We weren't allowed to share contact information in the hospital.
Not that that's stopped people from sharing before, but usually, we don't share contact information.
I think it's just for the "safety" of everyone in the ward, they want to make sure that people aren't supporting each other's bad habits or that no one is getting triggered or that patient confidentiality isn't being breached.

that's kind of a sad rule.

Yeah, it's pretty sad.
I don't know why exactly we have that rule, but I usually don't share my information with people in the hospital.
There was one person who was discharged from the ward and ended up giving their number to someone else in the ward who wasn't supposed to be discharged for a while and they ended up talking on the phone while she was still in the hospital. That seemed really nice, especially since she didn't get any phone calls from anyone else.

Interesting. They sound like a regular visitor if they were more focused on your needs than their own.
A heavy period can be difficult to manage. I know I've heard things like birth control making the bleeding and cramps far less severe.
Hummy do you know if it helps reduce the bleeding too? I think you were the one to mention it in another thread?
The contact rule is due to HIPAA law. If patient information got out it would get the hospital in very bad trouble.

If I am remembering correctly, it was only her second time in the psych ward ever. But she was much older than me, (I think in her 40s) and she kind of treated me like a baby sometimes.
I can ask Kirin about it. I know Kirin is on birth control.
That makes sense.
I figured it had to do with patient confidentiality. Still, it sucks that we aren't able to keep in contact afterwards.

doesn't HIPPA only pertain to hospital staff giving out information?

Oh I see. So she was just looking out for you. That's a very kind person.
Hummy - You also would want to keep patients from giving out information that may put them at risk. Especially given psyche wards will have vulnerable people in them.

I usually get my own room in the hospital because I have weird sleeping habits,
But this time I wasn't expecting to stay long, so I did everything I could to make sure that I got out as soon as I possibly could.
I am glad that she was my roommate.
I don't remember her name or anything, but she was really nice. My parents liked her because she tried to encourage me to shower and eat and when she was discharged she said, "I know I just got out of the psych ward, but I don't have to look like it." And she curled her hair, put make up on, high heels and left the psych ward like a supermodel.
When this male patient started hitting on her me and her went to our room and just hung out for hours having "girl chat". It was really nice. Then I fell off the window sill because I was sitting on it and I tried to turn around and miscalculated and I fell onto the floor and I was laughing but she was really concerned. I didn't get hurt though...
And then she told me about what brought her to the hospital. I didn't share why I was in the hospital because I don't like sharing personal information like that, but she was open and I didn't really mind. She was really nice.

Showering regularly is important. Though of course, not every day.
Good to hear that you didn't get hurt ^^

She was the best roommate ever. :D
That's saying a lot for me. I've had some roommates who were... eh...
In the children's ward I always got put with the most annoying roommates ever. There was one who wouldn't stop talking to me all day and all night... And she wasn't even saying anything, she was just talking to hear herself talk. She got moved to another ward because she was giving the doctors trouble.
Then I got a new roommate and she was EVEN WORSE than the old one. She had such a nasty attitude and she thought the world revolved around her. I put ice in her shoes when she wasn't looking and I got into trouble for it... But I didn't care. It was worth it.

That is unfortunate... some people feel that the world owes them for what they've been through. It's rather sad.
I think it would be nice if the first time you're in the ward you could do a basic profile that would go on your medical record which would, if space allows, help doctors and nurses better assign roommates. Software could easily do all the work too.

That would be nice.
I wish the hospital did that. That way it's not such a hassle to figure out room situations.
I've never had a problem with roommates in the adult wards, but the children's ward was definitely awful.
I feel like they should do those for children's wards mostly. Adults in the psych ward tend to get along much better in my experience.

I think it may have to do with how the children are raised. Many children with disabilities end up spoiled because the parent "can't deal with them". It's really sad.
Adults are also more prone to having come to terms with their illness. And having started making progress toward a quality life.

That makes sense... I see that all the time in daycare.
I guess so... I remember being a kid and wanting to be in the adult unit and the hospital staff were like, "You don't want to be in the adult unit" And now I see why they said that because it is boring and it is depressing, but at least there isn't as much drama.
If I could take all the toys and the sensory rooms from the children's ward and put it with adults, I think that would be the PERFECT psych ward.

It would be nice if there was more to entertain adults in the hospital. I always only hear about how horrible and boring it is. They're too eager to get out and try to leave early.

Yeah, I agree.
In the adult ward, when someone isn't freaking out, it's usually really boring.
There isn't much we can watch on TV, and there's only one TV... We can't bring our phones or music so we have to listen to crappy headsets that play the radio and that only works if you stand in the right place at the right time. When I am in the psych ward, I usually just sleep all day because the only other option I have is to read a book. Sometimes we walk the hall, but there is only one hall and it's boring to walk the whole time...
I feel awful for the people who stay longer than a month.
That must be hell.
I don't mind the psychosis ward, though, but it can be hell there too. It's never "boring" because we have TV in our own room and we can listen to the radio in our room any time, but the thing is, it's a lot less safe. People there are very sick and sometimes they attack the staff or throw tables and chairs and it's a high stress area always. So it's either, don't be bored, but be scared all day because of the dangerous patients... Or, be safe but be really, really bored.

It definitely can make someone go crazy being there.
The hospital I go to usually doesn't even have anything that we can work out with, so we basically just sit there, sleep all day and eat.
They have one stationary bike in every ward besides the psychosis ward, but most of the time it never works. :/
They have a "library" of outdated books that no one reads, magazines that people have cut out pictures from and a plethora of boring board games.
I usually end up staying anywhere from 2-3 weeks when I go for some reason...?
Most people only stay a few days.

I don't think I could do 3 weeks in a hospital. Especially if there is nothing to read. I tend to enjoy reading, but having outdated books would get old fast.
Idk with my current job though i would probably spend a lot of my time talking to staff if they let me.

You can always bring your own books.
It just sucks when you have all day to read and if you're a fast reader like Ava, then you end up reading all of your books within a couple of days and then you end up being bored for the next two or three weeks.

Thank you for sharing all this, ava the vampire. It sounds tough to be stuck there for long periods, especially when the options are either boredom or danger. And music is not even allowed D:
Did you ever ask them why they keep you for such a long time compared to other people?
Also, the wandering poet - you are such a great empathetic listener! I think it's amazing how you're so open to learning about things and not passing judgment on anyone who might be suffering or struggling

It depends, Poet.
The last time I went, I wasn't allowed a pencil. And if I did happen to use a pencil (such as to fill out my menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner) I had to be supervised.
In the past when I have been allowed a pencil, I have written letters to people or just journaled what I was experiencing there.
I think I have copies of my letters, I usually write to my favorite celebrities and pretend that they are going to receive my letter and come visit me. (I don't usually get visitors in the hospital besides my parents) I have my journal somewhere, if you are interested I could share some of the things I wrote about while in the hospital.
It does suck, salvete! :(
I think the no music rule is really dumb. But I guess they are trying to protect your stuff, as if you have expensive music equipment like headphones or an iPod or something, they want to make sure that other patients don't destroy it or try to take it away from you.
My mom tells me that I usually stay longer because I don't listen to the doctors right away. The last time I went to the hospital, I only stayed about a week and a half because I was compliant and wanted to get out as soon as I could. But usually, hospital is the last resort, so I have been really, really "sick" when going in and resisting the doctors' orders and not going to groups. The quickest way to go home from the psych ward is to go to groups. They like to see you mingling among the other patients, but I hate groups so I never go.
I agree with salvete, Poet! You've been really nice in listening to me rant about the hospital for a while now,
