Ciel rubs me the wrong way pretty badly, so I've never really thought about that I get the part about wanting to keep someone safe and feed them sweets and stuff though.

Ceil lives within the expected behaviour of someone of his age and standing in the time period and is a very nice person within those societal bounds. Left without them I think he'd have the promise of being a very giving person.. Especially considering his past. plus he doesn't emotionally manipulate/abuse every one around him hello sebastion/alois/faust >_>

Besides the people that he's close to, he's pretty much a manipulative person who does whatever it takes to get what he wants. Just look at the Circus Arc or the Gakuen Arc. And his lies to get Snake to join him.

Yeah, he's not as bad as Sebastian, and I don't know about Alois/Faust though I did hear about how assholery they were, but he's still pretty bad compared to most of the side characters.

...I suppose him totally not being my type might have something to do with it as well. Within the series I prefer the Undertaker or Sebastian.

I've not seen those. I've only seen the anime. Which was a bloody nightmare to get a hold of here.
In those he acts exactly as he 'should' and is easily manipulated. His behaviour is completley within the bounds of propierty of the time and the poking sebastian gives him. He's really REALLY predictable.
Also every human manipulates people around them a little. Even if it's just how you dress to give a good first impression. It's part of how the social brain is constructed. 'make them like me' or 'make them be my friend' is all for personal gain. He doesn't take it as far as the other popular characters I've noticed.

Ah. If you've read the manga you'd see what I mean. He's manipulative, and not in the 'make them like me/be my friend' way. Or, it is, but the only reason he wants that is because of a means to an end to get what he wants. As soon as he gets what he wants he either abandons them, has Sebastian 'take care' of them, or turns them into his servants/someone he can go back to using whenever he needs their capabilities.

Maybe his personality's different in the anime, I wouldn't know since I dislike watching anime.


Yeah, I'm really curious as to what his past was all about! Not sure if this was in the anime (probably not since it was during the Zombie Arc which is after the Circus Arc), but I'm just dying to know what is up with his past and those beads!

In the anime Ceil's just a victim. You need to remember he's only thirteen. A confused child of one of the most emotionally stunted backwards periods in time. He wants the revenge (a thing often lauded in the era and something that would have left an impresion on a pre-teen like him) but he also wants something else. Any time he learns more about what he wants for himself or even takes a break to be happy about something Sebastion almost litteraly shoves him towards his revenge and eventual destruction. Sebastion abandons him in places, manipulates his emotions, ect whenever Ceils' finding any answers not directly related to the revenge thing.

I watched the anime because Someone found a copy that worked here and I was too sick to read XD

Undertaker's past is only vaugely touched on in the anime by Grell, but they picked up book of circus now so maybe they'll go into it then.

After his soul was fused with that of Alois (who needed serious help), Ceil did take a huge donward plummet. As far as I'm aware the book of circus thing takes place a century or whatever after. So that might be why you don't like him. He litteraly became one with Joffrey Baratheon.
