"You'll figure it out," Steve said. "I'll help you figure it out. Just don't push me away, okay? Can't help you from a different state."

"What happens if I hurt you?" Gemma asked, looking at him. "You put yourself in enough danger already doing your job, you shouldn't have to worry about any more from me."

"This isn't danger, this is an acceptable risk," Steve said with a shrug. "Besides, it's you. I don't feel like I'm in danger, and I won't, not with you." He smiled a bit. "Gotta trust me on that."

"I don't even trust myself right now," Gemma murmured. She looked up at him. "I don't know what I did to deserve you being so nice to me."

Steve chuckled quietly, brushing his thumb over her cheek one last time. "Come on. Let's get going before it gets much later."

Gemma hesitated, and then nodded.

"I was heading out to the cabin," she admitted quietly. "It's isolated enough."

"Alright. Lead the way, then." He smiled a bit and tucked her arm into the crook of his elbow.

Gemma hesitated, and then started walking again. She wasn't sure about this at all, but it was obvious she wasn't going to be able to leave him behind, so she had no choice. And, to be honest, she was kind of glad he was insisting on going with her. It made her feel a little steadier, knowing he wasn't afraid of her.

Steve just walked quietly with her, alert but not actively paranoid. He wanted to get to the cabin and get Gemma settled so she could feel better, because he found that he was a little miserable when she was miserable.

When they finally got to the cabin, Gemma went inside without a word. She just kind of wanted to lock herself away for a while until she knew she wasn't a danger to people anymore.

Steve let her settle in, instead taking stock of everything they had and making a list of things they'd need if they were going to be at the cabin for a while. He had at least texted Bucky to let him know what was going on.

Gemma started a fire in the fireplace by hand, and was just sitting in front of it with her knees pulled up to her chest. The fire was soothing, somewhat, and she was slowly relaxing there. She knew she would have to face at least Steve again sooner or later, but for now sitting in front of the fireplace was good.

Steve gave her a little bit of time, but then he went to go settle in the living room near her.

"So, got any plans? Anything you want to do? Or are we just playing it by ear now?"

"No, no plans," Gemma replied softly, shaking her head a bit. "Just-- the quiet is nice, right now." She wrapped her arms around herself, hunkering down a bit.

Steve nodded. He could understand that, after all.

"I've got a grocery list going, if you want anything on it."

"Nothing in particular," Gemma murmured. "Get what you want." She paused for a moment. "I'll let you know if I want anything," she added belatedly.

"Good. Make sure that you do." Steve settled into a chair for now, pulling out a notebook to doodle in for a while, since he hadn't had time to grab any supplies.

Gemma noticed that, and curled in on herself further. It was her fault he didn't have anything with him; she hadn't been able to talk him out of coming with her, and he hadn't grabbed anything.

Steve kept part of his attention on her, though he just kind of let her do what she wanted for now. He had already texted Bucky to ask him to bring some things to the town for him to pick up, so he just had to wait a bit.

Gemma sat there for a while, and then slowly got up from where she was in front of the fire. She hesitated, and then went and sat next to Steve.

"Thanks," she murmured. "For... it would have been harder, alone."

Steve smiled at her. "No problem," he murmured. "I'm just glad you stopped arguing." He debated with himself for a moment, and then leaned over and kissed her forehead briefly.

Gemma blushed at that, but stayed there next to him. Slowly, she leaned against him until her head was on his shoulder.

Steve just settled in there, content. Things were okay for now, and that was really all he could hope for.

Bucky had gotten Steve's text asking for supplies, but it ended up being Sam who brought the things out. It took three route recalculations from his GPS before he finally made it out to the cabin. He knocked on the door and waited to see who would open it.

Steve got up after gently shifting Gemma enough that he could, and went to open the door.

"Hey Sam," he said with a bit of a grin. "Thanks for this, I owe you one."
