Baelfire had watched them silently, a little surprised with how Rumple acted around Tina. But he didn't say anything, waiting for Gold to make the first move.

Gold just looked at Baelfire, cautious now.

"Bae?" he asked hopefully.

"Been a while." Bae didn't move any closer, though. "Why did you come after me?"

"Why?" Gold looked at him. "Bae, you're my son. Why wouldn't I?"

"You had your magic," Bae spat. "That always seemed more than enough for you."

"Bae, I was weak," Gold said. "I wasn't strong enough to resist, and I had a moment of weakness." He looked at Baelfire. "I've spent every moment since that day trying to find you again."

Bae blinked at that. He'd never imagined Gold would describe it like that. Maybe he actually had changed.

"But you still use magic," he pointed out. Because of course he'd seen that with Tina.

"Would you throw away a useful tool?" Gold pointed out. "I'm different now, Bae. Magic... isn't always the answer."

Bae nodded slowly. That was not an answer the Rumple he knew would have given. Now he just had to decide what to do.

"So what do you want?"

"I want my son back," Gold replied. "It's what I've always wanted."

"Your son..." Bae snorted. "I'm a different person now."

"So I see," Gold replied. "And I'm deeply sorry I wasn't able to be there for you, Bae. But you must believe me when I say I tried everything I could."

"After it was too late." Bae hesitated for a few moments. He seemed very earnest and eager, and he hadn't lied (that Bae knew of anyway).

"Alright, I'll give you one chance. One."

Gold nodded in acceptance.

"Thank you, Bae," he said.

Bae nodded and looked at Tina.

"Will she be alright?" he asked quietly. She still looked a bit pale and woozy, after all.

"Once I can get her home and get some real food into her, yes," Gold replied, nodding. He was keeping an eye on her, and he had a veritable arsenal of strengthening spells, if he felt she needed one. The only perk to having a bad leg was learning how to compensate for weakness.

Bae nodded again. He'd agreed to give Gold a chance, but he wasn't going to live with him, so he'd have to find a place to stay. At least until he made up his mind.

"I need to get her back," Gold said, gathering his and Tina's things. He looked at Baelfire. "Will you come with us, Bae?" Because he recognized that Bae was, at least, an adult now and could make his own decisions.

The fact that Gold asked instead of ordering pretty much made Bae's decision for him.

"Yes. I'm not staying with you, though." He could rough it for a few days, not a problem.

"Why not?" Gold asked, trying to mask the stab of hurt he felt at that. "We have more than enough room. You could have an entire wing of the castle to yourself, if you choose."

"No. Not yet. That feels too much like you're trying to buy affection." Bae shook his head. "I can't."

Gold looked very much like he wanted to argue, but thought better of it and nodded slightly.

"Alright," he said. At the very least, he could respect Bae's choice.

Bae found himself surprised yet again that Gold didn't argue it. Maybe he was a different person.

"Lead the way," was all he said instead.

Tina hauled herself to her feet, though she was still being careful.

Gold nodded and turned back to Tina. After a moment, he handed her his walking stick.

"Here," he said. "It will be of more use to you."

Tina shook her head stubbornly. "I'll be fine," she said. "My leg doesn't hurt anymore." Well, not much. "I'll be fine after I get some sleep, and I can last until tonight."
