Bucky snorted.

"Look at 'im, he's busy," he said, resettling so he was leaning against her. "He ain't got time for me."

Kenzie crooned a bit, reassuringly. He will always have time for you. Even I can see how close you two are. You may, however, have to get used to sharing.

Bucky made a bit of a face and turned away so he couldn't see Steve and Gemma. Nope, he didn't want to deal with that, not right now.

Kenzie shifted, wordlessly offering him a place to sit where he couldn't see the two and where he'd be nice and warm.

Bucky considered it for a second, and then got up and moved into the offered space. It was nice, he had to admit that.

Kenzie rumbled approvingly and settled in there as well. She figured everyone else would sleep wherever they liked. She still had plenty of room if anyone else decided to use her as a bed, after all.

Meanwhile, Gemma was setting up the spot where she was going to sleep. She'd cleared the area already of things like sticks and rocks, and she was working on setting up a simple ward to keep the bugs away. She couldn't help but glance at Steve occasionally as she worked, knowing he was watching her.

Steve had helped clear the space, following her lead on what to do and where to set up. She was in charge, and he had no problem with that at all.

Once Gemma had the sleeping space set up, she grinned and grabbed a couple of empty mason jars.

"Hold these for a second," she said, handing them to him.

Steve blinked but held the mason jars without question, blinking at her. Yeah, he was curious, he'd admit that. But he was willing to wait and see.

Gemma rummaged around in her magic kit for a sharpie and some paper. She drew a few quick runes on some small square bits of paper, and dropped each one into a jar. For a second, nothing happened, and then tiny lights bloomed inside each jar. The lights flicked in and out, like fireflies. She grinned.

"Okay, now you can put them wherever you like," she said.

Steve grinned. "Very nice," he said, setting them down around the sleeping space. "Must come in handy during blackouts."

"I have a different spell for blackouts," Gemma admitted. "Brighter and steadier. These are just... for fun, pretty much."

"I can understand that." Steve smiled. "They are fun. Very appropriate, considering the setting." Bright lights wouldn't fit here, somehow.

"I thought so too," Gemma said. She couldn't help but turn a bit pink at that.

Steve grinned as he settled down. "I don't think I've heard either you or Kenzie say anything about family," he said softly, glancing at her.

Gemma blinked, and then smiled a little.

"Well, you'll have to ask Kenzie yourself," she said. "But I'm nothing special, really. My parents live out in White Plains, and I have a younger brother in Texas."

"Are they magical, too?" Steve asked, and then made a face. "That sounded a lot worse than it did in my head, sorry."

Gemma couldn't help but laugh a little.

"No," she said, "I'm a bit of an anomaly in my family. I actually come by magic via my grandfather on my dad's side. He has a bit of talent."

"Ah." Steve smiled. "But they know and they don't mind?" He raised an eyebrow. He knew how sensitive a topic this could potentially be, but she seemed okay so far.

Gemma's smile fell a bit.

"No," she admitted. "They don't know. I never told them. Grandpap knows, and Daniel knows, but my parents don't."

Steve took one of her hands. "Sorry," he said quietly. "That sucks."

Gemma blushed when he took her hand, but shook it off as best she could.

"I'm used to it," she said. "My parents know I run the shop, but they just think that it's a retail thing. They have no idea I have magic."

"Still." Steve smiled a bit. "At least you still talk to them, that's something, right?"

"Sure," Gemma said, nodding. "It's not like we're estranged or anything. I just... don't mention that one particular detail, that's all."
