory 'just' for the graphic card for desktop, how much do you think 3D games required? the memory.
oh and, my HP recently did a health test for hardware, so it seems that one SATA hard disk was mark with a bright red X... now computer still usable, should I change the hard disk?

Very technical?

Here is a all-around decent laptop from microcenter Micro Center - Computers, Electronics, Computer Parts, Networking, Gaming, Software, and more!

And you can purchase SSD's on eBay, but they aren't the best deal. I got a 60gb SSD from microcenter on sale for $15, but now its back to $45... also, it is a "new" technology so prices are kind of high for the room you get (a 500gb hard drive is about $50 in comparison..)

xuvrette: Hmm. Well there are pretty decent video cards that will run sims 3 just fine. When hard drives start to go bad, you could risk losing most or all of your data. That's why SSD's are so cool, they are Solid State Drives so they are practically indestructible. You may want to get a new hard drive soon and put your data on it... Sims 3 runs best on at least 1.5gb ram, or it will lag from stealing all the RAM.. I'm not sure what your desktop has already, so i can't really suggest anything

*dorks*

Oh yeah, the myth about RAM.
and can Invictus also explain on MAC? XD
I am interested in why is MAC so easy to use compare to PC as claimed by people.

*guesses* malaysia or singapore...

what kind of laptop/desktop are you using now? sometimes upgrading just isn't possible due to hardware restrictions...

usually if you want to play games, it boils down to your video card. of course i'm not saying processor and ram doesn't play a factor, but most laptops come with integrated graphics which is not very good for gaming.

Also, my personal opinion.... i think SSD is over rated. People get them to boot their computer faster and load games faster. (obviously from a gamer's perspective..) other than that, it's just over priced and a waste of money... wait until 1gb of ssd is under $.50-75 cents.

If you want a good hardy laptop. Thinkpad from Lenovo is great. They are pricey but.. they'll last forever. They have a vast range of whatever the consumer would want for a specific laptop. The only reason I chose this kind is that my sister is a programmer, so I trust her intellect.

agree with you there on the SSD, Lost. I got mine at a great deal (60gb for $15) wouldn't pay more than that though.

For sims 3 though, the most important things are RAM and processor. I had a high end video card just for sims 3 but then decided to upgrade my processor to an amd x6 and it was much better. It didn't lag or take forever to load, so it really does matter. (Yours might be lagging because your hard drive is going bad though, slight possibility there xuvrette)

*gasped at LOST* You have friends there? O__O

I am using currently HP p6451d PC... Intel Core 2 Quard Processor, 4 gig ram, nVidia GT120... last I check I think nVidia GT120 do NOT have separate memory support...
I already have external hard disk to store all my programmes and things. Never save files in PC anymore... just some torrents...*ninja*
SSD? What was the full name for it? If you know?

Heh, you play Sims 3 too? XD
You mean processor as in... for intel would be the i-series? How much ram you have?
I suspect my lag was cause MOSTLy due to my custom contents.

Well, no I think your processor and ram should be plenty for something like sims 3... Do you store sims 3 on the external hard drive though? That might cause lag...

SSD is a Solid State Drive, its rather expensive technology right now, but it is pretty safe-proof for data and speed.

you mean, as in not a netbook? I think the only thing that defers them right now is whether not they have a "full" keyboard or if they have disk drives. I think the smallest "notebook" is a 13.3"

i agree with invictus, if hard drive is failing it could deteriorate performance on read/write speeds or ran on an external hard drive it can affect the game...

do you do home user support invictus? i did home user support/small-medium business consulting in california

xuvrette, no... i was just guessing... i'm planning on backpacking through southeast asia next year around march....i asked iroase on advice on where i should visit in malaysia....

Lol, my definition of Laptop is the processor. The ones using the atom thingy... mostly found in the so call netbooks ones, are NOT laptop. Not really sure about notebook, I thought it is a model name, not a type name. XD But yeah, those use 'standard' processor ones I define as laptop.

I install programmes straight in CPU's hard disk, it is Samsung SATA. it actually was replaced one month after I bought it, due to some hardware malfunction... around 3 years ago...
