I honestly didn't know which area to put this in,so I just put it in General Disscusion.
Okay, well I heard that people tend to dress like the music they listen to.I also saw this question on Yahoo Answers and so it got me thinking and I want to know what you all think.
Hmm,for example, when I was younger I was really into metalcore and stuff.I would usally dress up in dark clothes.Black, purple, dark red, dark blue, white shirts.Sometimes (occasionally) neon colored skinny jeans. But most of time it was black skinny jeans. I wanted to have long bangs, but my Mami wouldn't let me because she thought my hair was too curly for that. And often times I would try to keep my hair as straight as possible. And my makeup was usually dark.
But now of course as I aged I started listening to different music.
So now I dress in lighter clothing.I love to wear tank tops now.The tank tops could honestly be in any color and I would probably love it.I still like to wear skinny jeans, but now I'm more into short pants.I love floral patterns now.And I love big (very big!) hoop errings. And instead of keeping my hair super straight I kind of like it curly and I don't want bangs now.And I don't have much of a desire to wear heavy make up anymore.
I even met people at my school who don't stray far from dressing to music.
One guy at my school has a lot of peircings on his face and when he is not required to wear the school uniform,he likes to dress in band tee-shirts and wear cargo pants.I wasn't shocked to find out that he wore that kind of stuff, when I found out he was into metalcore and techno.
Most of the boys in my school listen to rap and they tend to dress in big shirts and baggy pants.
See what I'm saying??
Do you think that people dress the same as the music they listen to,or is it more complex than that??
How do you dress and what kind of music do you listen to?
Do you think your music reflects how you dress??
Give me some examples!

I personally listen to a little bit of everything under the sun.
My music tastes are very diverse and all over the place.
Same goes for the way I dress.
I'm ALL OVER the place.
Some days I'll dress "hoodbilly" aka white trash redneck irish drunk lol. xD
Lots of band t-shirts verying from exploited, rancid, gbh, to flogging molly & dropkick murphys, to twiztid (yes, rap. lol), to lynyrd skynyrd, to pink floyd, to modest mouse, to horrorpops, to rob zombie, to batmobile, to slayer & patera, to cannibal corpse, to nekromantics, to nine inch nails, etc. etc. etc. you get the point.
Sometimes I'll dress "punkish" with my ratty patched up jacket, doc martins, and studs & spikes.
Sometimes I'll be all super cutesy and girly. Sometimes bright colorful & cheery. Sometimes dark and "metal" like. Sometimes I'll wear baggy pants and wife beaters and be all "fuck it, I guess I'm lazy and ghetto today."
Sometimes 40's & 50's pin up type psychobilly style (or classic vintage without today's spin. :]).
Sometimes kind of victorian (with my own spin of course! ;D), sometimes even kind of piratey... and sometimes a combination of all of them! :D
I pretty much just wear whatever the hell I feel like wearing. If I like it, I wear it. lol
I also sew a lot of my own clothes.
So that's a mixture of all sorts of random crazy all on it's own. :]
Depends on my mood and what feels good for the day I guess.
I do however have piercings and tattoos. But I'm a curly haired ginger kid and just kind of work with what I have. ^_^ <3
Although I do like to dye my bangs. Bright red mostly, works with me pretty well. :]
But I don't really fit any particular category.
I'm sure it amuses people to see me walking around with my super clean cut, polar opposite boyfriend. xD
I'm sure people also have their "Da fuk? o_O*" moments too.
lol But yeah, that's me and I dig it. ^_^ <3

I listen to all kinds of music, from Queen to Cradle of Filth and tons of stuff in between! My favorite band however, is Steam Powered Giraffe, a steampunk band. So my taste is pretty much all over the place. And I dress, usually in all black. I do wear like, blue jeans and some lighter colored band shirts, but, usually just black.
I don't really think there's a huge correlation between music and clothing. Though, most people I believe, school age, tend to do it to, idk fit in? Or, something.. not sure really, everyones different. So, personally, depending on the style of music and dress, it could be possible but.... people who listen to Queen, I mean, what? They dress normally, but a CoF fan wears black leather and spikes all the time? See, I don't think that's accurate at all... I know some people, dress as normal as could be, but they love death metal.
This is a very interesting topic though.

Oooh... I do find this pretty interesting and reading about how music influences you guys made me think if it actually influenced me... And yeah, I do believe it has. Thinking about what kind of bands I listened to compared to whatever I listen to nowadays though I don't believe my taste in music has changed much. I still appreciate the music I listened to back then. In fact, some of my friends have mentioned that I am still stuck in the past...
When I was younger, I was a tomboy. Pretty much all through my high school... Never ever wore a skirt except for my school uniform of which it was compulsory for us to wear shorts under the skirt. I liked alternative rock music back then... And so most of my clothes were baggy and a little grungy... loose tees, jeans and sneakers. I avoided pink at all costs...
Then I guess I went into j-pop and some minor visual kei appreciation when I started absolutely loving to be cute! XD And its not easy for a girl like me to be cute... I always have this height complex where I believe my height prohibits me from being cute. I really started liking the gothic lolita thing... I wanted pooffy skirts and lace everywhere! but j-pop also made me want some bright colours and mini-skirts.
Now, I'm pretty much into j-pop and k-pop so the mix is kinda bizarre. I so like my cutesy things. I absolutely love hair ornaments like bows! and i love printed tees and all... edgier I guess? with the k-pop influence and all.
Thinking about it, I think its because I was exposed to this elements by watching their videos and performances. So I dress how they dress and all... Not sure if its the music or the visual...

Oh god if I dressed to what music I listened to, I'd have an Elvis-hair-do, pink tube top under a spikey hardcore jackey, bellbottoms and cowboy boots.
I listen to too many different genres to actually physically appear to match the music.
I do have tattoos, piercings, and regularly dye my hair -feel much more natural as a bottle redhead than a natural blonde- and for some music I listen to it does work, but not all.

Fashion and music are both easy ways to gain access to an image and culture that one can adopt without too much effort. It's only natural that someone who likes the aesthetics of certain fashion trends would also be attracted to the type of music commonly associated with the fashion, and vice versa.
Then there's also my boyfriend, who really doesn't give a crap about fashion, and doesn't really give a crap about music genres, and listens to whatever he feels is good.
I still do band tees and skinny jeans, but without that I think that people generally have difficulties pinning down the type of music I enjoy.

My attire is usually a guy T-shirt old jeans and sneakers and I'm a girl. It doesn't match my music choice.
I listen to varieties of rock genres, country from the 90's and back, oldies, Celtic, Parodies, some pop, even less rap, R&B, Otaku music, music from other countries...
Wow typing this I realized I listen to almost everything.

Definitely not. I dress like a hobo and listen to classic and old songs.
My friend is full on tight-ass (I say this in a nice way and it's a pretty cute thing) in clothes and behaviour but likes the wild and old there folks like Lady Gaga.
Hubby's a fully decked, sophisticated businessman and listens to electro music.
Lots of examples I've seen are like that.

Not true in my case. I wear darker clothes because I have a weird skin tone and light clothing just looks odd on me. I wear mostly button down shirts and hoodies. I'm still trying to find a style that works for me though. I'm in the process of getting rid of clothes and replacing them with clothes I feel more comfortable and that are more masculine.
I listen to a lot of rock based music and most the time when people find that out they're kinda surprised by it. Not too sure why but I guess I don't look like the type to listen to that kind of music. I do listen to a bit of everything though and it depends on the song more than what type of music it is.

True true, quite attractive and exciting. :]
No one would ever be able to tell how much of an adreniline junkie he is just by looking at him, when in reality he's a crazy mutha' fucka'. xD
The kind who climbs rock faces BARE HANDED with nothing to secure him, hanging off the edges of cliffs, doing crazy dangerous jumps on his snowmobile, driving over 100 mph on the freeway late at night (When no one's around of course. He wouldn't put other random people's lives in danger.), speeding up narrow trails in greenwater sliding out sideways all psycho like, and all sorts of craziness that scares the living fuck out of me just to watch him do. lol
I must admit his driving scared the living hell out of me for a while, but now that I know that he knows exactly what he's doing and is in control the whole time, It's really exciting and fun. haha
Holy shit kickers batman. He is one crazy dude.
You definitely wouldn't expect his personality at all, well...lol except his monotone way of speaking, not too into social situations (Neither am I these days though, lol both quite antisocial), straight forward honesty (which I love), responsibility, and calm collected-ness.
I on the other hand, have a crazier outside appearance, kind of out there, the mosh pit type, not calm or collected lol, panicy, bipolar as all hell, dress crazy, listen to crazy music, and come across as "strange" or "rebelious".
But in reality I'm quite conservative in a lot of ways, though I am brave in a lot of ways, such as standing up for what I feel is right, being brutally honest, and always speaking my mind whether it's appropriate or not. lol... I'm a BIG fat chicken when it comes to heights, falling, and a lot of the crazy shit he's into.
Polar fricken opposites man.
It's funny, his family and other people we know pull a "da fuq? o_O?" moment at first but it our comical differences end up growing on them eventually. xD
He swore his mom would never be accepting of me and was all judgemental and such, but I have a habbit of winning people over when they get to know me. ;D
Proved his ass wrong, that's for sure.
Though of course we have a lot of common interests too, I mean hell, we basically grew up together. xD
Share the same general dislike for the human race, swear like sailors, and have the same anger issues. lol
I swear people think we have tourettes when we are in the same place at the same time and get pissed off at the same thing. hahaha
Blah blah ramble ramble novel, I just need to write a damn book already.
But yeah, outside appearance isn't always who you really are inside. ;D

I used to just wear jeans and tee-shirts and no jewelry at all, and I never did anything with my hair. I was really really into rock and grunge at that point in my life. I also had very little time to do anything fancy with the way I looked because it was either that or sleep, and sleep trumped makeup at that point.
I have some prettier/bolder/more colorful outfits now, and try to accessorize as best as I can. I'm getting interested in makeup, although I still have no idea what to do in terms of makeup, though. I listen to more pop/dance/electronica/house/international music now. I feel more like myself, to be honest.

I'm sure that lots of people probably do dress similarly to the kinds of musicians they idolise. Like Risque said, it's a way for people to assimilate themselves into a culture that they identify with.
For me personally, though, I wouldn't say my musical tastes have any bearing on what I wear. I'm not very big on trying to slot myself into groups. I've always been very independent and I like to dress with the purpose of expressing who I am on the inside/who I want to be. I wear a lot of very fitted clothes, usually black with a contrasting colour. Jewel colours suit me - reds, greens, dark blues, aqua, teal. I see so many girls who look cute in pastel colours and baggy tops but they just don't seem to suit me. The look that suits me is bolder. I think that does reflect me as a person.
This is how my style has developed, but when I was in my young teens just starting out I used to be very into the goth look, hahaha. I always wore a ton of jewellery, long skirts, all black, fishnet top, that sort of thing. I hardly wear any jewellery anymore by contrast, usually just a single statement piece if I feel like the outfit needs it. I still have a fondness for darker and edgier styles. I have a couple of tops with bright skull prints on them actually... this is the most recent one I got! (It's just from h&m.)
Oh, um, the goth thing didn't really have anything to do with music, though. I've never really been into much metal or hard rock, or... whatever it is goths listen to...! I just liked the black and the skulls and the jewellery...

Outside of formal events I dress very plainly; solid colors shirts (black, gray, or white), jeans (gray or blue), hiking pants (depending on the circumstance), and shoes. I have found that in nearly every genre there are at least a couple of bands I thoroughly enjoy listening to. If you consider each genre or band I listen to a different flavor and you put them all in a blender you're probably going to get a rather some muddy tasting slime.
So maybe I do dress like the music I listen to. Maybe because I like so many different styles I dress in clothing that represents a little bit of everything, each time of music or band. Or maybe I wear it because it's inexpensive and easy to handle.
I save the fashion sense (the weak underfed one) for formal events.

Haha, thanks!! I'll never forget that I was very goth for a while because I have pictures from my... sixteenth?... birthday where I was decked out in black and fishnet and silver jewellery on a bright spring day. My family and I went out for lunch at an inn, which happened to be just down the road from the chapel where my grandparents were married. So after we ate, we went down to explore around the church and graveyard and I ended up posing on this massive stone monument near some tombs. You can't get more aesthetically goth than that...?

The thing with music is that it becomes a part of you, whether it becomes a part of you temporarily or permanently. It stems from what you like, and then influences your personality and behaviour even if you never realize it. It's a giant psychological phenomenon, so, from a neurological standpoint, the music you listen to can affect how you dress. But, it's not always the case.
I know that I fit the stereotype for the type of music I listen to, which is mostly metal and rock of various subgenres. My closet is filled with mostly grey, black, white, and red clothing; I wear only straight-leg, stonewashed jeans; among other things that I do and do not dress in (like, I don't dress in bright colors, and I never wear anything frilly).
It really depends on the person - some people are like Lorika and just enjoy the aesthetic appeal of a certain dress. :3

I don't really listen to anything specific, neither do i continuously wear anything associated to any given genre of music. During my teen and college years though, i'd say the correlation i saw in other people was huge. Not so much now though.
