its about lawsuits poet. say a dead seal gets caught in a fishingnet, I'm supposed to take its snout or head off and send it to the lab people so they can get genetics, isotopes and dental records on it. they can get tons of population data this way. but then someone posts a pictures of them doing it or something, peta sues the government or uses the image in some anti cruelty campaign, and then youve got lawsuits flying left and right and the observer needs to get pulled into court as a witness. It just makes everyone look bad.
The other part is that fishermen are very secretive about their practices. They need to abide by the regulations and i am there to make sure of that, but we don't have the right even as government workers to reveal their fishing locations or techniques or even their identities, so thats why we arent allowed to post any pictures where you could identify the boat or the crewman. at least not while at sea. It's ok if they are sitting at the dock because anyone walking by could have taken those pictures. Basically what i can show people is like... a cool whale/seal in the water, birds, scenary, the boat pulled up to the dock. what i cant show that i would like to show is cool fish that come up in my sample, pictures of me doing my job, etc etc. oh well.

Really what I'd want to see is some of the deep sea fish that get caught in the net.
Some of those things look epic.
Never seen Peta upset about an angler fish

Oh nice. Taxidermy can make some beautiful lifelike work from something no longer living.

Gorgeous work. For a long time I wanted to become a taxidermist... but then I skinned my first animal and passed out. :/
That wasn't going to work out.

I have a family friend who is recognized as the best fish taxidermist in the world >w<
I've been in his workshop... the animals there look amazing. I actually have photos he let me take (okay moreso he kept pointing at stuff to take pictures of)
But the animals look so... well respected. It's nice compared to the ones who really disrespect the animals by making weird monsters out of them.

I can see it both ways. Taxidermy is a legitimate art form and I'm impressed by those who can do it well. Like all forms of art there are going to be those who want to create that which isn't real. I get more upset by those who create squirrel lamps than the fake animals.

Well the problem with the "fake animals" is that they use a real animal to make the fake one >.<
But yeah... when a guy is painting each scale individually... that's definitely a time consuming art :)

I think taxidermy can be art... really art is just a question of how something is perceived i think. I really believe anything can be art, literally anything. Also the cool fish pics i can't post, but I can show you as long as you promise not to post them. If you PM me your email I could show you a whip nose and fang tooth angler i pulled up last year, and a pacific scabbard fish.

I once saw a video of a taxidermy version of a flying fox with propellors on it such that it could be flown with a remote control to fly it....it irked me...

Someone did that to their cat too... it's pretty disturbing how little care people give to nature.

I dunno ling I think that sounds pretty awesome. Everything is nature, including human kind and their creations. I have to hack up seals and whales and stuff for my job sometimes, for science (don't worry they are already dead). When something is alive, it is an individual and should be treated with kindness and respect wherever possible I think. Once something is dead though... it's just meat. I think creative taxidermy is kind of fun. If someone hooked up some crazy gadgets to my body after I died, well one I would be dead so I wouldn't care, and two, I would like it if my corpse could make someone smile. There is no reason to shy away from death. It is always with us.

That woulds be amusing to watch... like a cinematic that doesn't show anything actually happening...
Euthanizing a bird? Why would you have to?

if a bird crashes into the boat or otherwise gravely injures itself, it is marked for death. We rehabilitate them if we can, but if not we either euthanize them or toss them out into the ocean and let the albatross tear them to pieces... personally, i think that is a shitty way to go so i just put them out of their misery.

Yeah being ripped to shreds sounds...... unpleasant...
I say the less pain an animal has to go through the better... especially if there is no saving it...
Unfortunately on land the only hope a bird has is running into a cat afterwards...
