Cats and dogs are most definitely not at all comparable. People who are used to only one tend to be completely baffled by the other.

I am baffled by dogs. I've owned cats my whole life and I love them!
That's not to say i don't like dogs, I just wouldn't own one. I don't get them.

Birds still make me a little weird, though, because I've never owned a bird. Luckily I got a lot of experience with them in vet school so I'm a lot more comfortable with them now.
