Thank you again for the help, Ferra!

So since I suck pretty badly at finding someone to just speak Japanese with casually, I finally went and found a teacher on italki and signed up for a lesson. \ o / It's just a trial lesson, but I'm hoping it will go well and I can continue with this teacher and actually get some speaking practice in with a real person.

I need some halp~
This guy is using a bunch of Japanese. XD

He asked how long I had been learning Japanese so I told him 6 years, but that I was still a beginner. And then he said
Quote:
それは 初心者とは 言いませんw
本当の初心者に失礼ですからw
And I think I said I didn't think so.

And he said:
Quote:
何かを6年間続けて ビギナーとは 言わないと思います、少なくとも 日本では。はい。
謙虚は美徳とも言われる場合がありますが、謙虚すぎるのは 嫌味と 捉えられる場合が あるので注意が必要 です^^
And then I tried to explain that just for that amount of time, I'm not as far along as I should be for someone who has studied that long.

And he said:
Quote:
I can't tell if I'm misunderstanding the tone or what. @ [email protected]
I'm just trying to be humble about my abilities and not overplay them because I do still feel like a beginner.
I've just never had anyone question me calling myself that.

That sensei is saying something about, depending on different situation, being too humble is not good, she? advice to pay attention to that kind of habit/culture. As over humble may give people negative impression.

Well, I think both of you have different definition of beginner.
As for her tone, my personal guessing would be, she is not all that mad, but like you? trying to let you understand more?

I'd have to see what you wrote to get a better idea of why they responded the way they did. Sounds like maybe you could have thrown in a "そうですね" after their second response and the conversation would have stopped there. But since you apparently argued back, they were trying to explain more thoroughly why they responded the way they did. I have no idea what their intent is (especially since I don't know the full context) but maybe they felt a little defensive after you continued to disagree with them, which is why their response seems a little... over the top?

Not sure if this applies, but sometimes in Japanese when there's social awkwardness where one party is upset or disagrees with the other, the opposite side will go out of their way to talk them to death with polite, long sentences until the situation is defused. Maybe he/she misread your tone as being upset/aggressive and they are trying to resolve it? In any case, I'd just give a "You're right, I think I just misunderstood. Thanks!" type of response.

I said
Quote:
えぇぇ!そう思わない。
after his first quote above. Which I'll admit I figure is pretty strong. XD But eh, at that point, I didn't really care about engaging him.

And
Quote:
I'm just saying. I'm not as far along as I should be for someone who has studied that long. :P
After the second quote.

And that's basically it. xDD
This guy sent me like a friend request, so I accepted it, he said よろしく and I said that back. Then he asked in English how long I had been studying Japanese. And I said 6 years, but I'm still a beginner and that's when it all started. He's not a teacher or anything, just some dude.
I mean, should I not be saying I'm a beginner? Is it really being rude to other beginners?
What's a different way I could address my level?

And thanks for the help thus far, you guys.

Lol, I am such a thick skin person to understand the sensitivity issue of Japan culture. XD If I ever had any suspicion that I hurt someone, I would double confirm with them. *shruggs*
I thought you are talking with your teacher. XD haha.

Ah, well in that case it sounds like he's making a mountain out of a mole hill. I also assumed this was a chat with someone you're familiar with. Since you're virtual strangers, I agree that his response seems weird and unnecessarily... complicated? He doesn't seem like a good chat buddy since everything he said wasn't targeted to a self-professed beginner.

I'd probably just ignore him.

Well the only thing that stands out to me is that you wouldn't use "の" after "きた".
