And not just your positioning, although that's fine to talk about as well.
What I'm talking about is this: Sleep (or how to hack your brain) + Dustin Curtis
Monophasic versus Polyphasic sleeping; sleeping all in one go versus sleeping in chunks.
Summer last year, I tried the Uberman, which is six 20-minute naps. I lasted about 2 days. I also understand the issue with that one as it only allows you to get REM which, while important, some claim that we do still need the others.
I wouldn't mind getting down to Uberman again, but I don't think it's a cycle for me.
After settling my sleeping down (it was somewhat erratic and I was sleeping a lot, too much) to a solid 9 hours or so every night (even still sometimes taking a nap in the afternoon) I've decided to try another method.
Currently I'm between a Siesta and an Everyman 2-nap. Instead of sleeping for 6 or 4.5 hours, I sleep for 7, but I also take two 20-minute naps during the day. I'm hoping to get down to a solid Everyman 2-nap, but we'll see!
So any of you ever tried or currently sleep in one of the polyphasic methods?
Do you think you'd want to?
What's your current sleeping cycle?

I just sleep *laughs* if I'm tired I nap during the day but thats rare.
I've never heard of any of these methods before. Thanks for the education!

I'm the same. Back when I was just sleeping whenever. If I was tired, I would just go to sleep. Bad thing for me was that I was used to taking long naps (3+ hours) during the afternoon. That meant that if I went out to town or anything, I ended up feeling very tired and sleepy because I was out there during the time I napped. Which was also the most common time I was out there. So it just ended up being not enjoyable and restrictive. Even though these call for naps too, at least it's only 20 minutes. And flexible still until you get into Everyman Nap-3, I think. P:

I'd think I would be between a monophasic or the polyphasic sleep. But, if I slept 8 hours, I could take another 3 hour nap in that day. And I don't think I could.. take 20 minute naps, that wouldn't do justice for me. I don't "cat nap", I'm more like a bear.
I have all 8:30 AM classes, and I tend to hit the bed at 12 AM because of the amount of homework given. I wake up at 6 AM, so I only get six hours. Than if I finish getting ready early before I leave the apartment, I'll take a 15 minute nap. When I get back, I'll take a ginormouos nap if possible.

I'm different from all of those. Cloud and I don't even really attempt to do this, but we sleep about 4-6 hours per night in two separate phases of about equal length.
It's just something that kinda worked out that way. We'd get about half a night's sleep, wake up in the middle of the night, and "...aw, crap. What now?"
But then we discovered that's actually about the natural human sleep cycle. So we don't stress over it anymore. Instead we just get up, make a snack or something, read a book, goof off, water the damned plants maybe. Anything that doesn't involve turning on lights because that just screws everything up. And we're back asleep an an hour to an hour and a half.
We were both like that for most of our lives...but now that we're sharing a bed, our timing has kinda synced. Which is awesome until the rest of the family wakes up to find something weird we left while awake and forgot in the morning. Sometimes that hour of wakefulness is like being drunk without the physical impairment.

Not completely true as far as poet is concerned. If poet doesn't get deep sleep, poet wakes up in a LOT of pain... o.o
Deep sleep allows the body to repair itself because the body is at rest, not because it is sleeping.
It's comparative to running (awake/moving) vs walking (sleeping/laying down)
Some nights poet doesn't get any REM sleep... and poet will have a very hard time waking up.
Poet's system for sleep is a bit better form poet given that sleep is in approximately 90 minute cycles if working right.
So poet can sleep for either
1.5 hours
3 hours
4.5 hours
6 hours
7.5 hours
And anything about about the 8 hour mark will put poet into oversleep where poet is sleepy all day...

I'm a polyphasic sleeper by default ever since I was.... forever LOL
I sleep 8 hours during the night and another 2 at 4pm-6pm. That used to be my schedule.
The past 3 years have been really insane. My current uni thesis + work commitments means I sleep for 3 hours and I'm awake for 5 and so on in that cycle.
I have a blood disorder than makes me tired very quickly which is why I need multiple sleeps.

Back in high school and in college I was a Siesta person. six or seven hours at night then a hour to two hour nap after school (roughly around 4 o'clock).
But now I'm on this messed up sleep cycle because of my irregular hours at work. I only take naps when I'm completely beat. and end up sleeping anywhere from 10 to 12 hours in one go. Unless of course they put me on a close shift one day followed by opening shift the next then I'm lucky if I get 5 hours of sleep.
How I long for a real job so I can get back to Siesta schedule. I was healthier and had more energy when I was on that cycle.

I normally sleep in 2-3 sets, usually about 4 hours long. When I wake up, I go pee, then lay back down. I can't get back to sleep if I do anything else. I prefer sleeping all in one but my body just doesn't work that way. I think the length of my sleep um phases were programmed by medication at some point. I have a lot of sinus problems and like all that kind of medication lasts four hours and I've noticed, nights I've had to take it, I tend to wake up just when I should take the next dose. So I guess at some point my body just decided that's what it's supposed to do all the time.

Oh in the fall/winter I nap a lot. I think, sadly, I have a mild form of seasonal depression. And I have cats. So I don't feel like doing anything except maybe snuggling the cats, which turns into naps.
Pizza dreams and pizza nightmares All in turbo-vivid dream style. I had a nightmare so bad involving people at my work that I was actually nervous about going in the next day.

I feel similar. When it's cold outside and cloudy (days of typical fall/winter weather) I just want to stay inside where it's warm and not do anything. I also start to feel a bit down if there's a good number of days in a row with no sunshine.
I used to take naps in the bedroom with the balcony door's curtain pulled to the side to enjoy some sunshine while I slept.
Scary. D:

I usually oversleep all in one go, and occasionally have naps. But lately I've been only sleeping about 5 hours. I suppose it's been due to being sick but still.

Aww! Hope you feel better soon! Odd to me that you're getting less sleep when sick since most people get more sleep. Or try to at least.

Thanks Ikuto, I'm feeling a lot better than I had been already. But yes, it is a bit unusual for being sick and not being able to sleep.

I normally sleep for 5-6 hours at night but I wake up at least once or twice between dreams; I just turn around and continue sleeping. Depending on how early I need to get up, after the 5-6 hours of sleep, I just turn around and sleep for 2-3 more hours then I'm done. None of those fits me, the closest one is The Siesta. The longest I've slept in one go in my life is 9 hours. I know people that can sleep over 12-14 hours...... I have no idea how they manage that.

Oof, I remember sleeping for 12-13 hours once or twice. Definitely didn't wake up feeling refreshed.
