"Thanks," she said quietly, curling up in the chair she was currently occupying. After a few moments of that, though, she got up and headed for the back door. Maybe sitting outside for a while would help settle her.

It didn't take Dominic long to get his hands on a few books for her. He was able to evade questions as to why he wanted the books eaily enough; he was known to read from time to time, although it wasn't his favorite pastime. But he got a few for her, mostly history and a rather rare volume on different youkai species. They would likely keep her busy for a while.

Mira was especially interested in the book on different youkai species, and spent hours studying it. The book was especially specific abut dog demons, which she figured might come in handy later on.

Meanwhile, Lucius was slowly getting used to having a woman in the house. Especially a human woman. But he found he didn't dislike it as much as he'd originally thought he would.

Terra made it a point to behave herself and not get in the way as she gradually settled into life with them. It helped that Aidan seemed to adore her, though, since it seemed to buy her some bonus points with Lucius.

Lucius made sure Aidan spent plenty of time with the rest of the youngsters in the clan, and he himself spent his days taking care of business, reading over papers, and making sure that all was in order in his house.

So one night after Aidan had gone to bed, he moved over to sit across from Terra, watching her for a few moments, the spots under his eyes vivid in the firelight.

Terra blinked in surprise when he sat down across from her, and her gaze was briefly drawn to the spots under his eyes before she refocused on him.

"You're settling in well," Lucius observed quietly. "So far, at least." He raised an eyebrow at her, silently asking if his observation was correct.

Terra nodded a bit.

"I've been trying not to get in the way," she said.

Lucius nodded his approval of that. "Do you intend to continue doing so for the rest of your life?" he asked quietly.

"What do you mean?" Terra asked cautiously, looking at him. "Have I done something wrong?"

"No. I just wish to know what your intentions are." Lucius looked at her evenly.

"Intentions?" Terra asked. She went quiet for a moment. "I want to go home, but I don't think it's possible. So for now... I guess just not causing trouble is good enough."

For a moment, Lucius was surprised. Then he smiled faintly.

"Not causing trouble. Alright. That will suffice."

Terra blinked.

"It will suffice for what?" she asked. She got the distinct feeling that she'd just been tested somehow.

"Did you honestly think I would leave an unknown and untested human around my son for long?" Lucius asked quietly, watching her. "I'd like to think I'm a better father than that."

"I'm not sure I understand," Terra said cautiously, watching him. There was definitely something she was missing.

"Humans aren't common pets, Terra," Lucius said quietly. "Few have them, but generally they're harmless enough. I simply had to be sure you were as well."

"'Generally harmless enough' implies that it isn't always the case," Terra observed quietly.

Lucius closed his eyes briefly. "No. Not always." His voice was quiet, and after a few moments he shook himself briefly, glancing at her. "That doesn't matter, though. So long as you remain harmless, we won't have any problems."

Terra could tell there was some sort of old pain there, but she didn't pry for the moment.

"I think I'm pretty harmless," she said.

"Good. See that you stay that way." Lucius rose and stretched.

"Now, is there anything else you require that you do not have yet?"

"I have everything I need," Terra replied. She hesitated for a moment. "Although... maybe something to read? A book or two?"

Lucius blinked. "You read?" he asked before he could stop himself. He could read, of course, as could Aidan, and the rest of his family. But he didn't know of any humans that could read, certainly not the pets that he'd seen over his years. So naturally he was a little surprised.

Terra nodded, although she was curious. Apparently, reading was a rare skill.

"I like to read," she said.

Lucius blinked, clearly startled, before he nodded slowly. "Alright. I will see what I can get for you, then." It was still a little startling, but he'd adjust. "Is there anything in particular I can get for you?"
