I think that just leaves it to you to come up with your interpretation.

It does, but that does mean there's a significant risk of introducing anatomical impossibilities.

You act like that hasn't happened before! Plus, how could you get the anatomy wrong on a mythical creature? :P

By screwing up the anatomy to a point where the creature can't be capable of the actions it's supposed to be capable of. Like, in case of a phoenix/firebird, flying.

AKA, "wings attached at what translates to the bird's version of their hips", "wings attached to the bird's head", "tail originating from halway the bird's belly", "feet/claws originating from their neck" and similar such monstrosities.

... in other words bird go buh bye..

if not careful when drawing, yup, because even mythological birds go buh-bye with wings growing out of its head. :P
