I feel like we'd be best with ideas from a professional. People who know what works right now. But I don't think that exactly comes free.

True. But with kickstarter something very commonly done are stretch goals. I think users on the site can bring up some good input for that part.
though mene would need what like 10k to really make a big enough difference?

All I know is that if this place sticks around, it will be the last of its kind.
Because we have a real community here, and many members are practically nationalists about it.
I have no interest in any other forum community but this one, personally.
When all others have eventually fallen by the wayside, and some new thing is all the rage with internet types, we will still be here, in whatever form, and if anyone wants to see an example of a traditional avatar/dress-up doll/discussion/games/hangout forum, they will be directed here.
And when everyone who never got to be on one back in the day starts feeling that nostalgia people feel for things they never got to do, and the resurgence happens, if this place is still around (and it had better be!), they will all come here and act like they're super-cool for being here. Some of them will even probably argue that this was the original one. XD
People do things like that, you know.

Nope. We will be the living legacy.
Museums are filled with dead things, and this place is alive.
When moribund, bloated cesspools like Gaia have rotted away and become mere fertilizer, we will be the mighty oak which has stood and weathered the storms, providing cool shade for the weary travelers on the internet path.
There will always be artists, creative types of all sorts, and people who like to have fun.
And as long as there are people like us, there will be people who love places like this.
And if I have anything to say about it, this place will always exist, as well.
And not merely exist, but live and thrive.

Gaia is just Menewsha on a larger scale, and with more pockets of communities. The sites themselves are run with quite different philosophies, but the people are essentially similar. There are plenty of avatar-based sites around that are run by groups of friends, and before this, it was just collections of forums without the ability to dress up an avatar.
While I'm not a personal fan of Kickstarter, I can see the value in its popularity at the moment. There are several spinoff sites that run similarly and with the same success. If a guy can raise $12,000 for his potato salad, I'm sure Menewsha could do fairly well to earn pledges of cash for an update.

What needs to be updated here?
I'll go back and read the whole thread.
I know how to do a lot of things with forum software, and anything I don't know how to do I can learn.
Is this a vBulletin forum? I know how to do things with those, and phpBB forums. I've also done things with Simple Machines and myBB.
If it's help with customizing modules or debugging, I can sometimes do that really easily, I would just need to know what was wrong.
I've read the whole thread.
Advertising online is easy but costs money.
Having sponsors here seems like something you don't want to do.
I know how bad advertisers are with the ads they put on people's sites, they're all ugly or have porn in them.
I'll think about this and try to find an answer that will help without being bad.

I want potato salad!
That would fix everything!
Just tell the internet we have potato salad, and wait for the flood of new registrations and active members!

I did what I could to help.
It might be another few months to help to that caliber again, though.

Is it still on daily? Or is it weekly or monthly now? It's been really slow lately. That's probably because of school starting I'm guessing?

Some of us are old enough that users think we belong in museums, lol. I do like the community here and it's something I have missed while being away. That said, we've been wresting with ideas on how to get the users interested in just a little forum site in the middle of the sea of online cyberspace and it's very hard, especially with most people gaming and using online chat programs such as vent, ts, or skype.
We'll figure out something hopefully :)

ah yes... I remember that 40 is too old for mene comment XD
I've done a bit of researching of those top sites but not much comes to mind.
I think mostly mene needs to keep the users joining from getting bored. The rest of us are already addicted

Isn't the potato salad thing about a guy who went on kickstarter who asked for some cash to make potato salad, so he wouldn't waste money, and ended up making a few thousand dollars that he used to throw a potato salad party? Or did he hold a cooking competition? I've seen the story, but can't remember.

Wow! This is the first I have heard of this potato salad thing.... It is actually quite interesting. I do like the fact that he is raising awareness and donated for homelessness. Throwing a concert could generate even more funds to donate.
