And that is where we have issues. A single person alone, can not survive on minimum wage, even working full time. Plus it is nearly impossible to find anywhere that will higher for full time any more. Companies now prefer to higher lots of full time employees instead of higher a smaller amount of full time people.

Pretty much, yeah.

Back when the minimum wage was established, it was indeed possible to pay all your basic living expenses working a full-time, minimum wage job. And while yes, the minimum wage has gone up, it hasn't gone up nearly enough to keep up with the cost of living. Where minimum wage has followed a pretty much linear path in its increasing, cost of living has followed an exponential path. The gap between the minimum income to be able to cover all basic expenses now vs what the actual minimum wage is, is pathetic.

It's the reason I still don't live on my own; I literally can't afford to. The rent here alone is $450 a month, and that's the cheapest place we could find that allowed pets, since we're getting a cat again in the new future. Water bill hovers around ~$80ish. I don't know gas or electric, but I'd expect between $30 and $60 for both. Groceries for the both of us usually tend to be around $100 total for the month, give or take since we try to do grocery shopping every couple weeks or so. If I had to live on my own, I'd have to work two jobs just to cover rent, as that alone is more than I make per month. Wouldn't be able to have lights, heat, or running water because, well, I'd have no money left over....

And that's not even to say that if I did live on my own, by job options would be even more limited, as I can't afford a car or the expenses that go along with it. I can't afford to buy the thing in the first place, and even if I could I can't afford the insurance, gas, or maintenance costs. My radius in which I'd be able to apply for and look for work would be even more severly limited than "in-town"--it'd go down to a one mile radius, which is far less than the whole town. Which means as a result, I wouldn't be able to afford a place to live....

Yeah. Hence, living with mom. And mooching off of next door's Internet >>;

Our rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is $1305 a month plus about $70 a month for electricity. This is a place that doesn't accept pets.
The rent in the Denver metro area is outrageous! It's no wonder that there are so many homeless people camping under bridges and in their cars...standing on corners begging for change!

Yeah my rent is like $475 a month which is like a paycheck and a half to two for me. Fortunately all my utilities are included but its been tight. My boyfriend and I started looking at how much cheaper it would be to live together, with him moving in here, and it would actually give us about an extra $200 dollars a month. And the land lord will only raise the rent $50 to cover extra utilities so that is what we are working towards.

I get as many hours as I can at work but the only full time people at my job are the Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager and one other person. The rest of us, even us shift managers, are only part time. Being a shift manager does typically get me more hours than before I was one and $1.50 more an hour, so that helps a tiny bit.

A very tiny bit....

I make about a dollar and a half over the minimum wage here (for me that's $8.25, living in Illinois), but that's still not enough. I've got no intention on trying to become a manager though, because I hate working for McDonald's. That place is literally physically painful for me to work at. I need to get my gaming channel set up and the Patreon for it, and promote like hell >>;. If I can make enough from Patreon for writing and gaming and the odd art, hopefully I'll be able to cut back on hours at McDouchebag's...if not quit entirely. It'll do wonders for my mental health, I'm sure....

I hear you completely. I definitely don't want to be a manager at Joann Fabrics for ever, but my boss is amazing so that makes it worth it. But the dream is to make my living writing books, so that is what I work towards for now.

Colorado State minimum wage is $10.20 an hour...but it's expensive to live in the Denver metro area.
I hear tell that rent is much cheaper in other areas of Colorado.

I don't know what minimum wage is here. :(
I only get around $850/month for disability....

That's not even enough to pay for a one-bedroom apartment rent!

Yeah. I make $8.50 an hour and get maybe $900 on a good month. It is rough as my rent is nearly half of that. Minimum wage here is only like $7.25 or $7.50 I think. So its a little better now that I am a manager but not a whole lot.

I don't want to be a manager where I work. It'd mean dealing with people, and I'm not exactly a people person.....

Neither do I X'D. Being a manager probably requires some sort of degree in food service or business management or something like that...which I don't have XP.

I went to college...then had to drop out because I couldn't afford it and the financial aid at SIUC is piss. The limit to the amount of help with any of the financial aid forms and whatnot was sitting you down in front of a computer that had the fafsa website pinned to the desktop =__=. That's it. Everything else you had to figure out by yourself, including wtf am I supposed to do???????. The financial aid office didn't even have any information on scholarships and grants outside of the fafsa form, it was horrible....

I don't think you have to go to college be a manager. Well at least not in fast food.

I've known a few people who were fast food managers that hadn't completed high school!

My reasoning for not wanting it is; I'm currently working part-time in a toxic environment with shitty bosses who keep on forgetting availabilies of their employees, and (at least with one of them) telling someone that the flu wasn't a good enough excuse...why would I want to spend a full-time job in that same environment, working even more closely with those shitty bosses? Sure, there'll be more of a paycheck, but it ain't worth the cost to my mental health. I've already had a couple minor breakdowns at work before, and as embarassing they are I do not want to end up having a full-on, major breakdown or panic attack. Especially with managers who really don't seem to give a flying rat's ass about whether or not their employees aren't, y'know, considering getting shot in the knee as an alternative to coming to work.

Sorry friends. I am getting horrible about spending time on my laptop. Going to start hopping on from my phone, like I am now, for awhile. Hopefully in the next month or so things will fall better into line and I will be around my laptop more.
