Yeah... a lot of birds break their neck from that... nothing you can do but save them the pain...

How sad, but I suppose it's better to quickly get it over with than allow the birds to suffer for a prolonged period if death is inevitable.

Yeah... it's always sad but when a bird breaks it's neck... it takes a lot to fix that

yeah. its just that because of the nature of the commercial fishing boats there can be a lot of accidentds. a lot of people don't know this, but actually the boats are going to great lengths to prevent the birds from getting hooked these days, at least in alaska. It is law there that they use non-harmful bird deterrants (usually streamers but they work very well), on their lines, its one of the things I check for when im working. However there are still a lot of injuries and deaths from things that the fishermen cant really prevent. a lot of the birds crash into the boat at night because they need to leave their working/warning lights on, and te birds fly into them and get disoriented. sometimes they do this in massive numbers if there is a huge flock, they call it a bird storm. Other time they make the mistake of flying really close to the exhaust shaft and getting coated in soot, whic takes away their waterproofing and often times kills their ability to fly effectively as well. Basically if either of these things happen and the bird lands on the boat successfully and is just dissoriented and confused, it is very possibile to rehabilitate it. If it is injured at all we don't have the time and releasing it would be death, so we euthanize or just leave it be (though it will die soyou might as well help it along). If it is a rare bird though with conservation status, like ashort tailed ablatross, we rehabilitate it as best we can, and take it into land for medical care if it is too injured to be released but still might make it. It would be nice to do that for every seagul and fulmar, but if we did that would be our whole job. We also have data to collect and mammals to monitor, and data to collect. even though they aren't in any immediate danger the data protects the fish and the mammals in the long term, and it is way more important for the planet then saving some gulls and things.

Albatross Are jerks anyways. Tell them about guillemots and shearwaters. They're cute and squeaky.
Also grey seals are scary and big

Sheerwaters are a kind of petral. They are sleek and cool, and tend to stay out of trouble. They are sort of agile/aware birds. Guillemots are much closer to the shore, and I'm pretty sure they are in the alcid group wit puffins. they look like if you crossed a pigeon and a penguin. :)

I love Guillemots. Super cute, they have two poses on land. Bowling pin and curling stone. I liked them more than the puffins when I worked with them. Oh and shearwaters "dance" across the waters surface, very neat to watch.

Sounds nice! =] I'm just at home with the munchkin, who's attempting to crawl to me. She's almost got it, but not quite.

I don't have any mini Longcats running around, but I remember how my younger brother went from crawling to running with no waffling stage in between. I was a buggy baby, my parents put me in one of those baby runners that had the bumpers on it, just had to make sure the stars were gated off.

Thankfully here, we live in an apartment with only one floor, so no stairs to worry about here, just got corners and stuff, but it's all been baby proofed, with the help from my dad and brother. :]

I know that there is one thing that between all of us, we just forgot to proof and she'll find it.
