I think it was easier to be original in the 80's/90's because gaming was just new. You can't avoid things getting repetitive if an industry booms over a relatively short period of time and suddenly produces crazy amounts of games on a crazy amount of platforms compared to what was available then. Eventually, it gets hard to come up with something that has never been done before, and it gets hard to filter the truly awesome new stuff out of the masses of average new games. And for that reason, I don't think comparing new games to old games is fair.

It's also not like all old games are legendary and nothing crappy was produced back then (anyone remember Tweety & Sylvester on GameBoy?). Or like all awesome old games are legendary now. I kid you not: I recently went to a retro gaming convention and asked every single stand with PC games if they had a game called "Drakan: Order of the Flame". It's the prequel to a 2002 PS2 game called "Drakan II: The Ancient's Gates", which is one of the best fantasy games I've ever played and (I think) one of the first games to use a flying mount. One which is also used in combat in the air and on the ground. I have Drakan II, but have been looking for Drakan I fruitlessly for ages. Anyway, I asked everyone selling PC games and 90% of them had never heard of Drakan, the rest didn't know where I would be able to find it. One clever gentleman replied "Dragon? Dragoon? Do you mean Legend of Dragoon?", another gave me the URL for a French game collectors' forum, and I went home without the game.

Something that does irritate me is when a good game is turned into a series, and that series drags on until it just ruins itself. A good example is Spyro. I loved the first three games, but just couldn't get the hang of the ones that came afterward on Gameboy and PS2. And now they turned it into "Skylanders"...

I just quickly skimmed through this thread, but I think that RPGs for sure have taken a nose dive since they've started doing voice acting and spending more time trying to make the graphics amazing. I STILL think Xenogears was the best RPG ever and there has yet to be a game to really be that in depth and gripping since it. I was disappointed in Xenosaga. I tried playing the first and got fairly far into it...it just didn't capture the same magic.

That being said the older I get, the less time I have and the less I get to play videogames. I still am addicted to certain games though...Animal Crossing being one of them. :D

I do miss a lot of the old old games. I actually had one of those moldy old Ataris where everything was 8 bit and forward scrolling; I still haven't found (due to forgetting their names!) some of those and the old Sega Genesis things I liked playing.

I think I really started playing a lot of games when Playstation happened. I have had other consoles, but the only one I've kept any of my old games from was some fo the PS1 and 2 games.

I think my very favourite series was Silent Hill, although I haven't played past 0rigins and really did not like it. I haven't owned the systems for Shattered Memories or Homecoming, so I haven't got an opinion on those.

I miss old fashion dungeon crawlers Eye of the Beholder. Sure, every now and then you get throwbacks to the classics like Legend of Grimrock, but it's hardly the majority.

The only thing that annoys me about modern RPGs is that storylines are consequently getting more and more linear. Skyrim was horrendous at this, which is a shame given that Morrowind was a goddamn masterpiece in this regard. Give me options or give me death!

I miss classic adventure games. The likes of Grim Fandango, Loom, Escape from Monkey Island, The last Express, Myst, and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The frustration (sometimes constant) always turned worthwhile as I always felt rewarded by my perseverance. There's something special about a game that rewards you for the effort you put in. As aggravating as it could be the difficulty never seemed meaningless. It was pointed, purposeful, and there were so many "OH!" moments that if I'm sure there's a really apt metaphor for this.

I miss playing my Gameboy games as well.
