I finally dids it! I managed to stop and eat at Split Pea Andersen's in Santa Nella, California. Apparently, Anderson's was quite the dining destination along I-5 for hungry travelers as the menu header boasts two million bowls of split pea soup served annually. By the looks of things I'd say business has slowed substantially since the restaurant's heydays.

Split Pea Andersen's biggest visual attraction is an oversized windmill with lights on its ever turning blades. The parking lot is sizable, too, with large lots front and back with the front able to accommodate RV's, while the rear lot also offers ample parking with about seven Tesla charging stations.

The restaurant itself is a two-story building with an additional dining room upstairs. But I didn't venture upstairs. The main floor features a large seating area with kitchen, bar, and a gift shop. Split Pea Andersen's is a European-themed restaurant and its gift shop offers certain Dutch stuff like miniature windmills in the smaller portion of the gift shop. The larger section is where the candies, honey, syrups, and jellies are along with other trinket stuff. I couldn't resist buying the blueberry flavored honey. I'll try most anything if it claims to be blueberry flavored. I'm so bad, I've got a monthly subscription of blueberry gum shipped to my door. But hey, I can quit anytime I want.

The front counter is a long glass case that has delicious looking fancy pastries therein. I didn't buy any fancy pastries because I already had in hand crunchy peanuts from the gift shop. Anyhoodle, I did all this looking around after dinner.

When I came in, I noticed right away the waitstaff were outfitted in semi traditional western European clothing. Everyone was friendly and there were no issues. I ordered the Danish style sausage or Medisterpolse. I think that's what it was. It was ok. The two sausages came with bread a skinned potato along with thinly sliced beets. I think they were thinly slices of beets, but I'm not sure. Before that, I tried the legendary split pea soup. It was ok. I dumped a bunch of crushed crackers into the soup as usual and added the house seasoning salt. The sausage had a very chew-friendly texture to it which I liked. It was flavorful also. Next time I go, I will try the meatballs. Overall, my experience was good, and I am likely to return.

I have never liked split pea soup. I think it's the consistency that keeps me from liking it.
I think Mr. Wrong should be a truck driving restaurant critic...and get paid for his reviews.
If Guy Fieri can do it, you could too!

Today, I had the opportunity to visit Ameci's pizza in Oxnard, California. I didn't intend to at first, but that's what ended up happening. I'm in Oxnard to load up some strawberry purée, and haul it to Salem, Oregon. After receiving my light weight ticket from the local scale, it was time for dinner once again. I whipped out my phone to scope out options for local cuisine.
I decided on going to Chili's. It wasn't far, and parked behing Walmart.

When I got there, it was crowded and loud. I strongly dislike crowded and loud eateries unless I am with a group, and then I will just go along to get along. There were about eight people waiting to be seated while several four-person booth tables were open in the rear of the restaurant. I immediately did the restaurant math in my head. Crowded restaurant plus waiting patrons plus open booths not being occupied right away equals poor service. And so I walked out. Just up and gone, I tell you.

Nearby was the local Panda Express, so I walked over there. Panda Express was also busy with a line to the door. And the line wasn't moving at all. There was a Rubio's adjacent to Panda Express like five feet away so peered into Rubio's to see what I could see. Rubio's wasn't at all busy, but I just wasn't in the mood for franchise chain Mexican food. Mexican food is definitely best coming from independently owned restaurants run by folks who are nearly fluent in English. At least that's been my experience.

Moving on again, I look around to see what else was nearby. I was in luck. I spied a Wingstop. Filling up on chicken wings has never been a bad idea in the past, so off I went. Approaching closer, I also see a Baskin Robbins AND a Dairy Queen. Dessert was going to be a no-brainer. But then I walk closer and see five of my favorite letters in the English alphabet spelling out one of my favorite foods...pizza. I forgot all about Wingstop and sauntered in Ameci's pizza to hopefully imbue the menu.
And imbued I quickly was. The owner and his chief lieutenant looked liked Italians from New Jersey. This was a good sign.

The parmagiana chicken and spaghetti caught my attention right away, so I ordered that. What's more is that this dish was only priced at 9.99. A little low I thought. The staff were quite friendly. Even one of the other customers greeted me. And then it happened. I was paying for my meal when I noticed there was a pizza warmer carousel hidden on a counter against the wall to the right of the cash register. This underrated piece of pizza pie showcase engineering had in it two delicious-looking pizzas that were sold by the slice.

I asked myself, could it be?

Yes! Yes, it was. This is the pizza I have been looking for, and I had found it. Pizza that tasted like pizza from New York, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania. I had just struck pizza gold. I only ordered a single slice of pizza since I already had the parmigiana chicken and spaghetti coming out. To be honest, the marinara could have used some improvement, but it wasn't bad at all. Next time I come to Oxnard, I'm definitely filling up on the pizza.

Thank you, Dazz, for your kind compliments.

I returned to Pea Soup Andersen's the other day and tried the Danish style meatballs. And tasty those meatballs were. My expectations were pleasantly exceeded.

While I was waiting for my food, I took another gander at the restaurant. I was going to visit the upstairs dining room, but it was blocked off. It seems this upstairs dining area was in use during Pea Soup Andersen's heyday. More staff was present during my most recent visit. The hostess who seated me was very short. Probably four foot nine. I don't see many females who are that short. I felt like a giant walking near her.

Anyway, I purchased yet another blueberry item from the gift shop. This time it was blueberry syrup. Should I have the presence of mind, I should bring it with me to Denny's or an IHOP, and pour it over a waffle. I'm not wild about pancakes.

I once visited an IHOP in Michigan that was attached to a truck stop and the waitress there told me she thought that the IHOP syrups tasted like cough syrup. And I think she is right.

Let me know what you think in the comments section below, and don't forget to smash that like button.

Oh, sorry. This isn't YouTube.

I finally had a chance to dine at Harris Ranch located at the junction of I-5 and CA 198 last night. If you don't know already, Harris Ranch owns all those stinky cows right off Interstate 5 between Los Banos and Coalinga. Man, I wish they would move those cattle concentration areas away from the freeway.

Anyhoodle, Harris Ranch is a three part establishment with a steakhouse, restaurant, and inn sharing the same building. As you might imagine, the steakhouse and restaurant are effectively just two dining areas separated by walls and a doorway. No biggy. Before I forget, I must mention there is also a bbq eating area somewhere at Harris Ranch, but I didn't seek it out or find out where it was as I was focusing on trying a steak. And a steak I did have. One of the best I've ever eaten. Tasty. Juicy. Cooked to perfection. And no need for ketchup or A1 steak sauce.

The steak came ala carte, but with a cooked whole garlic clove. I found that to be odd, but ok. I ordered garlic mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese as sides. The mashed potatoes were decent, but not outstanding. And, as for the mac and cheese, I can make much better mac and cheese myself. They tried making theirs fancy with gouda cheese and baking it with panko crumbs, but the flavor, in my opinion, fell short and the cheese was not coagulated enough for my liking. I came for the steak, but ended up critiquing the macaroni and cheese.

So yeah, $75 for the steak, two sides, a Pepsi, and three types of complimentary bread. Next time I am going to try the restaurant. Maybe they have ribs there.

It's definitely not an every day event when I can dine at an upscale steakhouse.

I just discovered that sweetened plain yogurt with fresh strawberries is quite delicious. Maybe I'll give up chocolate milk.
