I know I'm weird, but I've always wanted braces.
I think they look cool, but my teeth have always been too straight. xD
But then again, this is coming from the chick with the tattoos and piercings, I like weird shiny things. lol

It's only really bad after an adjustment nowadays.. but that first week. I bought a blender just to blend my In n Out burgers cause I also had to have an appliance to keep my teeth from knocking off the brackets on the top row and that appliance basically made it so my front teeth wouldn't close. I had braces for two and a half years or so. I had hideously crooked front teeth, though, and while I totally didn't want to go through braces I was beyond ashamed to smile so I went and got my braces on without any whining.

I had to make a decision between having braces for three or more years, or two or so years based on whether or not I got a molar removed. I regret it now, but had the molar removed. I regret it because now I have to explain it to every dentist I go to.

Braces weren't too painful for me. I did have to wear headgear for a year, but only at night, and for the most part I forgot about it the second they told me I no longer needed to wear it. But anyway, back to the pain. The worst dental pain I've ever felt (probably the worst pain I've ever had period) is when they put the spacers in between my back teeth in preparation for the braces. Let me put it this way. They gave me Vicodin for my pulled tooth. I didn't use it. I used every single pill during the time I had the spacers. Also, I had wisdom teeth removed. No pain.

Something I still hate about braces, though, is the retainer. Will never quit hating that.

Oh my goodness. Putting in the spacers is one of the most painful things I've ever been through. I don't remember much pain after it was already in though.. it felt like my teeth were just moving as they always did.

Haha, dentists are always confuzzled when they look my my xrays too because I am missing a top right molar. XD

Oh, that's crazy. The molar I'm missing is on the upper right as well. I believe it was the one behind my canine.

*shakes head* I don't remember how long it hurt, but at least a few days. I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that much pain. Like, I've been able to eat straight after huge cavities (only had one) even if it was embarrassing due to the numbness, and after wisdom teeth removal, etc. but I swear I could not eat for three days after those spacers.

Mines never grew in which probably was for the better.. it would have been much more crowded with another tooth there. But given the choice I'd like to keep most of my teeth. I ended up having to take out two bottom canines to make room for the braces.

I think that spacers give a pretty sharp painful feeling because the way they make space is so.. brute. XD It's enough of a pain to wedge 'em in between the back teeth and then your mouth ends up doing everything it can to push em out haha.

Oooh, that sucks. I wouldn't have let them touch any of my canines. I can't say for sure, but I think I'd have told them I'd rather have slightly crooked teeth than lose my canines.

Yeah, and I think it's also that my teeth are really close together. I have a small mouth and I even find it hard to floss those back teeth because they're like molded together.

haha okay well I found out it was actually my premolars that were taken out. My canines are pretty dull though so I mistook them for other teeth haha. Most people would probably want to keep their canines. o_o;

Ah I see. Smaller faces are nice to look at but it also means a lot of crowding haha. Weird thing is that I think my jaw is pretty average sized yet when I open my mouth it's like there's no room for any of the teeth. <_<
Flossing is so hard especially for the back teeth. Because I have braces I already need to thread the floss into those little hoop thingies, and then there's the matter of sticking that around the bracket. It's like they need to design a new flossing tool just for people with small mouths and braces.

I had braces when I was a little kid and after a few years they got taken off. Now, years later my wisdom teeth have come in and absolutely wrecked my teeth so I'm about to have my wisdom teeth ripped out and start wearing some sort of tooth mover in the next week or two.

I love the idea of straight teeth. I want me some!

Oh, that sucks nonsense. Is it Invisalign that you're getting?

@Risque: I forgot I was going to say when I first saw this thread that you can totally eat those Cheetos....I ate absolutely everything I wasn't allowed to eat...taffy...caramel...Snickers...Doritoes...corn ON the cob....and my teeth came out fine. No stains, no broken wires, no nothing...perhaps I was lucky, but I never had a problem. Sure, I had to be diligent in flossing and brushing after the caramel or what have you, but you've got to do that anyway.

I don't really have a small face...in fact I have to wear the large sized hats to fit my head...it's just that the inside of my mouth is small for whatever reason even though I appear normal. I have really small hands, too.

One time I snacked on a big party sized bag of Lays chips and wound up with infected gums. It was swollen with blood and pus, and the dentist used a big ol metal poker to jab at the infected gums until it released all the ickiness. It was also so painful that I haven't dared eat chip since. 8D

Corn on the cob with braces? My you were a brave one. xD

Huh. I must've had gums of steel then. Cause, I swear. I didn't do anything they told me to do other than floss, brush, and use mouthwash occasionally. Never a problem.

No, I was a rebellious creature of habit who wanted to see just what the problem was with eating those foods. XD And when there were none, I just told the doc I didn't eat them. Lolz.

When I went in for a checkup once I did get stuck behind this dude who had been eating ice with his braces and broke off one of the brackets. Thought that one was brilliant of him.

That guy has some bigger problems if he's chewing on ice. D:

You either have gums of steel or I am just really bad about getting chip bits out of my teeth. They should emphasize cleaning over avoiding foods in my opinion. I'm sure that most people can eat chips as long as they are good like you about cleaning up after.

I had braces for two years of my life. My teeth are nice, and straight. (:
But I've had a upper and bottom retainer since I was 13, I am currently 21 and I still use it till this day. I probably will still be using it until it breaks. Kind of sad, but I don't want my teeth shifting during the night, and in the morning I wake up with crooked teeth, ya'know? Ha

You don't have to wear them 24/7 I hope. ):
But yeah.. that would be an awful thing to happen after all those years of perfect teeth.

I had braces back when I was 16 and I absolutely hated the feeling... I cried almost every night after my braces were tightened because they hurt so much :( I had to have them because I had fang teeth that were really bad.

Unfortunately though, my dentist was old... and very bad at his job so when he cut the wires off, he accidentally cut my lip and the had to burn something in my mouth, he burnt the top of my mouth! It was a shitty feeling and it adds to my hatred to dentists even more. My braces have since been removed but the bad job done had caused permanent damage to my teeth as my back teeth are like digging into one another and I get tooth aches regularly... I do not regret that I got braces but I absolutely regret going to that particular dentist for them... I really can't imagine people my age wearing braces now. Think it would hurt so much more than it did when we were younger... Really hope my child in the future have nice perfect teeth so s/he would not have to go through the pain >.<

@ Pan: Aww, I'm sorry your had a bad experience with the dentist. It's unfortunate that lots of people get stuck with dentists that do bad jobs.
Sounds like that guy should have just retired. Wouldn't want a malpractice suit against him.

I was 18 when I started braces, and I think it hurts less than it would as a kid since my pain tolerance went up with age, only problem is that I can remember certain pains more vividly. xD
