I just saw this on Pinterest, and had to make a thread about it, because it's so to me!

Wild Edible … Flavor Paper? 0-Calorie, Fat-Free ‘Slim Chips’ | Designs & Ideas on Dornob

On the surface, this seems semi ok. If you're just looking to break your fatty snacking habits by eating something with no nutritional value. But they're full of artificial who-knows-what, the colour of them alone...

And you know the first thing that sprang to my mind? People with eating disorders, and media influences teens (often the same people)...who would eat these instead of eating actual food, and potentially end up seriously sick from malnutrition. Some could even die as they'd be starving themselves whilst still eating.

Do you think the manufacturers have even considered this? Maybe they just thought it was a fun concept, but I'm pretty horrified by the thought of this product

The fact that they're called "Slim Chips" bothers me! As though people have to take in 0 calories in order to get thin.

I've got a lot of problems with the health and food industry, especially when it comes to advertisements, so I just have to shake my head at this one. The only positive side is that I'm willing to bet that eating this paper isn't satisfying. At all. Which means that it won't be the kind of food you crave and really want to continue eating.

Are these for real? Something about the ad looks mock to me. That's just ridiculous.
BTW the fact that some of the bags in the pictures say 'ALMOST no calories' while the headline of the article says '0-calories' is really trustworthy. XP Kind of like canned Minute Maid lemonade lol. It says on the front of the can 'Made with real lemons' but in the ingredients section it says concentrate.

What's the point of eating this stuff? Lol... Think it's just lying to yourself thinking that its much healthier... Reminds me of myself when I drink diet coke instead of regular coke. I do wonder how the stuff tastes like though. I can imagine it tasting like sawdust... Even with the same texture... Lol

Not very health if you ask me. Great marketing ploy to people who don't know better though. I really hope this isn't a real thing because 0 calories isn't the way to go and you know someone will starve themselves on those.

I rather eat my dehydrated veggie chips and be happy with the calories.

Doesn't look healthy to me at all. I cringe just seeing the colors...so much artificial coloring that it can't possibly be healthy. The words 'unusually vibrant colors' is a huge turnoff for me. Why not just eat vegetables if one wants to be healthy?

The start of the description is unsettling too. 'Instead of getting fat'. Which implies that if you eat food with calories, you will be fat. Completely miseducating people about how our bodies work and what they need to do to look a certain way. Telling people to eat nothing versus getting fat. No wonder there are so many people are suffering from eating disorders, when we have this kind of advertising all around us. Except this is putting it plain and simply, a harsh jab at anyone and everyone.

It's awful, isn't it :( Reminds me of a programme that I saw on anorexic girls in this home/clinic. Seems it's a common practice for people with/who end up with anorexia to eat Kleenex. Because it fills their stomach but has no calories. This stuff is no different to that

People focus way too much on calories, and entirely forget that they NEED nutrients to live ._.

Same as they focus entirely on their weight, and don't actually KNOW what damage they are doing to their bones and enternal organs (including their heart) by starving themselves.

It scares the hell out of me that people don't seem to realise that your body basically consumes itself when it's not given enough food. Of course if uses up fat reserves first; but it then moves onto muscle when all the fat is gone, and bone density diminishes too, and teeth get weak. People are destroying their bodies and setting themselves up for massive health problems in not much later life, if they stay alive...

Just the thought of starving yourself so much that your body starts using your heart muscle for fuel... *shudders*

@Pa-Pancake You know I have heard that diet soda actually has MORE sugar than regular.

@lunanouva Yes that's an excellent point. Very immature description; that's kind of like making fun of the chubby kid eating the candy bar which is one reason I wonder if this is real.

Diet soda has no sugar in it. Reason why diabetics and people with blood sugar problems can drink it.

Well... I was honestly more grossed out by the concept of blueberry chips than anything else, at least initially. Ew.

I wonder if they're actually filling at all. As in, I wonder if living off of them would make you feel full enough to be content and not feel any less starved than you would if you just didn't eat anything. They would be something I'd buy just to see what it was like. I feel like everyone is aiming for zero calories these days instead of just enjoying food. FOOD IS GOOD, EAT IT.

Horrifies me too, and I'm from the country where it's estimated that 1 in 3 people will have type-2 diabetes by 2050.

Calories are not the be-all and end-all indicator of how healthy a food is and less is not more. Fun fact that most people don't know - a calorie is a unit of energy. Specifically, enough energy to heat 1 ML of water to the boiling point. Energy and raw materials for sustaining our bodies are what we eat food for. Fat builds on our bodies to store excess energy - it's actually on your side! Those raw materials, though? Any excess of those goes down the toilet. Literally. And some of them inherently have more energy than our bodies require to extract them. That's life. And we have evolved over millions of years to have this particular balance in our digestive systems. For now, it's working exactly as it's supposed to, though maybe some day in the future we'll evolve further to be healthier on the diets available to us. Though honestly, I hope not - I hope instead that, at least here in the US, someone steps in and goes "Hmm, maybe we should fix this situation where a fresh vegetable is a luxury and the cheapest things to eat have more calories and fat in one meal than the average person should take in in a whole day!"

Calories aren't the enemy. Imbalanced diets are. I've got a bottomless stomach and I'm still visibly in good shape! Because most of what I eat is vegetables and fruit, there's some grain, very rarely there are certain kinds of shellfish, and on occasions I'll treat myself to something sugary and fatty and would be terrible for me if I made a habit of it but I don't (even if I talk about it a lot ). I'm lucky enough to be able to afford this though. I don't know that I always will be, and that's just sad.

But you can bet your ass that I am never going to make up for it by using this garbage. Being fat is a symptom of a form of malnutrition (specifically, overabundance of food with low nutrient density). Using another form of malnutrition to counter it is meaningless. I might LOOK "better" but I'll feel worse.

And then of course there is, as you mentioned, the issue of encouraging disordered eating. This stuff might fill your stomach but it's not going to keep you from getting horribly sick from lack of energy and raw materials to maintain your body. When you're hungry, it's because your body wants something. Giving it a big box of nothing might trick it, but it doesn't make you healthy.

Thin is not necessarily healthier than fat. Nor is it necessarily more attractive in my honest opinion.

I'll admit, I drink diet sodas sometimes just because I want the taste without the excess sugar...but I don't do it very often because good god the weird chemicals what are they doing? It's probably worse for me than this stuff actually...but it's in moderation and at least it tastes like something other than paper.

Of course, I'm sure this rant isn't going to convince someone from here, the land of McDonald's $1, 2500-calorie burgers and magazines telling women IF YOU'RE BIGGER THAN A SIZE 0 YOU'RE WORTHLESS ESPECIALLY IF IT'S JUST BECAUSE YOUR BONE STRUCTURE ISN'T NATURALLY TINY EW GET OUT UGLY LADY and even delivering some messages along those lines to men as well (even if it's by accident since we're valid citizens and actually worth more than our looks unlike those weird things that adorn car ads they're called women right?), that something like this is anything but a good thing. Sickens me, really.

...can you tell I want to live somewhere else?

I agree with everyone here saying that the calorie free snacks are not the right way to improve someone's lifestyle and eating habits. Fruits, vegetables, protein, and exercise are the key factors in trimming off weight and maintaining a healthy body.

oO Can it be zero calorie?

People seem to forget nutritional value. I've been doing a lot of work with health professionals and it seems the most important thing right now is using that nutritional pyramid within proper portions.

These are really dangerous though if people were to neglect eating properly.

While recognizing the points that others have made in this thread as very legitimate, both questioning of it's nutritional credibility and existence, I feel quite tempted to try them. The flavours look quite appealing and unlike other members, I think the colours look delicious.

That is awful, I have never heard of people eating Kleenex! I don't know how you can actually swallow something like that. I would choke!
I completely agree. I cringe when people go on about weight, because somehow they think that their weight = how much fat they have, and not the fact that we also have bones and organs etc. Somehow I think people have forgotten to eat for a balanced diet and nutrients. It quite annoys me when people go on saying 'I can't eat cake because it is unhealthy'. No, if you're eating a balanced diet with reasonable sized portions, it is not bad for you.

The fact that your body starts to feed off anything it can when not given food just shows how incredibly dangerous eating disorders are and should be taken seriously. (TV shows and the like can make jokes out of them which is quite sickening)

Yes! Almost comical. It could be a mockery, or a silly idea that someone had created because they actually believe those things and use that language.

Agreed. They are worse than real sugar but it's the only soda that I can drink even though I don't drink soda all too often any more.

This makes me think I should patent and sell my brain child... edible glitter.

Your kids don't like normal veggies? BAM! Glitter veg to the rescue. OMG MOM FABULOUS!

Personally, if I feel like snaking I normally just use smaller portions of every thing else that day. Normally what I crave is Chocolate with some kind of nuts. My favorites are Resins, Marzipan, anything hazel nut or recess peanut butter cups. Resins, in particular are a good choice for me. They take a long time to chew and satisfy the sweet craving and are only 40 cals each. If you don't have discipline that might make you eat more of them, but it's easy for me to just take one and then put them back in the cupboard.

And unfortunately unless you make all your own food these days you are getting some sort of artificial sugars. Corn syrup is in freakin' EVERYTHING! It really sucks.

People need an analogy to understand what a calorie does.

They should think of themselves as cars, and calories as petrol. No calories, body no worky

The only reason people obsess about calories is because they're the easy thing to focus on. The fact that the lazy processed "western" diet is crap and makes people fat; combined with how sedentary/lazy most people are now, is something most people seem to ignore : /
