Rachel had seen it as well, and nearly fell over herself as she jumped backwards.

"And now we know why the island is uncharted," she said, eyes wide. "Jesus, why didn't we think of mermaids before now?"

"Probably because we both still have faulty memories and there aren't supposed to be mermaids here." Tina watched two mermaids flip around in the water, one of them shredding a board that was floating until it was no longer recognizable.

"Doesn't matter," Rachel said, "we should have thought of mermaids. Seriously, we're in magic-fairytale-world. Ergo, mermaids." She flinched slightly when a lone board was cracked in half with a flip of a tail.

"Yeah, well, too late now." Tina sighed. "We'd better go find a decent place to spend the night."

Rachel nodded and hurried away from the shore. She didn't want to be within grabbing distance.

It took most of the rest of the afternoon, but Tina found them good fruits and a nice little cave away from the water. She was still working on how they'd get off the island, though.

Rachel, on the other hand, was going through her (admittedly limited) knowledge of magic, trying to think of any way to get them off the island. She sighed.

"I feel like I should know how to get us back to solid land again," she said. "I know I should know. But I just don't remember."

"Don't worry about it." Tina stretched briefly. "Gold's got a tracking spell on me, and when I don't show up in a day or so he'll come looking. Or when he realizes I've been out in what should be the middle of the ocean."

"Still," Rachel said, looking down a bit and playing with her hair. "I feel like I should be more useful than I am."

Tina hesitated a moment before she sighed. "Well, you can continue your lessons with Gold and try to get your memories back. Then you'd know more."

"Yeah..." Rachel muttered. She wasn't all that enthusiastic about getting her memories back, but it seemed to be getting more and more important that she did.

Tina didn't say anything more, just handing over a few fruits for dinner and managing to build a little fire for them as it got dark.

Rachel was quiet as she nibbled on the fruits and stayed near the fire.

Tina made sure everything was safe before she set down a bedroll for Rachel.

"I'll keep watch and keep the fire going tonight," she said quietly. "You go ahead and get some sleep, I know you're not as used to jumping around like a madwoman."

"You need to get some sleep, too," Rachel protested. "I can stay up for a while so you can rest."

"I'll wake you up in a little while," Tina agreed. "But you know this is far from the first time I've gone without sleep."

"I know," Rachel said. "but still. You should try to get some rest, too."

"I will, don't worry." Tina smiled a bit. "Go on and get comfortable, I'm fine for a little while yet."

"Alright," Rachel said. She went and settled down for a while, although it took her a long time to drift off.

Tina let her sleep through until morning, and then she poked Rachel a few times.

"Time to get up. I got breakfast."

Rachel grumbled and sat up.

"I thought you were going to wake me so you could get some sleep last night," she said, rubbing her eyes a bit.

"I noticed you were up late and didn't sleep much, so I stayed up." Tina shrugged. "No big deal." She just hoped Gold would figure out all was not well soon. The mermaids were freaking her out every time she got within sight of the shore.

"Tina..." Rachel sighed. "You could have woken me."

"Don't worry about it. If I get tired, I'll take a nap this afternoon." Tina shrugged.

"I'll hold you to that," Rachel threatened. She wasn't kidding, either.
