"He promised to check in," Steve said. "So you can talk to him, since I'm pretty useless when it comes to magic." He was watching her, though, for any sign of discomfort.

"Okay," Gemma said, although her voice had the faintest waver to it. The situation was getting overwhelming very quickly.

"No need to worry about that yet," Steve said. "Here, c'mon, before it gets cold. Cold toast and cream cheese is not nearly as tasty as it is warm." He nudged the plate towards her.

"Yeah, okay," Gemma said, nodding a bit. She reached over and picked up a piece of toast, just nibbling on it.

Steve didn't push her further, but he didn't go anywhere, either. And he wasn't going to, not until he was sure she was okay.

It took Gemma a while to nibble through the toast, but she managed. Once she did, she settled back in on the bed. She still didn't feel up to socializing at all.

Steve didn't mind. He'd pulled out a tablet and was checking on the news and things around the tower while she ate, content with the quiet for now.

Gemma curled up on the bed, although she curled up facing him. She just watched him for a little while, enjoying the quiet.

Steve didn't mind, though he did glance at her from time to time, just to make sure she was okay.

He ended up spending most of his time with her over the next week, until she felt settled enough to see Dr. Strange.

Gemma settled a bit more as the days went by, and by the time Strange showed up, she felt steady enough to actually see him. She was still careful with everything, though; she'd noticed sparks of magic when she wasn't super careful.

"Good afternoon," Strange greeted her with a little smile. "I am Stephen Strange. It is a pleasure to finally meet you."

"I'm Gemma." She managed a small smile. "I'm kind of hoping you know what happened to me, because I really don't."

"I have an idea. It is a fairly good idea, but I do not know for certain." Strange shrugged. "I believe that a spell backfired on a magic user. From what I understand, he had been stealing the powers of others for a long time, and was attempting to do so to you. However, his spell reversed, draining him and giving you his powers."

Gemma was quiet for a moment.

"I'm not even a hedgewitch," she finally said. "How could that have happened?"

"I'm not sure." Strange shrugged. "Perhaps because of your bond, or perhaps some latent ability. I am not sure how it happened, but it did."

"Is that why I haven't felt right since then?" Gemma asked, somewhere between wary and freaking out.

"Quite possibly. Your body has been adjusting to the magic." Strange looked at her. "I know you did not ask for this, and you have been doing remarkably well so far."

Gemma just shook her head a little, eyes a bit wide.

"I don't know what I'm doing anymore," she said.

"You can learn," Strange assured her. "I can help you. There are many books that would be of use to you as well."

"I was never trained for this much power," Gemma said, flexing her fingers a bit. "I never had more than a spark to work with. How does anyone handle this much?"

"Practice," Strange said knowingly. "Lots of practice, and time. I can assist you with one, at least."

Gemma was quiet for a moment, and then she nodded.

"Alright," she said.

Strange nodded. "Would you like a few more days to adjust?" he offered. "Or we can begin lessons now, if you prefer."

"I--" Gemma stopped and shook her head a bit. "I think I need a little more time. I don't feel like myself yet."

"Okay." Strange pulled a card out of somewhere and offered it to her. "I cannot promise to always pick up, as I am not always home. But I will come as soon as I am able."
