You'd be surprised. I had some people tell me that they didn't celebrate Thanksgiving because of past events. Some people are getting up on it.

History is written by the victor. The saying is very true. What is revolution for us is rebellion for others and vise versa. Perception makes a lot of things. Maybe that's another point of this entire pet peeve on holidays I have. Opinion and thought process make up an issue or make a lack of issue in some cases.

Considering how Americans skip Thanksgiving dinner just to line up before midnight, yes.
Thanksgiving isn't profitable but the day after is!

I absolutely refuse to go out on Black Friday. People are out of their minds on that day and I like not bleeding.

Yeah people get crazy when it comes to black Friday. At the mall near my place there would be knife and gun fights. So I just stay home and drink hot coco. >_> <_<

It's like on that day everyone turns into animals and go on a killing shopping spree. And there minds leave them as they go. There was one time when I went to the mall on black Friday. I was hella crowded but I'm used to that. What got me was when I saw a women with her card out in the open. And I'm like "She better hope that she doesn't drop her card. Or someone doesn't snatch it out of her hands." People just don't on that day.

I went shopping on a Black Friday only once in my life, a few years ago. It was my first Christmas shopping expedition on my own. I did get a few things I wanted. Then swore to never again leave the house even to drive down the road again on a Black Friday. To me, that is a day of mini-apocalypse.

I feel the same way about the "minor" holidays such as Thanksgiving. Being 22 years old and out of the house I looked forward to these and any holidays that meant the whole family could gather together and spend the day with one another. Now due to the downplay of such holidays I can only enjoy their company during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Mother's & Father's Day.
We used to see each other for every birthday, every New Year's, every Holloween, every Valentine's Day, and so many others.
T~T I miss my family and the moments of family closeness, gosh darn it.

We've made a point of keeping up a lot of these traditions. We host a giant Halloween party that a few of my friends have said they look forward to more than Christmas now. And all the guests love the tarot readings now. I still see my grandmothers almost every Holiday, because it's the best excuse to ignore the world and visit them.

So, I ask this question; what happened to Thanksgiving?
It's getting to the point that all holidays get jumped in favor of the Christmas holiday. What has happened to other holidays? Do children these days even remember what each holiday is in celebration of? As a Baptist Wiccan that understands both Christian and Pagan meanings of holidays, I'm starting to feel more and more that some holidays are being phased out in favor of the ones that make the most monetary and material impact.
Is that cynical?
Still, Thanksgiving is not getting the same recognition I recall from when I was younger. I see a lot of Halloween, but I see a lot of Christmas. What about other holidays? Like Mother's Day or Father's Day? Yes, such things are culturally created, but those days serve for true recognition of important figures in most of our lives. I say most because I'm aware some people lack parental figures.
I feel holidays have less meaning than a reason to eat food and get gifts. I do like the food, but I like more sharing it with family and I am of an age (even if it's just 25) where I enjoy more giving than getting.
I ask again, what's happened to Thanksgiving?
|
I totally know what you mean! I love Halloween and Thanksgiving and this year was horrible! I could barely find anything Halloween because most of the stores in my area were just full to the brim with Christmas stuff. I like Christmas as well but it's super annoying that it's jumping in front of other holidays. My friend at work was saying how she was going to be setting up her Christmas tree even before Halloween got here. I was like really? It's a whole month and a half away...

I used to feel the same but then I really thought about it. Growing up my family never decorated. Not once. It just wasn't about any of that to my family. It was about the meal and sharing the meal with family. We never had cornucopias or fall leaves or gourds around. Just the food and the people. After realizing that and giving up on the notion that "decorating," equated to significance my mind just completely changed. I think it'd be more upset if I went to stores and Thanksgiving stuff was thrown in my face. Christmas and Halloween on the other hand, I see differently. That's probably because of all the tradition involved in the smallest of things. Like putting the topper on the tree, placing ornaments, picking out a yearly ornament, things like that where decoration is part of the family type experience, that I do find important.
