hummy ~ I'm sorry you're having such woeful news lately

My dad's side of the family had family dinners, but they were a tradition from when they had church meetings throughout the day. Everyone would congregate afterward, eat, and go back. They helped build a church near his grandfather's home, so it was very convenient. Once they left the state and moved west, they kept the dinner part of the tradition, and when we lived closer to them, we'd head over to their house.

From the anthropology/food culture side of things, there are some cultures where foodways like family dinners are deeply rooted in culture, so I think you're both right about it. Sometimes it's just a family tradition and other times it is an ethnic/religious tradition and may be for no other reason than a means of being with family once a week ;) As an aside, I participated in a huge foodways project about a specific type of biscuits eaten in the region I live in. They were prepared differently on the side of the state I live in from the coastal areas - and we interviewed people completely unrelated to each other. It was interesting, if not a completely weird hyper-focused study on something most people aren't interested in!

yeah my family comes from Sicily and they have done this since their childhood.
mostly it was because food was their only 'gift' they could give their families
today it's not the only gifts they give but it is still the best one in my opinion.
i like your dad's tradition, too, church is a very spiritual and bonding experience
thank you, i have to call my Godmother but i have to compose myself first.
she is going to lose it if i cry and she needs to be as strong as she can be.

Hummy, I'm sorry :( But make sure you don't cry You wouldn't want to make your eyes bad, thinking of a thing that had happened :3

My dad had a friend of mine who loved me since I was very little and always asked my dad to let him adopt me, as he had no kids of his own. Even after he did get his own children he still asked for me too. He was a very kind person to me, buying me anything and everything, treating me like his own child when I was little. I recently heard that he and his son both died in a car crash. It's sad D;

i sort of needed that, i just got a call from my mom and my Godmothers husband was admitted to the hospital yesterday. she waited to tell me because of my eyes. this upsets me because my Godmother's son was killed in a truck accident and they waited a month to tell me. i think i will just never answer the phone again.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! I'll be thinking about you!

hahaha he's painting now as we speak. Or type rather.

i am so sorry about your friend and his son. it's such a shock to hear this happens to loved one, or anyone for that matter. loving people are a blessing in our lives aren't they? my Godmother and i are a lot a like, she is my mother's sister and i sort of feel like i am her daughter. like my cousin was born four days after me and if he was a girl i would swear they switched up the babies. so i really have to get myself under control before i call her.

I can really understand missing people. It can be tough! So tough!

I remember, barely as I was in shock, calling mum after being told of Carlie's passing - and I Was sobbing so hard I couldn't really talk. Yeah, I don't recommend doing that. Wait till you can at least talk and try to calm yourself so that you can be understood.

yay i'm glad llonkahusband is painting. will it be finished soon remember to air out your house last time you got really sick feeling from all of the paint fumes. i'm really worried about her, llonka, she feel apart when my coousin passed away. i have such a jerry springer kiind of family. her oldest son just was released from jail and is on parole so he had to get permission to come home to stay with her while my Zio is in the hospital. they still don't know what is wrong with him but it seems it is his kidneys or liver is shutting down. it's very serious and i am so scared for her. the only blessing about this is i am not focused on myself which i really love but i am so upset for her because i lovr her so much an if anything happens to him she will lose it, literally. she was depressed for years after my cousin.

yeah thats why i am waiting and talking about it here. normally i would not share this information about myself. i do try to not bring people down or upset anyone. my mother said she was crying so hard she couldn't understand anything she was saying so my cousin got on the phone to let her know what is going on

Hummy you remind me of a friend I have who would start crying at the news of anybody's death, whether she knew the person or not. Her nose would be red and swollen by the time we are successful in comforting her >.<

It really is a sucky feeling, and it was all of that, and then some. I do wish you the best with everything, and that it won't upset you both too much.

Sadly, we only have the rice ready for tonight. The rest still needs to be cooked. Chicken, rice, and something - still undecided.
